MG has unveiled two major new models at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, accelerating its EV proposition.

The IM5 executive saloon and IM6 SUV spearhead the brand’s new IM – Intelligence in Motion – line-up and will target drivers “seeking the next level in electric driving performance and intuitive technology for elevated safety, comfort and entertainment”.

MG parent company SAIC introduced the new IM electric vehicle brand for Europe at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show. The electric vehicle joint venture has been formed between SAIC and Chinese technology companies Zhangjiang Hi-Tech and Alibaba Group. In the UK, the new arrivals will be sold directly under the MG brand.

The IM5 saloon delivers a new rival to the Tesla Model 3 and will be available with a choice of 75kWh and 100kWh batteries as well as single- and dual-motor options. Power and performance details are still to be confirmed but the electric Hurricane motors will enable 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds.

The IM5 Long Range can travel up to 441 miles on a single charge with the 100kWh battery option, sitting on a new 800V architecture capable of delivering a 10 to 80% charge in 17 minutes.

Prices start at £39,450 for the Standard 75kWh version, with the Long Range 100kWh model priced at £44,995, and the 100kWh Performance variant available for £48,495.

The larger IM6 SUV will rival the Tesla Model Y and will offer the same battery choices and single- and dual-motor options as the IM5, with a 3.5-second time for the 0-62mph sprint.

Prices begin at £47,995 for the Long Range 100kWh model, rising to £50,995 for the Performance version, and increasing to £52,995 for the exclusive Launch Edition.

MG IM models also come with “technology-led, premium cabins” that incorporate features such as Rainy Night Mode and 4 mode One Touch Park Assist, which uses the car’s 360 degree cameras and autonomous driving capabilities to perform complex parking manoeuvres automatically.

Bi-directional, rear-wheel turning technology will enable a turning circle on 9.98m on the IM5.

Inside, the models get an ultra-HD 26.3-inch infotainment display which is supported by a 10.5-inch touchscreen. All cars feature bespoke double-layer laminated windows, a panoramic roof and a bespoke audio system featuring 20 speakers with the addition of four in-ceiling Sky Speakers.

MG’s Cyberster roadster also returned to Goodwood two years after its debut and equipped with a new colour scheme. Also unveiled as a design concept on the MG stand, the Cyber X concept reveals a new direction for the brand’s design language. The compact, all-electric urban explorer captures the creative spirit of MG’s emerging ‘Cyber’ sub-brand combining rugged styling with a city-focused edge.

Finally, the MG EX4 returns to the show. Created especially for the Goodwood Festival of Speed by MG’s London design team, the MG EX4 reimagines the Metro 6R4 rally legend of the 1980s, equipped with the MG4 XPower’s electric drivetrain and sporting a bold new livery for the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Shipping is not the problem, both DFDS ferries are running to schedule and have been for 3 months, they even put on 3 extra sailings which were exclusively car only, not trailer freight.   I’m more inclined to think that KIA have just had so many orders for the Sportage, they don’t have any more capacity to build extra numbers.  From the numbers I’ve seen on the KIA owners forum it’s taking 12-17 weeks to get the queue for production email to 18-22 pick up.  And 90% of orders are GT Line S HEV models.

So, I’ve been following this thread with interest. Much of what has been said in favour of the Enyaq is undeniably true and I can understand why so many folk are choosing one for their next car.  For me, personally, I went for the Audi Q4 which is currently on order.

One small factor is that I am a bit of a traditionalist and cannot abide the tablet style infotainment systems seemingly stuck onto the dash as an afterthought which is the route most manufacturers appear to be going.  This is also true of VW, not only with their EVs but the new Tiguan MK3 is the same.  I do agree that the ID.4 interior is very bland and is a turn off for me, this coming from a family that has had VWs exclusively for 20+ years.  Also, I watched several comparison reviews between the VW ID.4 and Audi Q4 and the Audi came out on top by a long way in most of them (admittedly those including the Enyaq tended to put that in first place, largely due to its value for money). However, much of the extra kit on the Enyaq is ‘nice to have’ as far as I’m concerned and I think I can manage without the umbrella and ice scraper the Skoda offers

Due to my wife’s medical condition, by far the most important criteria in choosing our next car is the comfort and smoothness of its ride and this was the main reason we went with the Audi Q4 Sport with its Comfort Suspension and generous tyre wall depths, to the extent that even if the S Line had been available on the scheme, the fact that it has lowered Sport Suspension and larger wheels which means less rubber meant we would still have gone with the Sport trim level.  I just hope they haven’t tinkered with the Comfort Suspension too much in the recent upgrade.

Incidentally, I seem to remember one or two posts a while ago commenting that a shortfall in production of the APP550 motor was one reason for the VW and Audi EV manufacturing delays in December.  I haven’t read anything recently to suggest whether this has been resolved one way or another.

