My first car to look at Wednesday is Toyota CHR design hybrid was £995 hope it’s doesn’t go up in price ?
My current car is the C-HR Dynamic Mike. Had it almost two-and-a-half years now & thoroughly recommend it. Can’t fault it in any way & definitely the most comfortable car I’ve ever driven. It’s a 1.2 turbo which Toyota have discontinued in the UK now alas. I have my eye on the Corolla 2.0 GR Sport later this year. Great reviews & have you seen the seats – let alone the MPG?!?! ? The AP was £875 before lockdown… but now it’s just over £2,000 for some reason !!! That’s a lot of wonga for a car built in Derby.
The Corolla 2.0l was one i looked at but decided it was way to small for us has the battery in the boot so is tiny compared to the 1.8l but is not as powerful and has less hybrid range and i pretty sure it was the case that the 2.ol also can use both engines up to 70mph but the 1.8 only upto 40 mph. The chr has the 2.ol now as well but the ap’s have risen alot since i first was looking back last summer at these all cars have gone up alot since i was looking.
@rox. I won’t be too far from where you grew up then. I’m pretty close to Rhyl.
It not to far from Bangor, especially with the new road although where my dad lives now llandrillo yn rhos real close to you.. not seen him for awhile? it’s complicated. I may go for a trip to N wales as I wanna show my daughters the sights and hit the mountain passes and a trip to down to blaenau ffestiniog. How i miss those places and roads on the doorstep.
June 29, 2020 at 3:52 pm in reply to: HOW MANY OF YOU GOT A FULL TANK OF FUEL COLLECTING CAR #116500Picked up the latest car on the scheme last monday and the honda dealer had filled it up, also got £200 off the Ap so all in all very happy. 1st one i’ve got a full tank free in.
usually it’s about £20 they put in and on one car i’m sure i had to pay for that on top of the ap.
Nice
There was one of these at the garage where I fuelled up this morning, though in red. It looks even better ‘in the flesh’. Absolutely stunning.
Reds the standard colour they come in and as of yet, I ain’t seen any of the newer my20’s on the road. I’ve only seen a few of the older ones about on my travels as well. Pretty rare. Yesterday some guy in a jeep stopped and asked me about it as i pulled up outside the house.. I must admit it looks stunning parked outside the house.. Compared to the golf that i had before..
Spoke to MB few weeks ago about how soon i could be in it if i did order a instock car, as the one i had ordered was having issues with getting it and was told it would be a min of 7 days before it could happen, but it’s all been sorted now. been in it for a week now..
Phaedra is right though could be upto 2 weeks depends if the cars is close by and ready to go and if everything goes smoothly their end and of cousre is a good time for you as well..
Takes a couple of days to process the application and 4 days to sort insurance out, plus the dealer will need to register the new car, most are done electronically these days. so thats pretty quick.
Make sure you get a good test drive as well as often it’s not in the exact car you will be getting, so bare that in mind the seats, trim level or engine etc maybe different.. plus make sure anything that is agreed is in writing like a dealer reducing the AP, or an option you want, some do some don’t all depends on them really.
No decsion has to made on the spot, unless you happy to go ahead don’t feel pressured to commit.. Never let them know it’s the only one you want. even if it is.. also i guess it depends on your actual situation regarding needing a car or certain features or options..
this is my first time getting a car on mobility scheme, can someone please talk me through how it works? I definitely had my mind set on the GLA too
Best to read the info on the Motability site
https://www.motability.co.uk/about/how-the-scheme-works/
https://www.motability.co.uk/your-lease/car/at-the-beginning-of-your-lease/
https://www.motability.co.uk/your-lease/car/
Then if you need any help or got any questions ask, thats probally the best way.
You’d have to read all the rsa and Mb T&C to be sure, from what i can see in them after having a quick look. it don’t mention speakers specfically but it does say this “other audio equipment” so i guess that would cover speakers etc.
It’s not something i had even considered doing so had a look..
“The equipment must be permanently fitted in the vehicle or alternative vechicle and must have been supplied with it as standard by the manufacturer or dealer”
I do think as we don’t own the car any work would have to be done by an authorised specialist as well.. if permission was given by MB. After all any of our personal stuff left in the car is not covered either..
Say you did own the car, the audio stuff would most likely be insured upto a certain amount not the actual equpiment in it and so would be our personal stuff, In most cases anyway.
You’d only have to inform them if it went over that amount..
But as it somone else’s asset at the end of the day the insurance terms are to cover them as well and are not standard ones. Personally i’d say call and ask what the situation is before to cover yourself.
I know it’s only speakers or only an illegal hack to the system that some do but if that’s not authorsied and were they to findout it could cause problems and they would charge you to have it put right by an authorised specialist.
