I am never one to put someone off a vehicle because of my own taste etc but while they have a nice interior and appear well built I would steer well clear as they have so many problems that many dealers can’t fix and software updates that you have to pay for even not to mention the auto box that is junk straight out of the box.
In short, cancel and order something different, something that you have done a lot of research on at least and ask as many questions as you need.

sueHi Tony,
Can you elaborate on what problems you have encountered, as I too am having great issues with this car.
I just need some back up.
Thank you.

sueCan you please give me some information on what you have experienced?
I am currently injured from a faulty function on my MG HS.
Thank you.
Sue.
September 11, 2021 at 8:21 am #164006I would agree with the comments above. Some people rave about them, but if you have been used to driving around in an old car and it’s your first spanking new car it probably seems good! The standard equipment list is high, but it’s a case of ‘quantity over quality’.
I had one as a hire car when our last car had to go into the garage for a few days. You could tell that it’s built on a budget. To be fair, it wasn’t the worst car I have driven in recent years (that honour would go to the Vauxhall Mokka which I was also given as a hire car for a few days and couldn’t wait to hand back) but it is woefully behind the best in class.
One odd thing about the Motability scheme is that you can get some really good cars for around the same price as some really poor ones. This forum is a good form of research as we have probably driven thousands of different cars between us. I’ve probably driven a couple of hundred different cars myself!
Edit – just realised that this is a resurrected thread from last year. I was answering the OP’s question, which I thought had just been posted!

TheresaI received my MG HS Executive in Hanuary 2022.
Have been giving fewer problems with the electric boot, not closing. It starts to go down and gets stuck it went back to the garage and got re-programmed
Still not working properly, driving me up the walls.
Now the Sst NAV is not working properly either, keeps sending me to wring place, the electrics are switching off and now an orange triangle is appearing in the dash, this is quite a series problems.
Went into garage they cant find any faults which is a joke

Theresa- Faulty Tail gate
- Faulty sat nav
- Orange triangle in dash board serious problems for my new 2022 HS MG Executive.
Been in garage 3 times already, they say they can’t find any faults. It’s been re-programmed but problems still there, gad enough of this vehicle already

JohnMy wife has an MG HS auto on Motability and we are going to hand the car back in the next few weeks as we are sick of the issues.
1. Auto box is rubbish, with erratic drive delivery from stationary. Quite dangerous when pulling out in traffic as it is all or nothing
2. Sat Nav and parking camera stop working a random intervals
3, Info center freezes whilst driving so you cannot change radio channel, change heating settings or get to the nav system
Total rubbish and worst car we have had on Motability

Chris WebsterI got a 22 reg MG HS from Europe Car while my Skoda Karoq is in the dealers. No manual with the car, so log on to electronic handbook. Makes no sense at all, one part refers to another part that then refers back to original section. This is the manual and to be honest, I have driven worse, but design faults are screaming at you all day long. Little or no view through the rear window. Can’t dim the satnav/audio screen at night, no clues as to work/adjust the electronic steering. You get what you pay for and Motability don’t offer as many choices now without two or three thousand pound up front payments.

DougieBTo balance this off, I have an HS on order purely because I know 4 people with them and not one of them has had what I would regard a serious problem. Indeed, all 4 rave about them.

Jane MannersHi,
We bought our new MG HS plug in Hybrid June 2022; had problems with the tailgate straight away, also the drivers side folding wing mirror and front window would not open………car went to MG garage, they finally detected front electrical part needed replacing………….went on order in June/July and has only just come in.
Then we had problems with sat nav, automatic lights and android phone automatic connection……..
so when lights were on automatic; the main beam was staying on even when traffic was in front of the car, then they would not be coming at all. Getting fed up.

David.These posts are quite old and refer to higher spec vehicles. as someone well used to a DCT gearbox, it’s not automatic, it’s an automated manual gearbox via dual clutches. Unexpected acceleration or deceleration can cause clunkiness, because the software predicts the next gear you need. You need to go online and research how to drive a car with a DCT, because there is a knack to it. Sudden “flooring” the accelerator like someone stated above is a problem in Ford, Vauxhall and many other DCT/ DSG gearboxes. Example, never crawl in traffic, stop create a gap and then start, don’t drag the clutches by crawling along at tick-over speeds, it is very bad. Other issues described with software ? I have a friend with a Merc and moans endlessly about software glitches etc;

Heather pewI had a serious incident today where I was putting shopping in the boot and it closed shut on me pinning me down still trying to close .it got to the point I couldn’t breathe luckily a man saw what was happening and prized the boot open so I could be released I have really bad brusing on my spine and my left shoulder is so painful I can’t move it .I ve made an appointment to see my gp tomorrow. If that had been a child it would have killed them this is dangerous I myself wouldn’t have got out of the situation if it had not happened in a busy car with many people about

Mike Burrows.I got my new HS Exclusive in June 2022. immediately there was a problem with the tailgate not closing properly. After 5000 miles of driving this car I can report problems which I’m not happy about. The electronics are in my opinion shoddy and unreliable. The forward collision alert system suddenly kicked in by dropping a few gears when the nearest car was about 40 feet in front, the engine screamed in protest and the sudden jerk hurt my wife’s and my backs and as we are in our 70’s we don’t need that. I spoke to MG themselves who said that they knew of this problem, the person said they knew a friend who had the same problem. I can switch off the forward collision system. But each time I switch off the engine I have to do it again before moving off, very annoying having to go through the menus to do this. Knowing what I know now, I would steer well clear of this car. It’s very comfy but very frustrating to drive. There are more issues but space does not allow me to print them all here.

