What more evidence do you need that Motability are fleecing us. You can get a Vauxhall Frontera EV on a lease for £115 a month from Vauxhall with £1300 up front. Motability price for the same car is your full £333 a month PIP including future inflationary increases and don’t forget the 20% VAT saving Motability get! Yes you’ll have to insure it, but that shouldn’t be more than £40 a month for most people and there’s no maintenance as it’s under warranty, maybe £200 for a service.

I like the 4 series Touring, I have a thing for big estate cars. A lot of people on Motability don’t need a new car every 3 years, my last car was almost 20 years old when I scrapped it.

I agree! But, your likely to start WW3 saying that😂

My own car is a 2020 220d Gran Coupe, apart from being impracticable for our needs, but its like new and lovely to drive. Last year I got a treasured nearly 20 year old Rover 75 V6 of a mate who’s dad passed, gave it my daughter, who still drives it daily.

I agree. We are leaving the scheme and only buying new because we can get the VAT off which, along with the VED exemption and the further discount I negotiated, gave me a near 40% discount. As a result, we can buy new for the same price as a used one. However, if we couldn’t get the VAT off I would buy used without hesitation, as the vast majority of private motorists do.

The cheapest car that I ever ran was a 7 year old BMW 750i Sport. Although the 4.4 litre V8 made it a bit thirsty on fuel, I kept it for just over a year and actually sold it for a few hundred pounds more than I’d paid for it. Deducting the maintenance & insurance costs, it cost me just over £1k to run the car. A base model city car with zero AP through Motability would have cost four times as much to run over that same time period, and I know which car I would have preferred to drive around in during that year 😂

Mrs Joe uses hand controls, I’m certain we’d get the VAT off, it’s just the thought of spending over £30k on a car, but I know it makes sense as I’m convinced we’d keep it 10 years. We’ll have to see what Ernie brings us between now and September 2027.

@Jojoe The two essential criteria for VAT exemption are that the disabled person (who doesn’t have to be the driver) must be a full time wheelchair user and the adaptation(s) must be classified as substantial and permanent.

Our person hoist is eligible, as the bracket is bolted into the frame of the car and the power for the electric hoist is wired in to the cars electrics. I would assume that hand controls qualify for the same reason, but when my wife used them she wasn’t in the wheelchair full time so we didn’t qualify. However, HMRC were very helpful when I called them to confirm our eligibility for VAT relief. You can call them on their Charities helpline 0300 123 1073 (0900-1800 M-F)

Hi Mike, you could go to a Vauxhall dealer, but you might not get the best leasing deal there.

The best deals seem to be on Leasing.com and Leaseloco.com

Experts suggest you look first at the best deals rather than makes and models of cars, but if course if there’s a particular model you like, you can input it in the search bar

Next choose a term length, 24 months, 36 months etc and your annual mileage, allowing for a bit extra.

Take note if the upfront payment and any additional fees as well as the monthly payment

There are bargains to be had, but as I said in the other thread, they change frequently, and what’s available one week might not be the next.

If you want maintenance included, remember to select this before the search, but in my opinion it costs a lot more. I’d prefer to put a bit by each month for servicing etc

Typically you would order through the website and the lease car would be delivered to you, so if you want to test drive, you’d have to pretend to the dealership that you’d be buying from them 😆