Not what you want to hear i know but thats the reality of leasing a car. I guess..
@Tharg Most decent Modern cars hardly gets out of shape unless you do stuff erratically in them or the weather conditions are so bad they not effective. IMO There’s nothing wrong with and when safe to do so, turning off certain systems and keeping your skills in check of how to handle a car when stuff does happen.. Which most of the time is out of your control as it can be other driver’s actions that can cause one to have to take evasive action, and lots of times i have avoided things other’s just would’nt of (their view not mein).
We always learning everytime we drive.. everyday down the same bit of road is not the same and some people switch off as they think they know the road so well or don’t drive to the current conditions.
some seem to alway drive 10 mph below the speed limit no matter the conditions and then when they enter the 30 mph zone they do 10mph over. Which i find very strange indeed..
I used to find an empty gravel car park or a muddy field when i was younger, Always on private land and never on the actual road and not for a long while though as my back cannot take it anymore.. Growing up in north wales, i had lots of chances to do off road driving. Which is what i luv’d to do the most out of all the driving i have done over the years. Give’s you a great feeling for how they handle and you don’t have to be going crazy speeds to lose it either, your right about that. It’s just physics and i love the science behind it.. understanding how you intiate a car to enter a controlled slide is great info to have in your pocket.. Deffo not on the road though.. although when it snows it is useful around where i live to get about when the ploughs not been out for a bit and snows deeper..
June 28, 2020 at 10:41 pm in reply to: Can you pick a car from stock rather than waiting for it to be built? #116423I’m being selfish @rox I just want back on the scheme, I don’t want to pay for the MOT, oil change, brake fluid change, probably a tyre or two and probably a set of brake pads on my PCP car. As much as I would like to choose colour options etc there are a couple of cars available that I would be happy (relatively) with straight off the forecourt. I’ve checked on auto trader and there are some available, I don’t even mind driving a couple of hundred miles to Durham if I have too, I’ll even pop into Specsavers to check my eyes while I’m there.
Makes total sence if you gotta pay for all that yourself.. keep the £££’s in your own pocket..
it prob will take a min of 7 days from when you order one till you can actually pick it up..
@rox You sound like me, there’s nothing better than pootling through towns and villages at 30, once that national speed limit sign appears I’m in sport mode, then it’s flick over the gearstick to m/s and floor it.
Yep i sure do.. only near me the A roads are all 50 mph now and most have speed cameras tracking you over a distance, so I need to drive to the dales, which just the otherside of the m1 from me.. for a joyful drive.
I drove up to chatsworth house yesterday and then around abit and then back home. Best drive i’ve had for many a year.. effortless
When i had the golf it had the slide the stick to the left option as you say for manual mode. The honda don’t it has the paddles but they work good enough and if you don’t change up or down it will do it automatically so you don’t wreck the engine.. When road conditions allow for it of course, pedal to the metal and often i don’t get out of 3rd gear.
Many years go when i had a 205 gti you could do 80 mph in 3rd easy in it..
I reckon they should increase the speed limits not be decrease them like they seem to be doing.. when it’s safe to do so of course.. speed imo don’t kill idiots speeding at the wrong times do imo.. or where they don’t know the roads.
I used to drive for a living and when they reduced all the major roads around and into london to 50 mph from 70 mph that was 20 miles per hour i could not do anymore over say an 8 hour day that’s 160 miles a day less.. My boss was like how come you cannot do all the drops you could anymore. I was like the speed limits and pretty much every points i have ever had has been when i was working driving a van..
Best to keep the options open my current car went up £600 in the 2 quarters after having the test drive at the end of last summer till the point i could actually order in jan.
£1000 off is a pretty good deal, I only managed to get £200 off the civic sport which was hard work, but still I’m very happy, especally with the colour i picked and sometimes it comes down to a compromise being made on certain things some you can and some you just cannot accept.
Dealers are strange in the way they operate I guess it’s to do with them being part of a group but all are franchise of a certain brand and mostly all of them operate in the same way.
They order cars to meet quotas the manufacter sets out and get discounts for that and they then takeout a loan on those car at 0% with say mercedes for a 30days then after 1 month they must pay interest on that loan to mercedes. so it starts to cost them money sitting there. So then offer deals on them but the ones they pick are to maximise their profit in a sence. Some may have the popular packs on that cost more, which is where they also make their £££.
goodluck tommorow hope it go’s well.
It’s good to hear when dealers are good and likewise with me, The dealer allbeit a honda one that i got my newest car on monday from has been brilliant and considering all the issues with covid and the recent cyber attack an all.. They are the same company i got the golf from the vertu group and they been excellent in every dept cannot fault them..
