I glimpsed a bit of ‘Auto Mundial’ today on ITV4 and they had the VW ID4 on there saying its more than likely to be a replacement for the Tiguan. Wasn’t a full review in anyway but it did strike me as a possible EV for carrying a fully assembled pavement scooter and hoist and they said size wise its halfway between the current Tiguan and the All-Space ICE versions and that sounds right up my street. No prices mentioned that I noticed but can imagine the starting price for base model will be way beyond the Motability price ceiling even if I could afford the AP but time will tell.
Its the car i was really waiting for as we love our current Tiguan. But looking at the pricing for the ID3 i cannot ever see the ID4 coming onto the scheme as your looking at an EV in the price region of the Tesla model 3 and thats around 45k to 50k not to mention the BHP will be well over 200.

ThargAll models come with drum brakes at the back. NOT a cost-saving measure or the like. The drums, fairly big things, are a brand new design, commissioned, allegedly, specially for the ID3. They are sealed for life (some 150,000km). VW is said to have chosen them to avoid disc “drag” on the driven rear wheels and because the regenerative braking system does a fair bit of slowing down. So, sorry, VW, I was missing something.
Anybody know whether any other EVs are using drums? Will go and have a look…

Mike Charles<p style=”text-align: center;”>I’ve ordered a seat ateca dsg, only other option was to wait for Q1 prices and hope the e niro is added or maybe the id3 comes on at a reasonable price. I don’t get why the APs are so high on electric cars as the residual values are far greater than fuel. </p>

ThargJust had a more detailed look at ID3 on VW site. The “base” model seems to have plenty of bits that I want as standard, parking bleepers, warm seats etc. The sub-ton top speed is definitely called for on base model – drum brakes on the rear (!). Hmmm!

ThargThanks, Brydo. Great post with all the data we need for an idea of what the ID3 is going to be like. Decent spec; 0-60 is more than adequate as is the top speed. Looks good with just an edge of individuality. If VW want a real name for it not just letters and numbers, then “Bauhaus” would seem appropriate. Do agree about the wheels though; awful looking things. Only acceptable if they do something aerodynamic to assist brakes/charging/reverse-thrust landings etc.

Imo it’s a big mistake the way they gone with the touch screen and i can deffo understand why alot of lets say people who don’t talk to there phones to open an app say, would find it a headache, Using the exact wording for me, with the brain damage i have, is not so easy but pressing a button is.. So i decided it’s not for me either.. hardly used it on my honda and was one reason i got the civic as well as they put some buttons back. Especially for the climate control. After having a c4 grand picasso before the golf that was a joke in the morning waiting for the screen to boot to change the heat settings only for it to error and one needed the engine restarted to reset it..
Same with the id3 and car wow did a test and the sat nav, using voice was a joke. maybe it was the accent he has but all the same.. he said use your phone and goggle maps it works good.
Shame really I dunno if the ch-r will be any different to the yaris as it’s probally the 1.8l you looking at..
if it’s also a bust what ya plans that’s the question..
October 16, 2020 at 3:06 pm #127119I agree gothitjulie, the glass and camera could be added for a reasonable price but to be honest I don’t think I’d bother. I really like the fact that the entry level ID3 comes with adaptive cruise and heated seats as standard.
Atiq Urrehman, I’m assuming you’re shocked that the top speed seems low? If you think about it, 99mph is more than enough for what the id3 will be used for. Need to remember that it’s a car built for economy and not speed.
October 15, 2020 at 11:03 pm #127042Window tints & a reversing camera can be added aftermarket for very little.
I think you’re right about the Life spec having pretty much everything needed.
With EVs it’s often best to have the smallest wheels on offer as the range & ride are better.
Range from the 58kW battery is said to be pretty good as the ID3 is efficient.
However, watch out for the Skoda, it’s worth looking at.

ThargWeather “changeable”. Started tipping down about 6pm yesterday. Stopped early a.m. today. Now bright sun, warm (22C-ish).Getting bored having to adjust number of layers of clothing!
Didn’t know the Dreamland wheel was gone. V scary one – all wood and rickety. Wonder if the roller coaster survives. Also all-wood construction. Brilliant ride (for a kid in 50s) would probably scare the proverbial out of me now! Developed fear of heights; will happily hang upside down in open-top Tiger Moth (given the chance) but ladders are difficult. Silly.
Q4. Ho… as you say… hum. Prices were bound to rise. Car makers are facing big drop in demand and, I guess, are trying to charge more per unit to maintain revenue on reduced sales. Totally against accepted rules of economics. But in this pandemic economy, who knows what will work?
I take it the BMW was the 3 series. Definitely the best car on scheme. Will handle beautifully but looks awful, lumpy lack of any style, looks more like it should be a 5 series. But who cares if you’re inside and drifting gently round a corner? The Focus seems quite good. Big enough engine to make it acceptable but over a second slower to 60 than both Minis. If I wanted a front-drive Golf replacement, I’d seriously consider the Clubman but I’d test one of the Countryman 4x4s first. Reckon 4×4 drive stuck on to the BMW 2.0L could be really most enjoyable. Bit pricey though.
Overall, with 18 months to go, I have to agree with your conclusions. Everything is so unpredictable, the only thing to do is wait and see (and secretly hope that the ID3 and/or Giulia come on at a decent AP).

