      Hi there,

I started my lease in 2023, it’s due to expire later this year. I am under 30 so waiting for the box to arrive (has anyone else not received one yet?).

I’m in the situation where I often take meetings from my car (not when driving),  it’s classed as sensitive information hence can’t go into a local cafe or something to join them. My concerns is with the data it captures and a potential breach hence why I wish to terminate when the box comes through.

I was wondering if anyone has anyone had a successful grounds for cancellation w/o early termination fee.

another concern for me is my local shopping is done in a retail park, I often move the car 4x to get to different sections on it so I’m assuming although they’d be very short trips this would be classed as 4x trips?

as you are already on the scheme the black won’t be sent unless you take another lease, so you should be fine until your lease expires

Unfortunately if any driver is under 30 this answer is incorrect (I wish it was not!)

From Motability FAQs on drive smart page –

‘If you or any of your drivers are under 30, Drive Smart will soon be included with all new applications. Your device will be posted to you after you collect your new vehicle.

We will also start contacting existing customers with an under-30 driver on their lease to arrange adding Drive Smart to their current vehicle.’

Yes this was my understanding. Its just annoying for us who’s leases are almost at the end.

Have you explained to them your circumstances and requested the more traditional style black box rather then the linked to phone app model.  Last line in the FAQ

I’ve considered this, which is my plan when the device comes, but equally I don’t want to phone DLM incase then they try and push me sooner rather than I would be by ‘saying nothing’.

What a shame I have a Xiaomi phone. I’m not letting that app on my phone aside from the black box rubbish who knows what data they’re stealing off your phone given the permissions they’re taking. Probably snooping around other apps, seeing what’s being used and when to try and catch people using their phones.

MB haven’t published their data policy on the play store either. I expect that’s something else they’ll get spanked for.

Even if I would install their app. I’d just turn it off when getting in the car, if MB demand it’s on what does that tell you what it’s really about.

No your phone must be turned on when driving.

I wonder if there’s a way to soft mount the things so they get “cushioned” like in a gimble, just joking

Firstly I should say that I am in the same situation and have raised a complaint / concern

However much we shout and make this sort of statement it is definitely our choice whether or not to use the app or if they agree, the standalone device. But one thing is certain if we don’t we will be taken off the insurance and if caught driving or worse have an accident with no insurance its going to be costly!

One thing I have not seen anywhere is what happens if the Motability customer gets taken off the insurance, do they automatically get the option to return the car or is there some push back from Motability on doing so? Anyone know (preferably facts and quotes from Motability rather than social media!!!). Thanks all horrible times

If you get taken off insurance, I’d imagine your contract with Mb would be terminated, otherwise you would be left in possession of a vehicle not insured through no direct fault of your own, if it got stolen.

Sorry I missed the part where there is a second driver on the policy, will they or are they trying to say the car stays but only second driver can drive? Just trying to protect someone from ending up not being able to return the car if they were removed from the insurance, highly unlikely but would like an actual example if there is one out there (rather than social media click bait lol!)

                            You have two options:

                            1. Get them to fit a tracker/ black box in your car, or

                            2. Buy a cheap smart phone and use that when driving.  The trouble is with Bluetooth on etc is there any risk of it hearing you making a call?

I have a similar issue with my son.  He visits clients and has to keep the location/ his movements confidential.  This is hard with device smart which insists you keep the Bluetooth/ location switched on 24/7.

I’m late 20’s and a black box insurance is actually double the price for me.

I think the fact they’d chosen 30 and not 25 (or 21) is a choice.

Thanks, I’m sure I’ve seen they can’t be fitted to all cars so I’m wondering why they haven’t released a list of non compatible cars?
