Looking at our agreement, it states the minimum period of 3 years, continuing until either the expiry of a period of 24 months following the minimum hire term or the date on which the agreement is terminated in accordance with the terms in the Contract Hire terms and conditions (booklet)
When I read through the small print clause 15.3 states “At any time after the end of the minimum hire term, we may terminate the agreement by giving you not less than 14 days written notice”….
So although technically they can allow the extra 24 months, its at their discretion. You would hope though that a reasonable request should be considered.
I’d certainly want them to consider our request as technically our son has only 2 years left on his PIP (1 and a bit and then an assessment) therefore its easy money for them to continue the lease. (although leaving finally gives me a chance to get an x3 privately!)
Hmm, our X1 3yr lease is up later this year. Our son (who is the recipient ) will be due his PIP review in 2 years and I suspect he wont be offered the enhanced rate. At this point there’s little point taking out a new 3 year lease if then we are to hand back after 2 years.
I would think it would be in Motability’s interest to extend the lease, they at least benefit for the 2 years instead of us going private.
Will be an interesting conversation with them!
Cannot fault our X1. Good ride, great interior, excellent engine with plenty of power. I’ve had Ford’s before and been happy with, but the X1 has been a nice experience so far. Our previous smax was brilliant for the cavernous space (needed with 4 kids) but now we only need to cart 3 around occasionally. I did worry about the lack of space, but the X1 has surprised me. We also were lucky that the dealership looked after us and wasn’t quick to try and fob us off.
Certainly once this lease is up, I’ll be more than happy to go back to BMW privately. For us the scheme has run its course. I’m grateful with the last 2 cars on the scheme, but I’d rather have the ability to be able to choose want I want and need against the now limited choices available.
Rachel, originally part of me wished I had picked up the Xdrive version rather than Sdrive. The reality is since we have had over the last couple of weeks, I’ve not been bothered at all. Driving the car is a pleasure, interior quality is brilliant irrespective of which leather option you have and the engines are top notch.
As far as the leather seats are concerned, to me they seem more of a charcoal grey look. At night the led lights make the interior pop nicely. In all honestly after a day of so you may find the interior quickly blending in. We often spend more time looking out the window and checking the excellent instrument panels to the point we spend less time focusing on the trim.
Its an excellent car and given its days may be numbered on the scheme, I’d still go for it. The tiguan we tested prior was nowhere near in terms of drive/quality/comfort.

Our dealership said new orders private wise for X1’s were stretching back into march next year (and that was said in sept) We did well to order mid June for end of October.
I’d hope the new gen X1 eventually makes it on, the choices are certainly dwindling. In 3 years time we will probably exit the scheme (the kid with the PIP will be due to be reassessed and they way its going I’ll suspect he will be downgraded) At least by then we can go back to BMW privately.
2 and a bit weeks in now with ours. Very impressed with the car. Interior is definitely a big improvement over our previous car (smax), ride and performance is very impressive and running costs are better than I expected.
What surprises me is how quiet the engine is. It has plenty of pulling power and has no problems overtaking on the motorway (sport seats work well 🙂 )
We went with Mineral Grey and the standard black interior and really like it. The led lighting at night really adds to the look.
We were fortunate that we test drove beginning of June, order place mid June and the car arrived last Friday. I don’t know if we were particularly lucky with the dealership, or whether the fact that both my parents were good repeat customers of the dealership helped. We did have decent communication throughout the period with the dealership stating that even they were having problems back with BMW over exact delivery dates (they originally slated early Sept)
It hasn’t helped with unprecedented demand. The COVID lockdowns have caused demand to skyrocket and along with the decisions to cut back ordering on components have forced the whole industry into a corner, with little sign of the current shortages easing. The up side with Motability ready to extend the lease on our Smax (5yrs old dec) did at least offer some peace of mind.
As a side note, it really is a great car. For us, we couldn’t see anything near to it and we aren’t yet ready for the jump to electric – in 5 yrs definitely! (forced or not) It would be nice to see either the x1 hybrid or 3 series hybrids….but never in a million years. Either will become my options for the private lease we go to after the scheme,
Pickup day tomorrow. X1 arrived at dealership just before 6 and the technicians are reading for tomorrow.