So approaching the 3 year point in our Volvo XC40, I was taking it in for a service and 1st MOT. Our dealership is part of a group that has multiple brand dealerships at their hub in Stoke.

So although we’ve put a lease extension in place to give us a bit of breathing space, it was a good opportunity to check out some possible future options.

First up was the Renault Austral. It was bigger in the flesh than I expected it to be. I loved the alloys, thought the interior was very good, loved the seats, stitching, dark headlining, steering wheel, and the tech. However, somone else on here mentioned the odd raised areas in the front footwells, and I didn’t like that either. The clinch for us was the size of the boot. It was much smaller than I expected for the size of the car. So that ruled it out for us, just too compact.

Next up was the Nissan X Trail. Loved the car, and of course the top spec was taking pride of place in the showroom. The car would work for us but for the fact we don’t like the available N-Connecta spec, as it has a lot of stuff missing that is on the Tekna, and for us that makes £4k for the auto a big ask, but we also didn’t like the fabric trim that we were able to see in the flesh whilst we were there. So its on the back burner until the Tekna spec may appear.

On to Hyundai to check out the Tucson. They happened to have an N Line S auto in the showroom which I was interested in seeing, and having run a Hyundai Santa Fe for 4 years and loved it, we were disappointed with the Tucson. Size wise all the boxes are ticked, but I felt the fit & finish, and quality wasn’t brilliant. Not bad at all, but not brilliant for the AP on the car. So not considering that further.

Next stop was Mazda to check out the CX-5. This was by far the stand out of the group. Size was good, boot size was good, decent under boot storage, and the Mazda interior really did underline our concerns about the Hyundai, it was simply a considerable step up. Great sleek design in and out for an SUV. What didn’t help was the showroom model being the top spec Takumi which isn’t on the scheme currently, but we could live with the Exclusive Line spec. So the Mazda is definitely on the possibles list.

Lastly as MG was next door we dropped in to checkout the HS. We were in and out in 5 minutes. Boot size not great, seat height too tall for the Mrs to get in, and we didn’t like the dash.

So whilst we’re in no rush to get out of the Volvo, it was definitely time well spent and has at least told us the Mazda is worth a test drive when the time is right.

Also on the horizon are the 2024 models of Tiguan and Kodiaq, so will check those out in time.

Hi there, never paid more that £15 for a ‘inside/outside’ valet most hand wash/interior hand service, are about this price in the Essex area,  would not pay £40+ for this service just not worth it, seems a bit of cheek for a very few minuets work by a team of workers, I only have this done when I am going somewhere special otherwise, when I feel I can do it, I wash and hoover myself, but does take much longer than the hand wash service though, a nice feeling to drive a newly cleaned car, or am I just a bit sad?

As for the hand back….leave it as you collected it (check well inside and boot for any left items) clean and tidy don’t forget to remove any stickers you may had added over the past 3 years, but go overboard the dealer will valet it anyway no matter how it is handed back.

I got my new HS Exclusive in June 2022. immediately there was a problem with the tailgate not closing properly. After 5000 miles of driving this car I can report problems which I’m not happy about. The electronics are in my opinion shoddy and unreliable. The forward collision alert system suddenly kicked in by dropping a few gears when the nearest car was about 40 feet in front, the engine screamed in protest and the sudden jerk hurt my wife’s and my backs and as we are in our 70’s we don’t need that. I spoke to MG themselves who said that they knew of this problem, the person said they knew a friend who had the same problem. I can switch off the forward collision system. But each time I switch off the engine I have to do it again before moving off, very annoying having to go through the menus to do this. Knowing what I know now, I would steer well clear of this car. It’s very comfy but very frustrating to drive. There are more issues but space does not allow me to print them all here.

I’ve had mine for almost a month now. In truth, I really like it. It’s a lovely drive and very comfortable but it drinks fuel. I’m taking it on a long run this weekend so will see what it’s like then.

The only real issues I have relate to the infotainment system which is awful. It’s not just the fact that everything is buried away so you have to go hunting for it, it’s the fact that as you mention, almost every setting defaults to factory when you turn the ignition off. It’s so infuriating.

Could well be ? I have an Ateca so same Discover unit and speakers as the Tiguan, it’s not bad to be fair and a lot better than the Mk2 QQ ? If I change in July I’m currently looking at the Mazda CX5 Exclusive Line with the Bose system so hopefully decent sound. I don’t think I can get into a QQ, I tried a Rogue (US name for the QQ) in the USA in December and really struggled even though it’s the same height as the Ateca. I can manage ax X-Trail but the AP is far too high for me.

The QQ is slightly lower than the Tiguan / Ateca ,but not to be confused with a saloon car,
it is still an SUV !

The driving position is different in that the seat is not set as high as in the Tiguan/Ateca, probably because the door / headroom is lower – to make it easier to get in & out the steering wheel has a flat bottom , but there is no disguising it, overall it is smaller , no doubt about it!

