MG has unveiled two major new models at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, accelerating its EV proposition.
The IM5 executive saloon and IM6 SUV spearhead the brand’s new IM – Intelligence in Motion – line-up and will target drivers “seeking the next level in electric driving performance and intuitive technology for elevated safety, comfort and entertainment”.
MG parent company SAIC introduced the new IM electric vehicle brand for Europe at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show. The electric vehicle joint venture has been formed between SAIC and Chinese technology companies Zhangjiang Hi-Tech and Alibaba Group. In the UK, the new arrivals will be sold directly under the MG brand.
The IM5 saloon delivers a new rival to the Tesla Model 3 and will be available with a choice of 75kWh and 100kWh batteries as well as single- and dual-motor options. Power and performance details are still to be confirmed but the electric Hurricane motors will enable 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds.
The IM5 Long Range can travel up to 441 miles on a single charge with the 100kWh battery option, sitting on a new 800V architecture capable of delivering a 10 to 80% charge in 17 minutes.
Prices start at £39,450 for the Standard 75kWh version, with the Long Range 100kWh model priced at £44,995, and the 100kWh Performance variant available for £48,495.
The larger IM6 SUV will rival the Tesla Model Y and will offer the same battery choices and single- and dual-motor options as the IM5, with a 3.5-second time for the 0-62mph sprint.
Prices begin at £47,995 for the Long Range 100kWh model, rising to £50,995 for the Performance version, and increasing to £52,995 for the exclusive Launch Edition.
MG IM models also come with “technology-led, premium cabins” that incorporate features such as Rainy Night Mode and 4 mode One Touch Park Assist, which uses the car’s 360 degree cameras and autonomous driving capabilities to perform complex parking manoeuvres automatically.
Bi-directional, rear-wheel turning technology will enable a turning circle on 9.98m on the IM5.
Inside, the models get an ultra-HD 26.3-inch infotainment display which is supported by a 10.5-inch touchscreen. All cars feature bespoke double-layer laminated windows, a panoramic roof and a bespoke audio system featuring 20 speakers with the addition of four in-ceiling Sky Speakers.
MG’s Cyberster roadster also returned to Goodwood two years after its debut and equipped with a new colour scheme. Also unveiled as a design concept on the MG stand, the Cyber X concept reveals a new direction for the brand’s design language. The compact, all-electric urban explorer captures the creative spirit of MG’s emerging ‘Cyber’ sub-brand combining rugged styling with a city-focused edge.
Finally, the MG EX4 returns to the show. Created especially for the Goodwood Festival of Speed by MG’s London design team, the MG EX4 reimagines the Metro 6R4 rally legend of the 1980s, equipped with the MG4 XPower’s electric drivetrain and sporting a bold new livery for the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Topic: Scoping out the field
So approaching the 3 year point in our Volvo XC40, I was taking it in for a service and 1st MOT. Our dealership is part of a group that has multiple brand dealerships at their hub in Stoke.
So although we’ve put a lease extension in place to give us a bit of breathing space, it was a good opportunity to check out some possible future options.
First up was the Renault Austral. It was bigger in the flesh than I expected it to be. I loved the alloys, thought the interior was very good, loved the seats, stitching, dark headlining, steering wheel, and the tech. However, somone else on here mentioned the odd raised areas in the front footwells, and I didn’t like that either. The clinch for us was the size of the boot. It was much smaller than I expected for the size of the car. So that ruled it out for us, just too compact.
Next up was the Nissan X Trail. Loved the car, and of course the top spec was taking pride of place in the showroom. The car would work for us but for the fact we don’t like the available N-Connecta spec, as it has a lot of stuff missing that is on the Tekna, and for us that makes £4k for the auto a big ask, but we also didn’t like the fabric trim that we were able to see in the flesh whilst we were there. So its on the back burner until the Tekna spec may appear.
On to Hyundai to check out the Tucson. They happened to have an N Line S auto in the showroom which I was interested in seeing, and having run a Hyundai Santa Fe for 4 years and loved it, we were disappointed with the Tucson. Size wise all the boxes are ticked, but I felt the fit & finish, and quality wasn’t brilliant. Not bad at all, but not brilliant for the AP on the car. So not considering that further.
Next stop was Mazda to check out the CX-5. This was by far the stand out of the group. Size was good, boot size was good, decent under boot storage, and the Mazda interior really did underline our concerns about the Hyundai, it was simply a considerable step up. Great sleek design in and out for an SUV. What didn’t help was the showroom model being the top spec Takumi which isn’t on the scheme currently, but we could live with the Exclusive Line spec. So the Mazda is definitely on the possibles list.
Lastly as MG was next door we dropped in to checkout the HS. We were in and out in 5 minutes. Boot size not great, seat height too tall for the Mrs to get in, and we didn’t like the dash.
So whilst we’re in no rush to get out of the Volvo, it was definitely time well spent and has at least told us the Mazda is worth a test drive when the time is right.
Also on the horizon are the 2024 models of Tiguan and Kodiaq, so will check those out in time.
The tiny rugged EV won’t break lap times, but customers were quick to put down their money to get one.
The Citroën Ami may not be the prettiest electric vehicle out there, but 21,000 customers from nine countries have bought the EV since its commercial launch in April 2020. The latest version is the limited-run My Ami Buggy was sold exclusively online on June 21, 2022. As it turned out, people loved the little rugged machine, completely selling out in under 18 minutes. The Citroën My Ami Buggy has a base price of €9,790 or around $10,300 with the current exchange rates. It’s powered by an electric motor making 8 horsepower (6 kilowatts), drawing power from a 5.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It has a range of up to 43.5 miles (70 kilometers).