I’ll be sorry to see the Smax go, its a really good car, cavernous really…..thou I expect I will have forgotten about it after I’ve driven off the forecourt!
Seriously if we had to go for a another mpv, it would be an smax, but its a dying sector unfortunately.
Ordered a BMW X1 early June with expected delivery (dealership words…) of early Sept. Now booked in this Saturday to collect!
October seemed more realistic, but it shows the luck of the draw as our dealership is quoting deliveries now well into the 1st qrt next year.
I think we’ve been very lucky, although our car was supposed to be here last week…it’s not, the dealership confirmed its built and on its’s way with hopefully a 2nd week October as pick up. If that comes off we will have done well (ordered mid June). It might have helped that its the same dealership that my parents use and they’ve recently purchases 2 new cars off them.
The dealer did mention than their new orders are facing massive delays and a number of options simply can’t be spec’d. One buyer was told that his 90k motor wouldn’t have the wireless charging modules and when it is eventually available, price hikes means it will be £3.5k more.. Harman Kardon systems are non-existent. X1 deliveries now stretching to Mar onwards. Even the dealership struggles with some of the communications they are getting back from BMW as to delays. I feel for anyone caught waiting as there seems no sign of improvement
I foolishly decided not to put in our normal weekly amount last weekend (due to potentially picking up our new X1….which didn’t happen…) and I didn’t pay as much attention during the week to events (given I take the train into work daily). Come Friday when I figured it was getting to 60 miles left in the tank, all forecourts in the area were dry from diesel. I managed to find one station selling petrol.
Got up early on Saturday to walk to some of the fuel stations and none had been replenished. One station had no idea when they might get deliveries, whilst the other expected some 24hours previous. It was only on Sunday that I managed to find a station 10 miles down the road and only allowing no more than £20 for each driver. That didn’t stop the person in front of me sticking £60 in….. Oddly my pump stopped running just before £20 so I reckon some folk were not releasing the handle thus taking more than the £20. It simply shows the nature of people as to why we are in this mess…
Still in slightly better news our X1 has been built and its on its way…now if they can find a spare HGV driver for when the boat docks…. 🙂
Sdrive Xline 2.0i ordered middle of June. Had a bmw message from dealership advising of delivery date of 20-26 sept…..will be interesting if this makes it across the line!
Stop Start technology….cant stand it. Curbing emissions is a good thing, but the technology in practice it’s really annoying! Whether it’s the implementation by Ford or just my lack of patience, its a bug bear that I can only deactivate on each journey (if I remember before it cuts out!)
We also have the Smax 180 diesel. Car has been faultless and its been a good car to drive despite it’s size/heft. Cavernous space inside and the 3 older kids (21/15/14) sit comfortably. (slight worry that the new X1 replacement will be a be tighter on space for them – the girls are small thou and we don’t really drive to far with all 3 in!)
Part of me doesn’t want to give the car back in once sense, it was tempting to buy outright, but then its approaching 5yrs at which point things can start to break down quickly.
I did notice on a loaner galaxy (150 diesel) that the gearbox engine was considerably laggyier than ours. Ford look like they have moved over to PSA engines/auto’s, so it was a relief to get ours back.
Our previous gen smax (private) was a better handling car than the current gen, but its a shame there won’t be a 3rd gen model given that MPV’s are a dying trend.
Nice house and car Glos Guy !
We stuck with the standard black leather, but the lighter oyster colour does really showcase the interior. Can’t wait for ours.
Which reminds me, I was going to get a boot liner to protect the boot space when loading shopping and kids rubbish!
Looks very good. That’s the same combo we have gone for…..now fingers crossed for an early sept delivery…though I’d be more than happy to take today!
Originally I though both the 2.0 Sline anXline had the same 8 speed auto, now that’s not the case, i do now wonder if I should have gone for the x….never mind I’m sure it will be fine with my somewhat heavy foot and spirited driving! I could cancel and re-order but the AP is higher this qrt and it would just push the order date out.