I don’t want to be a killjoy, but I’m pretty sure the RSA insurance doesn’t include track days or testing the safety aspects of a car. ?? Never heard it called that before. Also, I wouldn’t have thought Motability would allow you to buy track insurance. The one thing I’d never contemplate doing in a lovely new car is put it on a track or test the limits of it’s handling. Or ragging the ar5e off it in boy racer terms! When I get a new car the first thing that comes to mind for me is polishing and protecting the paintwork.
True i highly doubt any lease or hire car would be allowed on a track by the actual owners ( if they knew) and would cause problems.. Some have trackers fitted and are set to notify them if you go near one or go crazy speed in them.. My brother got a phone call, once in a hire car telling him to slow down.. he was doing over a ton he said..
I used to work for an engineering company years ago who made bespoke disks and pads and at the car shows we used to go to, some people would want to buy racing pads for driving on the road, which is illegal and stupid as they will in most cases not get to the right operating temperature, the same with standard brakes on a track, the brakes will get too hot and that will cause issues..
Maybe a track day experience a better option. I have done a few of those, one was at silverstone and on those there was no overtaking on corners or racing as such.. Worth it if you can get it discounted..
I can see you washing and polishing your pride and joy to a mm of the paints life hehe, Me i don’t bother i take it to the car wash and get someone else to do it as i just cannot anymore.. My son used to do it?
As for boy racers, I like to see what the cars limits are within the scope of the law. but with speed limits getting lower and lower it’s getting harder and harder to do that within the law. Except for on christmas day he he. Then i might get out of 3rd gear before i have to lift off..
Alot of A-roads near me are now 50mph not 60mph anymore and now it’s about how quick can i get to that speed and then cruise along.. at 56mph. Which is less than the 56mph on the speedo..
Rox, I have a Civic the prestige model it has the same engine as yours but with a manual box. It is a fantastic driving car quick of the mark and really holds the road on twisty bits. Although the 0-60 is supposed to be 8.2 seconds in reality it is less, probably closer to 7.2. I read somewhere Honda deliberately understated the performance to maintain a bigger differential with the Type R. The car is a great drive on A & B roads and you can really nip along. My previous three cars were all SUVs and having gone back to a conventional car has brought the joy back to driving.
I had the test drive in a prestige, not available in uk anymore though that one or even the sport plus now..
Think the exhaust adds a few more bhp maybe 4 more 182 which for a 1.5l is stunning imo..
I went over to the derbyshire dales yesterday and when you put it into sport mode and then use the paddles it is a different car altogether again OMG. The notes from the exhaust are a nice sound indeed.
The steering is awesome as well. super light, I didn’t floor it to much but was shocked at how good the cvt really is.
I cannot do manual cars anymore but i bet the clutch is super light as well in the manual.
I was also driving suv’s and mpvs till my last car which was a golf and i enjoyed the lower down driving again.. Especally on a windy day or high speed bends. So decided to go with a car again.
The civic is ultra low and that is good for handling and actually the ride ain’t so bad either.. I think in america they’d call it a daily driver as opposeed to the type r which is a crazy car 320 bhp from a 2.ol as standard.. deffo has brought the joy back of driving hopefully that don’t mean points for speeding..
Not had anything so quick since i’ve had kids and before them i had a boredout 205 gti but now they bigger it’s time to enjoy life and have fun as you never know what’s around the corner..
I hope you enjoy your new car. It’s definitely a marmite car, I think it’s one of the ugliest on the road. So many fussy fake vents and plastic inserts.
I think what’s worse is that basic not painted trim around the wheel arches and door skirts so they look more suv like.. Some are getting huge like on the mazda cx30 that looks so cheap imo.. and fake exhausts lets not go there hehehe (leaf collectors) or oversized kidney grills, I think all car companies are at it these days in some way or form.
Personally i like the 1.5 vtec engine, the way it drives and sounds so that really is all that matters and to me it is a lot nicer looking that the old version X, or the gen 8 and gen 9 civics, They was ugly, I’d never be seen in one of those, no way with the dropping front end but this one I like it..
June 28, 2020 at 2:39 pm in reply to: Can you pick a car from stock rather than waiting for it to be built? #116364Yep but you maybe limited to what’s actually available in the pool and on some occasions it’s the only way to get one in the specs you want for the end of your current 3 year lease. Happened to me on on my last 2 cars first one because they was not making any more golf 7’s they were making the 7.5 but that was not due for release until after my exchange date, bit like now with the golf 8 coming soon.. I could’nt get a golf at all this time Or with my current car for the spec and colour i wanted a factory slot was not available in the 3 months. So the dealer sourced one of the 3 that was on the system.. They had the car a few weeks into feb after i ordered it in mid jan for april handover but then covid came about and i picked it up last week..
