I was on the scheme from 2009 alongside my late wife till 2020. Then on her passing took the schem in my own name on war pension. I had nothing but praise for the scheme. In my wifes latter years they waived the excess milage costs, as we had a daily five days a week 150 mile round trip to hospital. So on end of lease of our Alhambra it had over 70k miles. They bent over backwards trying to swap the six month old Tarraco we had to my lease but as war pension and DlA where diffferent amounts, it was not possible but they did let me keep Tarraco an extra 3 months so i was only two months or so awaiting my Kuga. Then sadly I inherited some money i was not expecting, with my parents passing. So last September i left scheme and got my long term dream vehicle, whilst i am still allowed to drive being on medical licence with Parkinsons alongside other conditions. I treated myself to New VW California with VW 5 year warranty, Service plan, Roadside assitance 124k 5yr milage warranty. S0 basically extra costs where insurance, tyre repairs and of course cost of vehicle. Seeing the current trend it saddens me as the scheme made such a difference to our lives.

, that is gorgeous, I’d love a California. I’m always watching van lifers on YouTube, nearest I’ll get is a converted T5.

I seriously hope the government is planning for fuel shortages behind the scenes, I’m not one to attack Starmer, but other countries seem to be doing a lot more. Why aren’t we making bus travel free, why not encourage work from home again.

A lot of people on Motability don’t need a new car every 3 years, my last car was almost 20 years old when I scrapped it.

I agree. We are leaving the scheme and only buying new because we can get the VAT off which, along with the VED exemption and the further discount I negotiated, gave me a near 40% discount. As a result, we can buy new for the same price as a used one. However, if we couldn’t get the VAT off I would buy used without hesitation, as the vast majority of private motorists do. The cheapest car that I ever ran was a 7 year old BMW 750i Sport. Although the 4.4 litre V8 made it a bit thirsty on fuel, I kept it for just over a year and actually sold it for a few hundred pounds more than I’d paid for it. Deducting the maintenance & insurance costs, it cost me just over £1k to run the car. A base model city car with zero AP through Motability would have cost four times as much to run over that same time period, and I know which car I would have preferred to drive around in during that year 😂

Mrs Joe uses hand controls, I’m certain we’d get the VAT off, it’s just the thought of spending over £30k on a car, but I know it makes sense as I’m convinced we’d keep it 10 years. We’ll have to see what Ernie brings us between now and September 2027.

@DJWheels, All fair points, I’m not taking a lease out myself, we’re buying a 1 or 2 year old used Enyaq or Model Y when our lease is up next year. My reason for starting the post is to show how Motability needs to do more and offer better deals.

Thats my plan, but I’m terminating my lease early and will use our own car for now. I had high hopes for an ex demo 540i Touring, but mre kezo quickly blunted those plans saying it was too low 🙄

I like the 5 series Touring, I have a thing for big estate cars. A lot of people on Motability don’t need a new car every 3 years, my last car was almost 20 years old when I scrapped it.

Your absolutely right to highlight there are good / better deals out there and Motability seems to have taken a dive (even more so after June 1st 2026) but as someone who helps predominantly disabled people get out of debt / manage their finances / wider situations I just felt it important to state that for all Motability’s issues, it may be a more suitable choice, especially when you might only be saving ‘a few pounds’ by going private. I apologise if my reply came off combative, that certainly wasn’t the intent.

Not combative at all mate, all valid points. 👍

I get the comments regarding a different model variant and different lease specs, but surely this just goes to show Motability need to up their game and cut some of their own costs to give us better deals rather than making the scheme unsuitable for many by reduce mileage and all the other crazy stuff they’re doing. .

P.S. “Add in a service, maybe £200” You’ll be lucky, they’ll still want to give it a cabin filter and a brake fluid change, say £250, but that’s every year!

According to Google AI Service is 16000 miles or every 2 years. VED is free for PIP recipients.

What more evidence do you need that Motability are fleecing us. You can get a Vauxhall Frontera EV on a lease from Vauxhall with £1300 up front. Motability price for the same car is your full £333 a m…

Often theres better deals out and about but Motability does cover insurance plus its currently better in terms of if you need any replacement tyres etc. The big thing though is if your conditions might change you’re better protected with Motability.

Going by Motability’s own figures of average customers doing 7000 miles a year (used to justify the crazy 10k mileage cap) most people won’t need to replace tyres and if they do £200 for a couple of tyres.

You may be better sticking them on eBay, you’ll get a bigger audience and probably more money. You select which postage method you want to offer, Royal Mail, Evri and I think another courier. Buy pays postage and eBay send you a postage label for you to print at home or a 2D barcode to take to the post office or Evri drop off point, they’ll scan the code and print your label for you. All you need to do is find a box and package them up. I ran a business selling on eBay for over 20 years, it’s really easy now.

And it is now one of the most expensive places to sell anything as a business seller. Put the items for sale on Gumtree it’s free for the advert and no fees to pay.

Agree for a business seller ebay has priced itself out, the rot started years ago when sellers were prevented from leaving negative feedback, promoted listings was a killer for me. But it’s totally free for a private individual seller, except for motor vehicles.