I’ve had mine for almost a month now. In truth, I really like it. It’s a lovely drive and very comfortable but it drinks fuel. I’m taking it on a long run this weekend so will see what it’s like then.
The only real issues I have relate to the infotainment system which is awful. It’s not just the fact that everything is buried away so you have to go hunting for it, it’s the fact that as you mention, almost every setting defaults to factory when you turn the ignition off. It’s so infuriating.

March 9, 2023 at 1:00 pm #214514Had ours 4 months, in that time its done about 3000 miles have had a few niggles:
Auto tailgate every now and again stops half way open/closed.
Info system has rebooted once while driving for 10 mins, main gripe with the info system is that it controls all the heating functions and it is distracting when adjusting the control settings (not unique to MG), also miss having a heated front screen.
HS sensors also seem to be a bit more sensitive and affected by atmospheric conditions than our last vehicles, especially in frosty conditions (system offline sensor blocked etc).
Fuel consumption isnt the best either though at the time we ordered the AP (2021) wasn’t to high and petrol prices were a lot lower so it wasnt a big issue.
Despite the niggles is a nice comfortable car to drive has all the extras that it easier for the wife (heated leather seats, auto tailgate, elec parking barke, blind spot warning, collison control etc etc) as well nice extras such as a full panoramic sunroof and tinted windows all as standard, not bundled in extra pack’s.
It does what it was bought to do to transport my wife and her aids to and from works etc, at the time the AP was fairly low and the choice limited; looking recently the AP was nearly trebled and there seem to be a bit more choice in SUV’s now and I dont if I was changing now I would go for the HS on mobility, however I could be tempted if I was buying private as you get a lot of car for not a lot of money plus a 7 yr warranty.
March 9, 2023 at 1:27 pm #214517I was speaking to The Service Manager at my Citroen/MG dealer and he was telling me had a Motability customer come in with a 1 year old MG HS with a fault which they found a small crack in the Catalytic Converter. So they put a warranty claim into MG and shockingly they declined it so Motabilty just paid it.

PaulI would say to perspective buyers it is great but for one problem. my hs scares the crap out of me. only due to warning triangle yellow , well m1 to Barnsley on slip road motorway m1 this yellow triangle appears. now whilst looking for it I may crash , on return to morley same motorway m1 nothing , and on occasion other roads too. SO HOW DO I TURN IT OFF BEFORE I CRASH , OR DO I ASK FOR ANOTHER IN REPLACEMENT.
September 18, 2023 at 6:28 am #233805I ignore the yellow triangle. It relates to the driver aid system (lane assist, speed control, speed warning, etc) and is not a fault nor anything to do with the functionality of the actual car.
For the record, I’ve had mine for 6 months now and not had a single issue. It has its idiosyncrasies for sure, but so do most cars. However, it’s super comfortable, huge inside (although the boot is tiny), reasonably quiet and not too juicy for a car of its size. Is it as good as my previous cars, (Sportage, Tiguan R-Line), no. Would I get another one because it has a couple of things that I find really irritating.
But am I happy with it? Yes. Is it a bargain on the system, absolutely.

SonnyWe’ve had our MG HS Excite DCT almost 3 years now. In that time it’s only had a few minor issues. On one occasion the big display didn’t come on. I turned the car off and back on then it came on. Twice in the 3 years the car wouldn’t start but the ignition came on. Both times turning it off and back on worked. Main niggle is how often I have to clean the inside of the windscreen. It gets an oily coating on it which then means it fogs up really easily. No combination of ventilation, temperature or air con settings prevent it. When we first got it, it bonged all the time when the doors were open but they updated it free of charge when the update became available and that stopped it.
Despite these few things it’s still the best option for us on the scheme and we’ve just ordered the facelift version DCT Trophy this time. Very happy with our MG dealership, it’s just a shame they done offer a collection service for it when it needs servicing like other dealerships have done in the past.

Nice to hear more positive opinions of the MG HS. I don’t think I’ve ever known a car to attract so much negativity yet when you speak to owners, the vast majority are very happy with theirs.
That’s the joy of social media I guess.

SonnyWhen we first ordered there was a post on here warning everyone not to order because someone had heard that the gearboxes were breaking and people were actually replying to say they’d just cancelled their order. I scoured the internet but couldn’t find one mention of it other than on here so I suspect a troll.