It will be the 1st of july on weds. So i guess you could see what the prices are then and decide what to do.. but if only 3 cars are allocated this month between all the dealerships in the uk, then i reckon by weds they won’t be any available any more.. or did he mean for june the month we in or the one coming july..or is it a rolling month..
Sounds to me like maybe they could have 3 cars in the group they have preordered, that no one wants because of the colours.. and next month they gotta start paying interest on them to mercedes..
Maybe a chance to ask for a discount if you take a colour you don’t want as it may change your mind saving £££ usually does.. unless it’s nasty like guacamole green.. The sales person called you which says to me they looking to offload something as they do and will get a bonus for doing so on those cars..
It really depends on your overall situation.. do you mind keeping your current car till the car you want arrives or have you other options in mind. I was so having this should i cancel dilema over the last few weeks but it’s all been sorted and glad i heldout as the car i got, is everything i thought it would be and more..
True, I bet it’s just your order’s that’s been lost on the system? either it was never placed in the beginning or it has been fullfilled and given to a known customer of the dealer and you’ve been guzzumped or you got a discount they no longer want to honor after covid. Sounds very shady.. On my 4th car on the scheme this week and never had any problems with ordering a car from the factory.. as Br says it’s not the system that’s lost the order 100 % waffle that.. More likely it’s been reallocated.
I’d say call MB get them to sort it out and start looking for another car maybe from another dealer if your heart is set on the one chosen but then you gotta ask yourself what will after sales be like if sales as this bad..
Thanks Mike that’s hopeful!, my local dealer has 3 Xcellence Lux in stock (all white) so if the Tiguan doesn’t arrive or the price goes up they’ll move up to 1st place on my shortlist (it’s only got 4 cars on it!) ? Loan car goes back next Thurs or Fri so I have to get something ordered next Weds.
I had a converstaion with mb last week and i asked them, if i did cancel my current order and placed a new one on a car that was in stock at the dealers how long would it be before i could be in it driving.. she said 7 days min.
Glad i didn’t have to cancel as the honda civic sport i ordered back in jan is great, on monday they had sorted out the problems stopping the handover. picked it up at 3pm
It don’t help your situtaion but may help you decide sooner is better rather than later and being left with no wheels at all for longer than is necessary. Guess you could just hire a car for a week or so if it comes to it.. short term something is better than nothing imo..
Plus i guess you cannot order on the system till the 1st of july so guess it will be the 8th at the earliest opportunity before you can pickup any MB car ordered..
when it comes to the ateca XCELLENCE LUX the dealers has in stock are they different engines or all the same as that will mean a different AP but the same trim level..
Was one i did look at but decided ap was to high and i need adaptive cruise which only is available on the XCELLENCE / LUX and not available on the fr trim or under..
it’s a very tuff situation you find yourself in. I feel for you.. but also the cars gotta be righ for you.
You’ll have it for 3 years. Sometimes something has to give for me this time was the heated seats and a higher car, having long legs don’t help my back and hips, when getting into higher cars i have to bend them more which pulls on my back more and sets off a muscle spasm.. Hopefully it all worksouts for you..
Thanks to all for running-in advice. BMW say do not exceed 4500 rpm or 100mph until you get to 1000 miles. Doubt that I would do that even if it WAS run-in! Remember “old days” when a new Morrie Minor was kept under 30mph for geological ages and didn’t even have a tacho! Enjoy yourself, Rox
Yeah for sure, Over a ton and it’s a ban so if you do 101mph may as well make it a worthwhile experience he he he (as it maybe one’s last for a while) or one could just plan a trip to germany and hit the autobahn..
Not sure if you can do a track day in a MB car but you can use the autobahn..
I agree Rox, I wouldn’t want to modify it for more power either. 182bhp is more than enough for normal roads
Very true.. I’ve not had any points for along time and most of those have been when i had been working driving vans or trucks guess thats where the adaptive cruise control comes in!! Is way to easy to drive way to fast, which is great when you need it..
June 26, 2020 at 11:43 pm in reply to: Personalised number plates: the top 10 most expensive ever #116209Was meant to get my new car with my Personalised number plateon it, which been on retention for a while, but will have to be after Mb get the v5 now.. means alot to me the plate i don’t want to lose it.. nothing special really but it’s alot easier to remember it..
A 0-60 time of 7.2s seems about right. I wanted to look at one but like you say it’s a marmite car. I like them but the wife hates them.
Maybe get her to go for a test drive my missus is no fan of sporty cars but liked this one, The one real downside is it is very low to get in to it.. but once you in all is good. plus the boot is a pretty decent size as well.. We still are a family of 4 and need enough room as well.
Nice choice and it’s a bit like marmite like you say But i love marmite
Totally, Sometimes hard choices have to be made, this time it was so easy for me it was the only contender..
I did look at others but after driving the honda i knew..
