Hi All
my neighbours currently drive a Diesel car and have seen my EV and want to get a EV for their next mobility car.the problem i can see is that they do not get on with Apps, and setting up the charging each week will be a problem, they want just to plug the charger into the car and walk away, next morning the car needs to charged.
they are on OVO at the moment, just standard not smart, in fact no smart meter yet!
from what i see they will get the same charger as us, ohmePro, i dont think OVO support that anyway.
Anyone any suggestions on how they would be best to proceed . they are not sure what car either yet as they are going to the show at the nec to look at a few different ones.
Cheers guysPaul

Probably they would need to learn to use apps on a smart phone. I cant see them managing without it.
Not the best fit for them.
April 20, 2026 at 9:51 am #353734Lot of bridges to cross for them..how far up the road are they able to order an EV ?
Do they own a “smart phone” now ?
They will effectively have 3 apps installed on their smart phone for future EV car use…a manufacturer App…an Ohme App if thats what gets installed…..and a utility company App.
The manufacturer App should be installed with the full help at the dealership, set the charge limit to 80%.
If an Ohme charger is installed just set the start time 12 midnite end time 05.00am (cheap rate)….with British Gas as my utility…and just charge the car as and when your cars battery drops to 60%.
Get them to watch YT videos.
I’m 72 in a month and i was just like them nervous as hell about all this “tech”.
April 20, 2026 at 10:01 am #353735EDF, EON Octopus Go are non intelligent tariffs, so it a cases of setting a basic on/off timer set once to account for cheap hours and they just plug in when charging is required.

April 20, 2026 at 11:48 am #353744Hi
I have the Ohme charger, skoda Enyaq and OVO energy. I don’t use the Ohme app just use it as a plug. The OVO Charge anytime App and the Skoda App work well together. Had some problems at the start with the Ohme App so deleted it and all fine now. Charge Anytime will charge when power at the cheap rate is available not just overnight. Just requires a bit of App setting up.

April 20, 2026 at 9:22 pm #353781Well the couple have both got Smartphones and the husband a ipad too. not sure that they do much with them.
anyway i have given it some thought and i think they should be ok . i just set our Octopus app up with a charge to 100% setting, (the car is set to 80% so will not charge past that anyway) and ready by 9am. i did nothing else and then tonight just plugged the car in and walked away, the app guessed i had 46% left (i have 29% in reality) and then set a schedule as i didnt correct it. with it thinking i need 100% it should charge to the amount i really want anyway. with it set like this they could just plug in once a week and they will be happy and no fuss to do if the cant manage the app. at the end of the day i live 50ft from them so not a problem to help them out.April 20, 2026 at 9:30 pm #353782On my Ohme App, and nearly everyone with the App has “Approve plug-in”.
You dont really want any tom dick or harry driving up an plugging in.
Hope they have something similar, or easy access to the isolator switch for the charger.

Yes, I have the same function.
I was in hospital last week after a mild heart attack and I had a stent fitted. My wife was driving the car to come to visit me and it needed to be charged so I talked her through how to plug it in and the App came through on my phone to Approve and so I did and the car charged just fine.
April 21, 2026 at 8:03 am #353796I’d love to know what phone people use on here Samsung android ? Or Apple ?

Could I ask why only charge the car to 80% why not charge it to 100%

The unwritten rule is 20:80 – don’t let the battery go below 20% or above 80% for regular charging.
Obviously that changes if you need 100% for a long journey.
It is better for the battery health.
April 21, 2026 at 9:50 am #353821Yup 20:80 rule…Unless they have a car with an LFP battery, they prefer to be charged to 100% at least once a week to keep them in balance (they go out of balance faster than the standard cobalt/nickel batteries).
It can be a bit of a minefield, but it is manageable once they get their head round it. My father in law enjoys his Atto 3 at 78yrs old, no home charger, uses a few apps, has a Tesla account to save on charging and seems to navigate it all ok on his Samsung Galaxy 8.
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.

You can charge it to whatever you like. I reckon 90% is good.
It is fast charging that kills batteries or did with early batteries.
Slow charging at 7.4 Kw is good.
April 21, 2026 at 1:26 pm #353831The usable capacity of an NMC battery is lower than the gross capacity because of safety buffers set by the Battery Management System and the manufacture to prevent overcharging and damaging the battery and to stop them becoming discharged.
A 2024 fleet study (10,000 EVs) found average annual degradation of only 1.8% — down from 2.3% in 2019 — showing modern BMS engineering is winning the battle.
It is far more damaging if a lithium battery becomes discharged or drops belows the voltage threshold, than it is to charge to charge to its full “useable” capacity because it will not become overcharged, as it is protectected by the BMS. Has is continual fast charging far more damaging than slow AC charging.
All lithium batteries need a full cycle charge-discharge to keep their cells ballanced. LifePo4 (LFP) benefit from float charging (AC) to provide optimal cell life.
Charged to 100% in extreme heat is the real killer, as the batteries calendar aging doubles when the SOC exceeds 90% and temperature hits 45°C or more. In the UK?!
April 21, 2026 at 4:31 pm #353846If you have bought the car with your own hard earned money charge it to conserve the battery, if it is a lease car no matter where it is leased from charge it to 100% it is no skin of your nose if it needs anything done to it under warranty.