Still with the way oil prices are rising currently, perhaps the small mpg improvement will be welcome! (I know the reality is that there will be hardly any real word difference)
We drove a 67 plate msport for our test (no xlines available) and I found the suspension to be pretty good. I had a chance to chuck it around a few corners (countryside) and very much enjoyed. It certainly seemed to handle poor surfaces competently.
Just hoping ours is still on for a early sept delivery…
The X1 sdrive 2.0 we ordered back in June has increased by £200. Thankfully its locked in for us at the lower price.
Interesting to see the ID4 on….the 125Kw model an eye watering £5899!
Ours is estimated for the 1st week of Sept (ordered earlier this month) Whilst I’m a little dubious, there is of course the small chance it will be correct…well that’s what I’m hoping for! We only ordered tech pack 1 (along with the sports seats/sunglass) and initially there were dealership doubts on the wireless charging module. However the dealership believes it will be included.
I can live with that….certainly better than our Smax seats!

We had a test drive in an Msport X1 (no xline available to test) and liked the sports seats (the test had the alcantara option) . My wife commented that they supported her back better. I found they held me in firmly as I threw the car around corners ;-)….all in the name of testing!
Both my wife and I are not that tall/big so the seats are a good fit. If they are anything like my dad’s 330e seats then we can’t wait for the car.
We’ve also ordered an X1….when the dealer quoted August/Sept, I’m now assuming he meant 2022 🙂
Our current car is up to the end of a 5yr lease earl Dec….so that could be interesting.
At this rate I’m tempted to go back to being private and picking up a year old X1.
If the BMW 3 series touring was still on then that would have been a different matter.
If the BMW 3 series touring was still on then that would have been a different matter.
Yep was gutted that the 3 series rolled off, both 318i and 320i were my first choice. Initially I dismissed the X1, but after seeing a number of positive reviews, we had to test and I’m glad we did!
We’ve also gone for mineral grey and now we are going to add tinted glass and tech pack 1 to the sports seats as options. I’m keen to keep for 5 years where possible before we look down the EV route so might as well add some features that we will use.
We’ve also bitten the X1 lure. It came down to back to back drives of the Tiguan and the X1. Initially my wife was taken with the Tiguan. It ticked all the boxes to replace our 4yr leased Smax (which is a great car for driving and carrying anything including the kitchen sink). Enough space for our 21yr son (who has the grant) and 2 early teen daughters, something smaller for my wife to drive and a good boot to throw the weekly shop into.
We had a brief drive of the 1.5ltr Life model which was pleasant enough. I did worry that the engine might not have enough grunt once fully loaded. Steering felt a touch light and the appalling roads we tested on, we did feel there was less dampening. Engine felt ok, thou nothing special. We’d made the decision to move away from diesel given we don’t do the millage to justify, and the concerns over DPF clogging/future Government policy means its either petrol or electric (Our Smax which has a TDI180 lump has been a good performer though)
The Elegance model ticked all the boxes for extra kit so we left the showroom convinced it was our next car….
Popped over to Chandlers BMW and experienced a brilliant demonstration of customer service…offered coffee/drinks before going on to talk about our needs. Although they didn’t have any new 2020 face lifted models to test, we were offered a go in a 67 plate 2ltr diesel. Told to go and have a good run, we came back after an hour with me ready to buy the test car!
Although it does feel a little smaller inside, the trim seemed like the next step up. the sport seats worked well for us and helped to support my wife’s back better. The handling and engine were massive leaps ahead of the Tiguan. The car handled bumps/imperfections far more confidently. Boot space is better as there is no load lip and has the cubby space as well. The final difficult choice was then deciding on colour.
I’m looking forward despite the wait, the next batch or build slots starts from June so we have been given collection dates of September. The Smax lease is up in December so hopefully the X1 will have arrived by them!
As a side note, this forum has been great helping us to narrow our potential test list. Whilst there are areas that the Tiguan excels over the X1 (standard spec for one), for sheer driving enjoyment and comfort, the X1 for us edges it.
We’ve opted for the xline S model as I’m not bothered over all wheel drive. Options so far are the sports seats, but currently contemplating the Adaptive lights…..
