You may have a point with the towing comment. When I chose the D4 in the Volvo over the D5, I did my usual googling and other research and the general consensus was that if you DIDN’T tow, you’d probably never notice the difference between the 190bhp D4 and the 220bhp D5. Even though it was only a £50 upgrade, I decided to go with the 4 as it would never tow anything.

Can’t agree with you there Georgie – I’m currently driving an XC60 with 190bhp and it is way more than is NEEDED to move the car – the 0-60 is a little under 8 seconds and the 150bhp Tiguan I’m currently waiting on has a 0-60 of 9 seconds which is still more than quick enough for joining motorway traffic or getting off of the line. My last car was a Peugeot 407 with a 9.8 second 0-60 and that was plenty quick enough to be more than safe.
The slowest Grandland I could find numbers for quickly does 0-60 in just over 11 seconds so I’m fairly confident that your experience the other day was down to the driver, not the car.I do think some of the lesser SUV’s with sub 120bhp could well be a potential issue but they aren’t very common, fortunately, but 180 as a minimum is a little bit of a stretch IMO.

Can’t imagine these having a decent residual value which will make them either a no-go full stop, or high AP which will leave them way behind the competition on the scheme. Might be a bit of a bargain for the cash-buyer but…

December 7, 2019 at 1:23 pm in reply to: UK’s most dangerous drivers: car dealers, priests and tree surgeons in the frame #99073Statistics taken without context can be misleading – I wonder how the numbers would add up if they accounted for the amount of time driving for one thing – most of the higher ratings are on people who would traditionally spend a lot more time behind the wheel. Additionally, I don’t think you can take the solicitors or professional footballers (who can easily afford good solicitors) at face value as they’re undeniably in a better position than most to fight a case.
While I don’t doubt, for a second, that males (especially young ones) are worse than females but I do wonder if it’s actually 6x or if that figure is enhanced by the average males’ inability to flirt their way out of a ticket lol – that isn’t a general sexist thing, that’s 100% based on my personal experience as I’ve been a passenger 3 times in my life when the woman driving did exactly that (one time was my girlfriend at the time lol – I didn’t mind – was in Australia at the time, and the fines there get scary, saved us a good chunk of change).

Looks like they nailed the delivery time too – had a peek on your earlier post and saw you ordered 3 months ago to almost to the day with an ETA at the time of early December. Ordered my R-Line late October and was given a delivery estimate of Late Jan early Feb – if your timeline is anything to go by, should be pretty close…

I used to work in a bodyshop and probably a quarter of the work through the place were brand-new cars damaged in transit. Depends on the amount of damage but I’m with Jack, it’s unlikely to be a complete new door – a door skin or a repair is more likely unless it was severely damaged in which case I’d be paying close attenti0n to the hinges and locking pins etc, basically anywhere the door physically attaches to the car when closed.

November 10, 2019 at 8:26 pm in reply to: Motability Car Sales Person How Much Do They Get Paid Told Me £45 per lease #95992In response to the original question, I was told (by one of the Motability specialists who said he has recently moved from doing Motability at Hyundai) that at my local skoda dealership, the SALESMAN gets £100 per lease.
I’ve also had figures of £250, £400 and £500 from different dealers as the amount the dealership gets out of a deal.

Can’t say for sure what the situation is now, but several years ago before I myself became disabled, I worked as a carer for a lad who had a motability Fiat Doblo. Some kids threw some stones at it and put several dents in the bonnet – when he reported it to motability, they basically said he could have it fixed if he wanted to, but as it’d been reported it wouldn’t affect his GCB – I can’t say if it did or didn’t as we fell out well before the car went back but I do remember him getting the full GCB on the Ford Galaxy he had before the Doblo and that surprised the hell out of me as the driver before me had NOT looked after it in the slightest. I was genuinely worried he was going to get a couple of grand of bill when it went back, not a cheque in the post…

Saw one of these when I was looking recently, SW GT Line in Twilight and it’s a definite eye catcher – I fell in love immediately with the looks BUT I just thought the AP was excessive when you look at some of the alternatives available.
In my opinion, the best looking estate on the scheme right now without a shadow of a doubt and if it’d been a £7-800 cheaper, and had a couple more toys it would have been ordered on the spot…"Man is born in freedom, but he soon becomes a slave, in cages of convention, from the cradle, to the grave."
Of course, it came across as ugly, I all but stated that my feelings were somewhat unreasonable, and while I am well aware of the terms of my lease, my point was (supposed to be) that rules are rules, true, but blindly following a rule for no other reason than “Because it’s the rule” is completely counter-intuitive.
I run my own business and we have “rules” but I regularly bend or break them when there is no, or next to no loss to me or my customer AND there’s a benefit to either or both of us. The truth of the matter is, there really wasn’t a downside for Motability from allowing me to get the car early (but still well within the final 3 months when they will allow you to order) but there would have been a substantial benefit on both sides. I’d have had the car I wanted, and they’d have had a confirmed continuing customer for another three years. Win-win, both sides benefit which, personally, I think is EXACTLY the time when you should bend a rule.
Rules should, in my opinion, always be a guideline, and if there’s a GOOD reason not to stick to the letter of them, then that’s the time to consider if it’s better for everyone if there’s a little flexibility, so I repeat (ironically the one thing no-one mentioned in the comments.) that I believe rules should be taken with a little common sense to get the best overall outcome for everyone.
This was never about me bitching about not getting what I wanted, it was about the missed opportunity for both sides of the situation to benefit, ultimately resulting in BOTH sides being worse off.

