I had a Mercedes B Class with the drive selector on the steering column and had no problems with having a hand control fitted. Mind you I had to be a bit creative using the wipers as that was on the same side as the hand control!
In all the years that I have been with Motability I have only ever had bad service once and that was with a Volvo dealer in the north west. I heard on the grapevine that they treated all customers the same not just Motability so I moved on to another brand.
July 17, 2025 at 7:51 am in reply to: Who remembers (or had) a Motability special from the old UK manufacturers? #309738That got me thinking. I have been on the scheme since it started in 79/80 (I think) and my first car was indeed the Chrysler Avenger. How things have changed since then.
My previous car , Mercedes B Class, came with mats but my current motor, Honda ENY1, didn’t. To be honest it isn’t a deal breaker for me.
I’ve had two speeding tickets in the last 10 years. One for doing 36mph in a 30mph zone and one for doing 49mph in a 50mph zone on a motorway. I opted to pay the fines and go on a speed awareness course to avoid the points. I informed Motability but no action was needed. Incidentally I learnt more on the courses than I expected so not a complete waste of time apart from the cost!
Excellent. We will be in touch.
Glad you’re enjoying the new motor. I’m enjoying my Honda ENY1 and as I too am retired and most of my journeys being local, range is not an issue. Apart from my twice monthly trips to Worcester to collect my grandson from college. I do get a little range anxiety wondering if a charger is going to be vacant but I haven’t been caught out yet. Perhaps I shouldn’t have said that! Scaysie and I are getting together in June so might pay you a visit if you are in. Take care.
I’ve had the email from Motability to leave a review which I have done.
hi DumfriesDik. Hope life is treating you well.
I was with British Gas prior to getting an EV. I was aware the meter wasn’t communicating with them so tried to get it changed. BG was less than helpful and said they were aware of the problem but had no idea when the meter could be swapped. They did invite me to lodge a formal complaint even though they admitted it would make no difference. Long story short, I switched to Octopus and the meter was changed within 2 weeks. Happy days.
Enjoy😎
Mine was installed about a month after ordering the car then sat idle for 4 months until delivery. A standard installation so no delays.
I’m 6 months into my first electric car, Honda ENY1 and apart from the first 6 weeks during which the main battery had to be replaced I don’t regret it and wouldn’t go back to an ICE. I’m spending less than £20 a month whereas before I would spend that each week. I travel to Worcester from Blackpool twice a month so need to top up somewhere on route but I’ve not found this difficult. I’m a Plan B sort of bloke so planning ahead is not a problem but you must do it to avoid getting caught out. It really is as easy as folk say. As long as you have a home charger I’m sure you won’t look back.
This is exactly what happened to me after a charge to 100%. To be fair I’ve not read any reports where the main battery has had to be replaced as the fault clears itself. Unfortunately this was not the case for me. On the plus side the car is running great now and I’m really enjoying driving an EV.
FINAL UPDATE: finally got my car back from the dealer yesterday after 6 weeks in the garage. HondaUK have changed the main battery and all seems to be working as it should. One part of the dealers workshop looked like a crime scene with the old battery now crated up and cordoned off with high vis tape. This will now be whisked off to Swindon to be dismantled and examined to see if the fault can be identified. As a side note I’ve quite enjoyed driving the MG4 that Motability arranged for me although it is a bit low but has been fun. Fingers crossed I will have trouble free motoring from here on in.
Not had any problems so far using the app. Did my first charge during the day yesterday because I needed a quick top up and just set the percentage I needed and by when and disabled the dynamic charging option and away it went. For the record I don’t use any of the settings in the car and just rely on the charger to avoid conflicts.
I should add that despite all this I am enjoying driving an EV and am looking forward to getting back into my chosen vehicle. Having a home charger and with most of my journeys being local it suits me down to the ground. From what I’ve read in user groups my experience is extremely rare so don’t be put off by it. If an EV suits you then go for it.
UPDATE: Honda UK have authorised a fix but it’s not the control module as first thought. They have got to replace the whole battery at a cost of £23k ! The dealer also has had to hire a crane at a cost of £1k to lift the battery out. Honda UK are sending out technicians this week to do the work so hopefully I’ll get it back next week. At least I’ve still got the MG4 to run around in thanks to Motability moving so quickly to get that sorted. So I’ve had my new car for 8 days and the dealer has it for 4 weeks and counting. Not the best start with a new car. Did consider rejecting the car but then that will just prolong my frustration so fingers crossed it will be plain sailing from here on. Time will tell.
My current car is a Mercedes B200 and I’ve had no issues with the dealer from getting the car and the follow up servicing. Interesting how our experiences differ round the country.
I’ve been on the scheme virtually since its inception and only had a bad experience with 2 dealers, Volvo and more recently VW. Due to pick up my Honda ENY1 tomorrow and they have been great throughout the whole process. Seems to be the luck of the draw as to whether you get a good experience or not.
Ordered my new Honda back in January and the charger was installed 4 weeks later. I’m due to pick up the new motor in about 2 weeks.
I’ve just switched electricity from BG to Octopus as BG could not give me any date for replacing my faulty smart meter and therefore I couldn’t change to the EV tariff. Octopus was a breath of fresh air and are changing the meter next Friday! I’ll probably switch the gas to Octopus in October when the contract expires thus avoiding a £75 exit fee.
You are spot on. Charger was fitted back in February so hope it works! Hope you are both keeping well. Must meet up asap.
Seems I may have dodged a bullet as my local VW dealer was very lukewarm in promoting the iD4 and seem very disinterested putting me right off it and VW. So I ended up at Honda who couldn’t have been more helpful. My ENY1 has just arrived at dealer so eagerly awaiting the hand control to be fitted and then collection day. I’m sure the Honda will have its own challenges as most cars do.
I was asked by Honda for £500 up front when ordering back in January with the rest to be paid on delivery. First time had to pay anything but didn’t mind. New car day fast approaching with the car due to at the dealer next week. Can’t wait.
