Cars that are driving on the roads ( night/darkness) with a headlight or a tailight or a brakelight not working in my area Sheffield is almost at epidemic levels, old cars, newish cars, private hire taxis are these drivers not aware or just plain ignorant, whats wrong with checking all your lights are working at least weekly is not too demanding a job and most newish cars have bulb failure dash warnings. Is there a shortage of bulbs or have they become too expensive to buy or too hard to replace, I flash every driver i see,i wonder what they think.

The answer to that question is quite an easy one, to replace a headlamp bulb on many modern cars can be a front bumper off and headlamp removed, this is well beyond the scope of the average driver ….and if a main dealer job it will cost a few hours labour…people won’t spend the money !

…just another thought, WAV’s can be restricted in multi story car parks or ones with height barriers, 1.8m and 2.1m are common , make sure if going for a transit type vehicle you have sufficient clearance ??

          Thanks ????

I don’t know your son’s condition but our son is both physically and mentally disabled to we have to second guess all his motoring needs.

If getting a medium or large WAV, opening side windows and rear air/con is a priority as in basic terms, the vans are like mobile greenhouses in the summer months ?

…and yes grants will only support new vehicles. We have used most of the conversion companies over the years.

Allied Mobility , Verso, O&H, Gowrings, all good , and Brook Miller is an excellent dealer ??

Hi all, There’s a lot of talk about cars on here and not a lot about WAVs. I am looking for my first WAV for my son as he is getting very heavy to hold and soon will be impossible to lift into the regular car. We have been to both Big Events and seen a lot of WAVs. The only off putting thing is the APs. They are extremely high. We then realised we could get a nearly new WAV for cheaper which made us interested. After trying so many cars we have decided that the Ford Transit Independence is the most suitable. However, we are going to apply for a grant as the dealer said the APs are between £1000 – £2500 on the nearly new ones. Does anybody have any ideas on grants and/or the Ford Transit. Any advice will help Thanks all

We’ve had WAV’s in our household for the last 20 years, we have two son’s in wheelchairs and each had a vehicle due to their different conditions and equipment required at the time, one had a Peugeot partner size vehicle and the other a Renault master.

The two major key factors concerning vehicle size Is wheelchair length, and height clearance of head getting into vehicle. Then other factors like do you have a carer that needs to travel in the back of the vehicle , oxygen cylinders etc.
there are more of the smaller size WAV’S on the market and the Peugeot partner seems to be in abundance, have you looked at that vehicle as AP prices seem fair ?

We’ve had a grant for one of the vehicles, factors like our son had no savings in a major factor, I suggest you put a grant in for a new vehicle and seen what the outcome is .
Yes they make you jump through loads of hoops and will dictate the model of vehicle you get ….bottom line is they will always go for the cheapest model that suits your sons needs as they hold the purse strings .

If looking at nearly new have a look on Allied Mobility’s website , they are one of the biggest converters in the UK ..followed my maybe GM Coachworks .

As you say not much chat on here about WAV’s ☹️

guess you’re going to loose the nail at some point . I done a something similar ..took a good 10 months to get the nail back to the end again .
Kept the nail as a souvenir but I won’t post it up !

I went to one in Bluewater, Kent 6-7 years ago, was very useful to try my son in various wheelchair accessible vans. Helped us make the choice for the then next vehicle .

I’ve got nothing but praise for the WAV conversation companies, our latest one from Brook Miller is the best we’ve ever dealt  with . Guess doing a full personal customisation is not the same as selection a car off the shelf so as to speak.

I’ve told my disabled neighbour who is due for a replacement vehicle in March,(standard 3 year lease)  keep what you’ve got as this forum paints a very sad picture of dealerships at the moment.

Long lead times and poor choice ..hopefully he can get a year’s extension ????

Modern cars do tend to suffer condensation problems, our Peugeot Rafter gets it on the bottom of the headlamps. My daughters Toyota Aygo gets condensation build up on the inner front screen, this is made worse in the winter when it freezes !

Touch screen displays can also suffer condensation on the inside of display.

Also we must have all noticed, new cars don’t have roof gutters, so open doors on a wet days… it dumps water on the seats or carpets ☹️

The Eddie Kidd segment was a bit emotional, I remember as a youngster watching Eddie’s stunts on TV and seeing that final stunt on the news….all very sad.

Recently got a car as an ex motability car from an auction. Audi a1. I’ve been told the tracking on the car is slighly off which is causing the car to push to the left slightly. Does anyone know if this is an easy garage fix? ive contacted a local garage but my message was ignored and google just talks about car trackers as in location trackers.

Good chance it’s been curbed in its lifetime …..can you see any sign of damage to the wheel rim or the spare wheel if it has one (quite often a damaged road wheel is stuck in the boot )?

As a retired mechanic I would first check tyre pressure all round , if problem is the same swap front wheels side to side (this covers if the rim or tyre is defective).

with the car jacked up and the front wheels off the ground, spin the wheel see if the brakes are sticking, if yes could be a brake Caliper problem.

what’s out of your hands is wheel alignment and it’s a black hole who to trust to do a good job, I would say an establishment independent garage is your best bet .

Last thought…it could of had crash damage but let’s hope not ??

Ignore the other drivers demands, let RSA deal with it all, just give them the registration number of the vehicle involved..and address if you have it . Do not have any more dealing with the other driver .

Speed limiters have been about for a while …not a cruise control, so you need your foot on the accelerator but when you preset the speed it stays at the desired limit…yet can be overridden if you slam your foot to the floor.

Ahh I recall the challenge of IVA checks years ago, during a little stint of car importing. The local vehicle licensing office had to inspect and sign off. They were pretty good but many of them were closed and I doubt there’s the staff these days.

On reflection they can’t do a IVA check before the conversion work can they ??

I’m going to suggest it’s not true. Dealers have allocated numbers and register online. It took my dealer 5 minutes a few weeks ago. I doubt if the time it takes DVLA to issue the paperwork matters.

I think the conversation companies are not main dealers so may have to pass the documentation over to in this case to Renault .

Other extra hoops is the vehicle needs a Individual Vehicle Approval test, this is we’re they check the wheelchair tracking for strength, so more red tape paperwork to be signed off by DVLA ? .

When you’re on the Toyota site and it asks for version code, you can click on what is version code and up comes a little photo of what to look for on the V5 document ??

Sadly we gave up with bird feeders in the garden, they are a magnet at dusk for mice and rats !
Rats are lazy creatures and will set up a nest close to a food source…….that being under my shed !

So took the feeders away and with a day or two the rats had moved on .

have a large bag of seed, will maybe put the feeders back up  in the winter when the birds really need the help.