A lot depends on your needs and budget – I’ve just ordered a Tiguan R-Line from Lookers in Newcastle, and that has heated cloth seats (so best of both worlds in my opinion) and a pretty high driving position, along with a boatload of other toys, but it’s the wrong side of 2 grand advance payment. If you give us more info on what you’re looking for and what you do or don’t want to spend, you’ll get a load more specific advice – the guys in here are pretty sharp and a lot of us have already done a lot of the homework looking at different cars and trim levels etc…

Meh, I’m 1 week into my 10-12 week wait so isn’t gonna matter anyway heh – Maybe in 3 years although a part of me has already kinda decided this’ll be my last Mota car unless they bring some Pick-ups onto the scheme – I can see me needing a scooter by the time this lease ends and you can’t beat a pick up for sheer space and practicality. I plan to spend the next 3 years saving like mad to buy something in 2023, and if they DO bring something super-suitable to the scheme, I’ll have my AP all set and sorted – win-win for me

Oooh, I have a vinyl cutter, a heat press, black shirts, and both white and red vinyl in stock – I can make myself one of those for effectively nothing… And I still don’t really want one lol 😛

My wife and son had lots of say in the Volvo so was my turn this time. Her only option was to say yes or no lol – MY choices this time around

One of the reasons we ended up with the White (other than the fact that I actually WANTED the white) was that the car we’re getting is already on order for stock which may explain why its due when it is as opposed to the full 4-5 months most are being quoted. They aren’t ordering a car FOR me, they’re allocating a car already in progress TO me. It just so happened that one of the cars they have already ordered for stock purposes happened to be a bog-standard 2WD R-Line auto, at least that’s the impression I got from the dealer. I basically ended up with whatever colour would be landing at about the right time for my Volvo lease end

I think it varies by dealer/brand sometimes – Skoda and Seat both told me there was no charge for any colour (although Seat doesn’t charge ANYONE for colour so that doesn’t mean much). When I got my Volvo 3 years ago that dealer also told me there was no charge for the colour (and he actually said that Motability insist on Metallics being free as they help future value) but when I enquired about the Tiguan Allspace in Haberno Orange, I was told it was a £1000 option.
I THINK (don’t quote me on this) that you CAN get most metallic or solid colours at no charge but the dealers do still charge extra for the Special Edition or high Pearls. Then again it might be 100% down to how recently the other half took care of business when you’re sitting across from the dealer…

Last I heard it was down to a fear of abuse – too tempting for heavy use etc. It’s a shame because I would have one in a heartbeat. Well in 3 years as I just ordered my next car this afternoon lol

There’s always a drive to go wireless (phones, home networks, headphones and more) and I think this is one of those things that doesn’t really need to be. If you’re going to be using the phone pretty much constantly for nav/audio or whatever, having the phone physically connected means it won’t run out of battery PLUS the whole point of having them paired up properly is that you don’t need to use the phone/screen so is it really such a big deal to have it out of the way where it can be permanently connected?
"Man is born in freedom, but he soon becomes a slave, in cages of convention, from the cradle, to the grave."
Does this apply if you’re in the last 3 months when you can normally order anyway? I’ve been told I can get the Tiguan R-Line pretty much immediately from one dealer but the 3 years on the Volvo isn’t up until very early in January, although I’ve had the go-ahead letter from Motability to order my next car

October 11, 2019 at 8:55 am in reply to: Torn between two… well options (and you're probably old if you get that ) #91119Just to clarify, the video I saw on Youtube (so I freely admit, not the most reliable or reputable of sources) mentioned than the R-Line sunroof only booms IF you open it fully. It naturally stops opening just a couple of inches short of fully open. At that point it’s fine, it’s only if you override the “normal” stop point and make it open those extra couple of inches that the noise becomes an issue.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lInKMH1zZBQ – skip to about 16 mins for the details, and DEFINITELY skip the first minute or two of stills and annoying music 😛
My question above is related to the rear windows, not the sunroof as my young son likes his window open but on the Volvo XC60 we have right now, that causes a buffeting/booming unless you also open one of the front windows.
