I received a very unexpected but very welcome cheque in the post today!

Last year in August the passenger door of the Kuga had a short but intimate fling with a stainless steel bollard in a hotel car park. I did submit a claim online to RSA and uploaded photos. However, they rang me almost immediately to say that whilst I could have it repaired for cosmetic appearance if I wanted to, I didn’t need to and in their opinion it would be considered fair wear and tear. At the time I really didn’t want the buggerance factor so as happy to leave it whilst all the time assuming despite their opinion I couldn’t see it getting the GCB.

Well the car got returned on Thursday last week, with aforementioned dent plus some scratches on the rear  corner (like someone has scraped a shopping trolley round it or something) and a few stone chips. Got home today to find a cheque in the post for full amount!

      Well chuffed!!

Pic of dent to give peeps an idea of what might be considered fwat.

We should have a GCB thread where we post damage if any and a picture plus the amount of GCB.

Because it’s a question that gets asked a lot here.

Goes to show it’s best to let Motability and rsa know as I’m sure if you hadn’t you may not of got the full amount, and it’s good to see common sense being used as why should you be charged the excess or lose out on a repair that will cost £60-£80  plus Motability liability doesn’t raise the following year. Good to see.

Can’t say for sure what the situation is now, but several years ago before I myself became disabled, I worked as a carer for a lad who had a motability Fiat Doblo. Some kids threw some stones at it and put several dents in the bonnet – when he reported it to motability, they basically said he could have it fixed if he wanted to, but as it’d been reported it wouldn’t affect his GCB – I can’t say if it did or didn’t as we fell out well before the car went back but I do remember him getting the full GCB on the Ford Galaxy he had before the Doblo and that surprised the hell out of me as the driver before me had NOT looked after it in the slightest. I was genuinely worried he was going to get a couple of grand of bill when it went back, not a cheque in the post…

Have to say I feel a bit of a Narna now as I had a dent in the door of my car i returned it was the size of a thumbnail and I paid a PDR guy to push it out. He did a marvelous job for £45 you couldnt tell where it was? But I do question now did I need to have it done at all?

Do you still get good condition bonus if you’ve made a claim.

I made a claim when a dog ran out in front of car & caused quite a bit of damage.

Motability had the car fixed & paid for a rental car whilst that was happening.

I got the good condition bonus in full come the end of that contract when I handed the car back.

                            Hi newbie to this forum,

I have a Skoda Yeti on the scheme. When my car went into the garage for its 2 years 20,000 miles check, I mentioned that the black rubbing strip on the driver’s door had come loose and could they try and stick it back on. They told me that they couldn’t do this and also told me that Motability had refused to replace the strip, meaning I will have to pay to have a new one fitted. But from what I have been reading in this thread, I don’t know whether to have it replaced before my car goes back in May 2020 or just to leave it. I looked around on the Internet and came across the strips and they are like £40-50 to buy on eBay. I don’t know what to do for the best as I don’t want to lose my GCB as I rely on it for my next car.

                            Thanks

                                @poetry6666 welcome to the Forum

that sounds like it will be fine and classed as fair wear and tear, rather than replace it a bit of 2 part glue would prolong its life or a can of spray glue carpet fitters use. This is a cheap alternative and a handy glue to have around the house, can be used on nearly everything. Link

The last car I handed back the guy walk around the car and glanced though the window, he could see it was clean inside and out, he never looked any further. There were a few marks on the passenger door where people had hit the car with their car door, he wasn’t bothered at all.

                                    Hi Mitch & JS

Thank you for your reply. I took a look at the Screw Fix link and that looks like great glue. I will purchase some of that this week and let you know how I get on. One question, does the spray part of the product has a wide area of spray as I don’t want to get any of it on the paintwork of the car, I guess I would need to mask it off to be sure. The rubber strip is held onto a piece of metal that is attached to the door and there is no signs of rust at all, maybe it’s made of aluminum?

After using the glue to stick the strip back on. After a few days or so, do you think I will be risking it by using a car wash or is it better to go to a hand wash (I am unable to do it myself because of my disabilities)

                                    Thanks,

@poetry6666 the spray side of it is just an activator it won’t stain stick leave residual or anything, no need to mask or anything just apply the liquid part of it to just one side (either the body or plastic, rubber what ever is easiest) no need to over do it and no need to rush like with superglue ( until you use the spray) once the liquid is applied  then spray the activator on the other surface and apply pressure, hold for 5 to 10 seconds an that’s it, no cleaning up needed (unless you over do the liquid, then just wipe of or wait for it to crystallise and brake it off, if you needed to jet wash after then I’m sure it would be fine but I’m sure officially it may say allow an hour to cure properly, but the stuff is amazing try it first on some test things, apply liquid one side spray the other apply pressure after 5 seconds your struggle to pull it back apart. It used to be the go to thing for kitchen fitters for mitres of cornice etc but then every trade realised they can use it and need it, there are now various brands out there some are still exspensive  but that one will suffice and great for most things, and great product to have around the house