That suits me in that it made it easier for our little dog to get in and out – as it turned out, for the last 4 weeks of his life – and the slightly lower rear seats with 90* opening doors are great for elderly relatives & friends.

Choice is personal , of course, and after 55 enjoyable months with the Tiguan, it was time for a change and out of a fairly wide choice ( despite reduced overall numbers) the ePower was my choice!

Then there’s the outlandish mpg manufacturers quote for PHEV, especially if like me regulary do 350 mile journeys. If your pottering around town or going to the supermarket and you can do so in EV mode you might see those figures, but, you may as well jump straight to EV if thats all your using it for providing you can have an home charger fitted.

We managed about 130mpg in our first drive ever with the GTE, over a 90ish mile journey, mixed both carriageway and motorway, with small city bits at the destination. Still a bit off the advertised economy, but good enough. I’ll go as far as to say that people who struggle to break 40mpg in a PHEV simply don’t understand how to use it.

That said, PHEV SUVs are somewhat.. stupid.

Two things that you can guarantee about cars built in China. Build quality will be atrocious and crash safety will also be dubious!

MGs are exclusively built in china (and so will the Smart #1 be). While no BMW or Mercedes, they certainly aren’t “atrocious” or “dubious” in crash safety. NCAP ratings are just as good as any other manufacturer.

People like to forget that china has some pretty high end manufacturing, because they’ve seen a knock off rolex once. Shenzhen is one of the, if not the global technology hubs. Don’t underestimate chinese manufacturing just because they have sweatshops too. Bloody Foxconn is.. well, taiwanese, but they produce in china.

Volvo is btw owned by Geely, and so is Polestar. Oh, and of course, Lotus.

They know their stuff – and while there are plenty of knock-off companies (Landwind and whatnot), which are probably (never seen one) atrocious, the main manufacturers there are competing with VW, Audi etc, so have to meet standards.

On top, one should not forget that China builds more cars annually than the entirety of europe (not EU), USA and japan combined. They’re not building cars in old soviet brick buildings anymore, and we as “the west” would do good to not forget that (or “conveniently look the other way” as we’ve done for the past decade or two), or get kerbstomped in capabilities in the future.

On topic: i’d also like to the the Smart #1, maybe the Kia EV4 (though that’s probably more likely in Q2). The new Civic would probably fit well too, as well as the Renault Austral (if the Megane E-Tech is anything to go by, quality improved massively). Less realistic (=unrealistic) would be the new X1. Honda C-RV would be a nice re-addition, as well as new e-308.

Generally, i’d like to see some big chonkers return, rather than filling the list with small to at best medium sized vehicles.

My “if only” wish: Ionic 5. We’ve waited 13 months on our new Lease now, if that makes it to the scheme i’ll cancel it that very day and order that – but, unlikely.

I think the most “wished for” thing on my list would be a change of MBs rules, to allow for more cars (insurance groups, starting price etc).

Prior: SEAT Ateca Xcellence Lux 1.5 TSI DSG MY19, VW Golf GTE PHEV DSG MY23
                                Current: Hyundai Ioniq 6 Ultimate
                                Next: we'll see what's available in 2028.

                                  MG HS 1.5 Exclusive DCT

Took delivery about 4 weeks ago and we have covered just over 700 miles to date.

Initially the MG was not on our radar as I had concerns about reliability issues and with the dealer network, we looked at many of the ‘Large’ SUV’s on the scheme of which we narrowed down to a couple of vehicles that met our needs all of which had AP’s in excess of £4k.

These high AP’s made us have another look at the MG what also helped was that the excellent dealer we used for the then current MB car had become a MG franchise.

We were pleasantly surprised by the MG on the test drive, had everyting my wife needed out of a car, heated seats, driving and parking aids, electronic tailgate and was big enough just to accomodate a hoist and a chair for a ‘reasonable’ AP.

Car is built very well considering its price, the cabin is a very pleasant place to be indeed, tactile and quality looking materials used, no hard plastics or looks like its been built to bargain price  like a Dacia, in fact you could easily think you are sitting behind the wheel of a premium brand vehicle.

Outside the fit and finish is very good, the paintwork has a good depth and lustre while the panel gaps are good and the doors shut with a reasuring clunk.

Being the Exclsusive the equipment levels are exellent, luckily enough ours had the factory glass roof and factory tinted windows, sports seats are excellent and have plenty of comfort options (all electric), though for some reason no 360 camera only a rear view one (standard on both PHEV trim versions). Plenty of room in the cabin, especially with the panormic roof.

On the road it performs as you would expect, takes most ruts and uneven surfaces in its stride, handles very well and should be more than adequate for most drivers.

