We do not proactively share data externally and it would only be shared where required by law, for example in the context of a criminal investigation. All data is stored securely and used strictly for insurance purposes.
Interesting!

April 15, 2026 at 8:09 pm #353401What are these “rewards” that you earn or is this just a carrot on a piece of string on a stick held infront of a donkey to make it walk….lol.
April 15, 2026 at 9:11 pm #353402Ok well I guarantee I have hard braking within 5 mins of leaving the house more often than not, it’s a tourist area and a lot of very elderly drivers, sadly no matter how you read the stats imho this is our problem. So if they’re going to hold data against us how do they know it’s the MB driver at fault each time? I assume they’ll be following gdpr and giving us all unrestricted access to our data?
That’ll upset them put gdpr sar in every month not even allowed to charge for it now either lol
I think the better question to them is who is paying you to do this and how much are you being paid, to Motability. This is no way about insurance as such they have some way of monetising the data I’ll put money on it.
Again accelerating hard is not inherently dangerous either for example slip road.
Who is looking at this data and how will it be used? I had something similar from the RAC (wish I hadn’t bothered saved me nothing) they constantly had no data because there’s no phone signal where we live Norfolk coast. So are they going to penalise people with no signal? These things often have a few days memory at best so hats their plan?
I guarantee it will NEVER be connected to my phone
As for rewards, will that be like the Motability members charging each others EVs that they sent out awhile back ie total garbage
April 15, 2026 at 10:06 pm #353410It doesn’t have to be connected to your phone. Moreover, it is better if it is not connected, but installed as a black box in your car: my kid had on the previous old car and now on the brand new one. All the mates with mobile phones keep complaining on how sensitive theirs is, but not the box. It is significantly less sensitive.

The latter one. It’s designed specifically not to give you those rewards by penalising you for anything it seems fit to do so. For example, you braked smoothly but firmly to give way to a car on a narrow section of road, Drive Smart takes that as you’ve mashed the brake pedal because you’ve got feet like joints of gammon and boom, wave goodbye to your discounts in M&S. I couldn’t find one instance of a customer actually getting any of the rewards.

The mobile app version won’t work without your phone being connected to the little plastic IMS wedge. Otherwise you’ll get notifications constantly, day and night, shouting at you to connect it permanently or you’ll get your car taken off you. Always push for the fully fitted “Standard” black box option, as it doesn’t monitor your phone, and you outside of the car and doesn’t witter on about your driving…

April 16, 2026 at 10:01 am #353425Would take me two weeks to lose the lease probably, due to a grey haired army (and self-conceited wankers, usually in Deranged Rovers) having the tendency to apparently not see a 5m yacht coming in a roundabout, feeling the urge to end themselves right there and then. With frightening regularity.
I can genuinely say that there isn’t a day going by where someone isn’t pulling out right in front of me in a roundabout, despite indicating and driving a huge white whale.
The only thing i could do even more to prevent this is driving into a roundabout with the horn taped down, and i bet even then someone just doesn’t care.
And yes. Braking harshly to prevent a crash is marked down in the app, since it does in no way, shape or form take other peoples driving into account. Takeaway being, if you’re in the red for a week it may actually be smarter to just crash the car rather than get marked down for a consecutive week, since in that case you can prove that you weren’t at fault – whereas an emergency brake in case of being cut off is actually pretty hard to prove.
There already is a way to check whether or not i drive erratically. It’s called No Claims Bonus and points on the license. I have never made a claim, i have never received a speeding nor parking, nor any other kind of ticket. I have never had any kind of points either. Cars we’ve given back usually are “as new” condition, including a paint correction (though i’m getting too old for that nowadays). No marks on the car, no visible scratches, never a dent, never a curb-rashed wheel, nothing. No need for a box to create an issue where there never has been one. That simple.
That’s the one step we’ll not accept. Lease prices suck but whatever, mileage reduction sucks but we’ll deal with it – black box? Jog on. Forced us to do the math, turning out the fact that we can get the same car in the higher horsepower version including insurance, tyres and maintenance for less than what we’re paying now, so.. Hey ho.

April 16, 2026 at 10:49 am #353430“Almost half (48%) of customers on the Scheme who have tried to access insurance privately have been priced out – quoted premiums they could not afford. That’s why everyone on the Scheme receives the same comprehensive insurance cover as part of their lease. The total cost of this cover is shared across all customers as part of their overall lease cost. ”
Pesonally I think they are just clutching at straws with some of the stuff they are coming out with!
There is plenty of evidence out there on how data will be shared, which is contradictory to the latest media factsheet, including that from the NI trial, the manufacturer IMS (IMS One APP and IMS Wedge) & Motability’s own website.
The reports of NI trial, where numerous scheme users were removed from the scheme and the particular report of someone doing 117mph in a built up residential area, I think is utter bollocks and was either for the purpose of a media attention headline, as I wouldn’t put it past Motability, based on the fact they have never stood up for us scheme users OR there was a GPS or App error reporting current speed, which happens. I always remember the time, the tracker on my Mercedes Sprinter 316 recorded 212mph down the M4 and recieving a certificate for the fastest contractor oof the month, which I still have. Of course this was nonsense.
I’m also of the opinion every user of the scheme should have been asked for their a opinion on the changes to the scheme and not left to a Think Tank (Adam Smith) to target customers who’s responses would be favurable to the changes. A simple text or email with a link to an automated survey, would have been mch fairer.

Aviva quoted us the other day £517 for a new long range Tesla 3 premium, noted Tesla are cheaper than Mobility for excess mileage. Its a shame the Tesla is too low for us to get into.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
April 16, 2026 at 11:22 am #353437Whilst our decision to leave Motability pre-dates these latest announcements, and most of the 1st July changes wouldn’t affect us, a black box would be a step too far for me as well.
I have experienced them first hand when my youngest daughter had her first car and, whilst I never triggered any red flags, the stress of having to always drive as though you were taking your driving test completely took all the pleasure out of driving. Add to that all the ruddy bings and bongs of our current Motability car and I think I’d lose the plot!

Have you tried the Model Y, it’s higher and they have similar PCP deals.

April 16, 2026 at 11:01 pm #353500just had a read of this
Cars will be equipped with telematics technology that monitors driving behaviour, including speed and braking patterns, generating a weekly assessment of green, amber or red. Motability says that safe motorists (those maintaining green status) could receive up to £160 annually in rewards to spend – though drivers accumulating four red assessments within a 12-month period risk being removed from the Motability scheme.
Lets say your on the motorway and the police and ambulance comes up be hide you and you have to
put your foot down to get out of the way i wonder if you was to get a red mark for that :-0

You shouldn’t be exceeding the speed limit even in those circumstances.
You can be prosecuted for speeding for doing this the same way as you can’t pass through a red light to make space for an emergency vehicle.

Motorpoint down the road have used Tesla’s I will have to try one for size.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
April 17, 2026 at 7:09 pm #353582It would be completely pointless for me to have one of these fitted as I would rack up enough red flags to lose my car in a day. I may add that I’ve never had an accident due to my fault in my life and have had no points on my licence in over 40 years.

Or just go on to the Tesla App or website, and book a test drive. The car is parked and just go and open it with your phone.
I went to try the booking today and the appointment was in a half hour and i would have struggled to get there in time. Am gonna try tomorrow.