TheSUVGuyI’m a big VW fan but I feel like they could’ve done so much better with the ID3/4 both were big let downs for me, to answer your question tho Musk himself has test driven both the 3/4 IDs so he clearly sees them as big competition to fly out all the way to Germany to see what he’s agaisnt

ThargTesla on Motability three years from now? Well, maybe, be nice but in three years time, I reckon the ID3 might be a) available and b) working right. Who’d win in the fight… Tesla or VW?

£5550 more to get the reversing camera? Ouch. Peugeot do the same thing, forcing you to up spec for the reversing camera, c’mon manufacturers, a reversing camera is a safety item, make them standard.
Let’s hope it really does arrive early 2021 rather than blight the EV market with the broken promises of the VW iD3.
August 27, 2020 at 6:31 pm #122635One thing strikes me as odd, in the quest for greater EV range, is the size of cars being offered. Nearly all seem to be big(ish) SUVs and the like. Even the ID3 comes in on the chunky side. Why not make ’em normal or small saloon size? Less weight should mean more range? That said, the Mini EV and Honda E-thing ARE small in size but with small range too. Is it lack of space for batteries? Am I missing something?
August 23, 2020 at 4:24 pm #122405Agree EVs leave much to be desired at present. Will be very interested to watch development of ID3 and to discover just when, and how heavily, government will start taxing us for motive-power electricity. Just changed Motability car and suspect that my present Mini will be last ICE vehicle on scheme. Next probably an EV; just hope the makers do something about dash/controls: look inside ID3, Honda E etc and all you see is touch screens to drag your attention off the road. Too many bleepy, flashy things is well dangerous. Give me a simple set of knobs and switches, thank you.
August 10, 2020 at 9:13 am #121552In reply to: Does anyone have an electric car.
EllieWe are seriously considering an electric car. We currently have a 10-year-old VW Touran which we originally got on the scheme and then purchased.
We have taken the MG ZS and Peugeot e-2008 for test drives. The boot in the Peugeot is a bit small for my wheelchair, but I think is a much nicer car than the MG. My husband prefers the MG.
I need something a bit higher than a saloon to get in and out of, otherwise we would probably look at the Hyundai Ioniq.
Wondering if the VW id3 will come on to the scheme in the next six months or so.
Unfortunately the Kia e Niro full electric version isn’t on the scheme and I doubt that it will be given its popularity and long wait times. That is the sort of size I really would like. It’s just a waiting game to see what else comes on the scheme. Going to have to choose in the next six months or so due to the dates on my Pip award.

I love his reviews, and the ID3 is definitely something we’ll be looking at in 3-5 years if it’s on the scheme.

ThargYes, Thomas really gets into it doesn’t he. Seriously good review, covering much more than others I’ve read/watched. ID3 really looking like extremely interesting vehicle: low CofG, rear-wheel-drive, and more torque than you can shake a stick at. Does that remind anyone of a Porsche? Only criticisms: 1) hate the wheels. Ugly in extreme. 2) Smaller, lower, two-door version would be really good. Oh, that’s a Porsche again, isn’t it.

July 17, 2020 at 5:03 pm #119392In reply to: @ Elon Musk on Twitter
DafyddWith regards cost Motability had cash reserves of £2,6 billion in 2018, significantly more than any other car leasing company. Given those sort of reserves why are we paying any ap’s?
Elon Musk is at the very least a canny businessman and the potential of having 650,000 potential customers along with the cudos of helping enhance the fight against climate change might prove attractive.
As far as I am concerned any opportunity to wind the “fail” up is just icing on the cake. We have a powerful argument in trying to advocate non polluting vehicles, especially as the climate change disaster will make Covid19 seem like a minor inconvenience.
As Brydo has eloquently shown in his posts we have reached the tipping point when ev’s become as cheap or cheaper than their ice counterparts. Worth taking a look at his post on ID3 costs.
Any effort to increase the choice of ev’s gets my vote every time.
July 17, 2020 at 1:42 pm #119355This will be the one that most likely comes on the scheme 1st.