However as always there are trade off’s and as would expect the HS is not as fully polished as many of its more expensive rivals in particular the Infomation system could be better not as well laid or user friendly as some, Sat Nav system while OK i prefer to use google via the phone, I dont like the heater controls would much rather have a good old fashioned knob, also the info system has rebooted while driving leaving a blank screen.

Cruise control works fine but the controls are fiddly and as mentioned earlier the steering wheel controls would be better the switched around.

Though listed as a large SUV the HS is really only a meduim sized SUV, boot space is only average though as already mentioned taking the boot floor out makes a big difference.

Fuel economy is not the HS’s strongest point, we are currently averaging around 38mpg.

Despite all its niggles the HS is a lot of motor for the money and whats better is with the fit, finish and equipment you get you dont feel your in a budget brand  like you do in a Dacia.

If you after a well equipped motor that drives well and is value for money then the HS is worth a look and should’nt be discounted by badge snobbery.

Ordered first week in July. Picked up MG HS exclusive yesterday. To my surprise it had rear windows tinted and a panoramic roof. Dealer said this was because my order was still in the transition phase of spec change so I got both pan roof and tints. Very happy with the car

Just ordered an MG HS Exclusive DCT from RRG. Official delivery is end of January but he was confident we’d have it before Christmas. Another bonus was that the tri-coat red paint is only £150 extra on MB rather than £500 for retail customers.

I thought all paint colours were free on MB. Is the black an extra too?

Current car: Mini Countryman EV in very shiny black!

Previous car: MG HS Exclusive in nice shiny black.

I was gutted to find out that the panoramic roof had been removed from the Exclusive trim. I asked MG UK if it was temporary or not.

Also I noticed that the Asian markets have an all new HS model and wondered if it was coming to us.

I asked and this was their response which also contradicts the information @Dante was told on delivery times.

Thank you for getting in touch with MG motor!

With regards to your query, we cannot confirm if the Panoramic Sky Roof feature will return. In this instance, it has been removed, and MG Motor has added the Rear Privacy Glass feature (Exclusive only).

I have attached an MG HS brochure for you to view.

Unfortunately, we cannot confirm an exact timeframe for when the new version will be in the UK, however, the current lead time for new orders is 7 to 8 months (this is subject to change).

We hope the above information helps and thanks again for contacting us.

                                            Kind regards,

Ordered a HS Exclusive DCT for the wife on 3rd March, we were told the lead time was the end of April. Within a month this changed to early July, then October/November. By the end of May we’d been told there was no build date and the worst case scenario would be Spring 2023. Upto now this hasn’t changed and the last contact we had was about three weeks ago, although they’re now saying it could be the end of the year (I’m sceptical).

The order was placed through a leasing company and I’m a bit concerned that any orders through third party companies will be on the back burner as MG will want to supply their own dealerships first. I myself have been waiting on a Ford (also via lease) since March and this has now been pushed back to January/February, yet main dealers are quoting December for new orders on the same car.

I can’t fault the lease company whatsoever, they’ve been in regular contact with us each month to let us know what’s going on. Just want to know when it’s going to happen as at the moment there’s no scheduled build date and it could likely go past 12 months from the date of order.

I’m not sure in my mind retail / lease allocation should be equitable albeit very aware life and motability dealers move in mysterious ways.

my MG HS exclusive  auto is the most comfy SUV I’ve ever had in the scheme imho but I’ve had issues – many thankfully don’t – but for the only mid / large SUC auto  in the scheme u see £1500 AP it’s probably the best value all round tbh – because it’s so heavy and the engine it is a thirsty suv

but I’d still recommend it to others

This came and went so I phoned for a update and was told it was on the docks in China.  I ask for my order number and contacted mg  uk . Got a email back  today  10th  Aug 2022  stating car not even built  yet . It would appear this sales men would make good tory mp’s  with all the lies they come out with .

Just went to our local MG dealer to take a look at the HS as we’re due to order now. Quoted us 9-12 months for delivery and all colours are now available to order.

We were impressed with the car, I think it’s probably the best value for money offer on the scheme right now. On a disappointing note we were told Exclusive trim no longer comes with the panoramic roof.

Still at the top of our list but would probably go for the Excite trim now there’s no sunroof.

The tiny rugged EV won’t break lap times, but customers were quick to put down their money to get one.
The Citroën Ami may not be the prettiest electric vehicle out there, but 21,000 customers from nine countries have bought the EV since its commercial launch in April 2020. The latest version is the limited-run My Ami Buggy was sold exclusively online on June 21, 2022. As it turned out, people loved the little rugged machine, completely selling out in under 18 minutes.

The Citroën My Ami Buggy has a base price of €9,790 or around $10,300 with the current exchange rates. It’s powered by an electric motor making 8 horsepower (6 kilowatts), drawing power from a 5.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It has a range of up to 43.5 miles (70 kilometers).
