Skoda dealer wrote down need 4 tyres cords showing. So off I go special trip (another 60 mile trip for tyres) Kwik fit say no, 3 at 4mm other at 3mm they don’t need doing.

So now what? I have paperwork saying effectively dangerous tyres yet Kwik fit say no, albeit they probably just measured them vs Skoda maybe looking closer?

I tried calling Motability but after an hour listening to how my answer is in my online account over 100 times I lost the will to live…..

So do who’s right who do I trust?

        I have the same problem.

At its 2 year service, Hyundai marked 2 of the tyres as “Amber” for wear.

Took it to Kwikfit an they said Motability would not approve replacement as they had 4mm on them and not replaced until they get to 2mm.

Probably best to dig out Andrew Millar email address and pass the comments from the Skoda garage and Kwikfit, and confirm for the record if his driving  license is going to take the hit of 12 points for faulty tyres.

I’ve had this with every dealer I’ve had a car with. They always tell you tyres need replacing when they don’t.

If chords where showing it’s a safety issue. I’ve had that once and MB made the dealer change the tyre and wouldn’t let me drive it.

Kwik fit are not going to pass up the business. If chords are showing they would have said.

Difference between cords showing and 3/4mm is considerable, did they actually say ‘Cords Showing’?

My experience of KwikFit has been good, whereas dealerships to seem to focus on upselling! Do you possibly know someone who could take a look at the tyres for you? A specialist tyre supplier nearby you could visit maybe?

I had a friend who worked in the tyre business. He saw thousands of dodgy tyres. Cuts, bulges, bad repairs.

Even down to the cords. One, maybe. Possibly two on the same vehicle. What he never saw in thirty-odd years was all the tyres on the same vehicle down to the cords.

You would have to lose all the tread on part of the wear surface of the tyres or damage the sidewall to expose the cords.

It would have to be an extremely bizarre issue with the steering or suspension to cause such severe wear of tread that it exposes cords in one place yet leaves 3/4mm in others.

Photos emailed to Motability could help to straighten things out.

Same sort of position, 85x Enyaq, 12,900 miles. 3 tyres down to 3mn, other at 4.something.  KwakFit not interested until under 2mm, hopefully they’ll last me until I start looking for replacement car in October 😂

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

If the cords are showing surely they should have not released the vehicle back to you, they have a legal duty of care.

It’s not KwikFit being funny about the 2mm, it’s Motability’s policy. Before Motability, I always changed tyres at 3mm. Let’s face it, tyres are your only contact with the road, so you need good grip for road holding, but also so that braking is effective.

2mm makes me a bit nervous, as, for me, its a bit close to the legal minimum, which is 1.6mm.

2mm that 0.4mm between illegal, I have read on line that half the thickness of a credit card30% less efficient in the rain. It is recommended tyre are changed at 3mm.

                          It’s rather simple.

Have Skoda show you where the cord is showing. If they can point it out, go to Kwik Fit and demand changing, since the car is now not roadworthy any more.

However, if you have 4mm of tread left, it’s kind of impossible to have cord showing unless you dragged the car behind another one for a few dozen miles with the handbrake on, tyres tend to wear reasonably evenly. So having cord showing on one side and 4mm tread on the other is impossible.

I’d probably check myself proper. Bit of a faff, but better be safe than sorry. If there’s evidence of cord showing, MB can’t refuse.

However.. Kwik Fit wants to sell tyres. If they can’t see evidence and/or jump on the opportunity to switch tyres, you’re probably okay.

Though i do agree with Oscarmax, changing at 2mm is generally too late for comfort, too close to legal limit. Measuring tyres every 500 miles to see if you’re finally due to change to a safer pneu is obnoxious, mainly due to the knowledge that you would/should’ve changed them 500 miles ago.

edit: worth pointing out, when our GTE was due MOT, we got an advisory for tyre tread as well, and Kwik Fit declined to change them because they were still over 2mm.

It’s kind of bonkers if you think about it, you’re getting told that your car is approaching “unsafe” by someone who’s paid to assess how safe your car is, yet your “all inclusive, worry free motoring package” goes “naaaah, it’ll be fine”.

From 1st July 6 tyre only, don’t get a puncture and mind the potholes.
