While I don’t do it in the XC40 if I get a Phev again I’m more inclined to keep better track of my charging costs and rather than an mpg do a cost analysis as that’s a bit more relevant as while I only get 22 ish miles of electric often it’s charged at a rate much lower than 10p/kWh.
Each 32 mile day is saving me approx £2 based on 50mpg in previous car, and 45mpg in Volvo and 8p kWh
i wish id been more disciplined in recording though 🙁
August 7, 2024 at 12:26 pm in reply to: Ioniq 5 now removed from Motability, will we see the my25 join soon ? #286393So, If you have an order on motability site, you should be ok, and be upgraded, however, you are at the mercy of the manufacturer as you ordered a car that is not being made now. Technically you should be provided with a stock car if there are any
yeah, EV prices seem to have shot up 🙁 not a happy bunny, think I’ll now end up ordering end of Sept to lock in a price, then hope it drops 🙁
As long as none of my current choices go up as I need to order next quarter, though I guess if I delay a bit so that my delivery takes longer the fact we’ve done 61k miles and still have 6 months to run won’t hurt
June 24, 2024 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Electricity tariffs and setting up of EV home charging procedures #282903Not everyone can afford solar and batteries but if you can afford one of the two I would go for battery storage. In the case of having an EV charger with cheap overnight electricity and being able to run your house for 7.5/9 p per kWh virtually all the time, it’s a huge saving and a bit if a no-brainer if you can afford it. I would suggest to anyone thinking about it to get as big a battery as you can afford as unused electricity can be sold back to the grid for a 7.5p per kwh profit.
we splurged our extension savings on the solar and 5.2 battery, later added the 9.5 when our elec costs were going from 120 a month to 410. Battery would def be first port of call for me if it was one or the other though.
June 24, 2024 at 9:51 am in reply to: Electricity tariffs and setting up of EV home charging procedures #282863Junes usage to date (upto 22nd) is £4.13 including SC which is unreal.
June 24, 2024 at 9:45 am in reply to: Electricity tariffs and setting up of EV home charging procedures #282862@Brydo yeah both GE, my issue really is only when we use the shower as the inverter is only a 3.6 hybrid so we have a draw from the grid then.
outside of that it’s just the odd spot where the batteries don’t kick in in time
Son works weird shifts so showers in the afternoon often but as long as it’s before 4 it’s usually less than 15p/kWh and the grid just tops off what the inverter clips at.
best thing we did getting solar and batteries
June 23, 2024 at 7:22 pm in reply to: Electricity tariffs and setting up of EV home charging procedures #282826@shawry what is your solar and battery sizes?
3.9 Solar and approx 14.5 kWh battery (a 5.2 and a 9.5)
June 23, 2024 at 2:27 pm in reply to: Electricity tariffs and setting up of EV home charging procedures #282805So when my EDF tariff ran out (4.5p/kWh) I moved to Octopus.
i had, solar, battery and the XC40
initially went onto Octopus Go (9p for 4 hours) and the smart lite export (8p)
This worked well enough, but misses a trick in that export isn’t what it could be so I’ve now moved to Agile to take advantage of the 15p export rate.
my last 6 full days charges (including SC) are: -45.2, 86.6, 53.7, -20.8, -89.0, -22.2 (so I’ve been paid 36.6p)
and today I’m currently sat at 6p cost (inc SC) a full battery with an expectation to end the day on approx -73p
I have recently got a Zappi installed, so I could move to Intelligent Octopus Go to make use of the steady 7.5p cheap rate, it could potentially work better for me as I’d still be eligible for the 15p export rate, but every time I think about switching I get a day or 3 where the rate is considerably less than the 7.5p
if you use Home Automation you can get that to maximise you import / export too.
While slightly off topic, I’ve also switched to the Gas tracker tariff as it is consistently about 1.5p cheaper than the 6.03p I was paying.
Something with a raised driving position, electrically adjustable seats, electric boot, auto and cruise for less than the seemingly compulsory £4k AP would be nice.
Ioniq 5 Ultimate ticks all those boxes and you can get the tech pack and still have change from 4 grand, heck you can get the range topping Namsan Edition for less than that.
Im liking the look of being able to pull the car out of a parking space before getting in it, It wasnt top of my list, but I think it might be now, though I like the Scenic range and the infotainment.
Im hoping for a reduction on the Scenic AP, and not hike for the Ioniq and the Enyaq as they are my current shortlist.
I can order in August, and it cant come soon enough, I need to move to fully EV as Im spending a fortune on fuel even with the PHEV.
Just be careful with electric showers some don’t like being on for extended periods of time. But yes the more electricity you burn the lower your bill. Put your oven on that’s a good one, run a boil wash thru your washing machine as that’ll clean it if bacteria too. If you have an immersion heater use that during the period etc
thanks for that, I’ll put the shower on for a couple 10 minute blasts and everything else on you suggest 🙂
So I know range drops noticeably when doing more than 70mph, is there a marked difference from 60-65 and 65-70?
Just want to bump this as tomorrow is my first day with real negative pricing
if I put my shower on and just let it run (10kWh) from 12:30 to 15:00 would that work to gain me about £3? As @PR described, thats how we find it, but due to wifes health, she found the pressure from the sling caused a bit of discomfort.
The wife doesnt get out much, essentially the hoist hasnt been used much, but it is such a time sync that we have often paid £100 for a taxi instead.
We’ve toyed with a WAV, but the upfront cost is quite prohibitive on the larger vehicles it seems, and her powerchair means the smaller ones are a bit tight, also for the use it would get use, also we (me moreso I guess) arent keen on not having a ‘car’ and the wife is already self conscious enough about her disability to have it highlighted by a WAV.
Kind of realise I’ve rambled here without actually saying what I came here to say…… check out your local adaptation installer, they will have a demo vehicle and will come out and demo it with you and then when you are comfortable with it you can try with your wife too.
This shows the prices I have for the rest of the day, Import / Export

So I was on Octopus Go, Ive moved to Agile, because I have solar / battery and Home Assistant that automates charging the batteries and the optimum time and exporting.
I get my Zappi installed on the 20th, at this point I may move to Intelligent Octopus Go, but I’ll have to have a look at figures, as while Im currently not getting near the 7.5p cheap rate, I have had more slots cheaper than the day rate so Ive been able to charge the battery and export some for a better saving.
With Agile, without solar / batteries the main thing would be avoiding usage between 4pm-7pm as thats the most expensive period. If you use quite a lot of electricity during the day, Agile might prove more beneficial.
Congrats, and enjoy 🙂
Ive just requested the swap to Agile from Go, Im not sure I’ll save overall based on usage so to speak, however being able to manipulate exports should allow me to make a bigger saving.
With the battery, my usage outside of the 12:30-04:30 slot is minimal now, I’d get some draw when the shower is in use, but that’s mostly it.
will have a scan at some historical data and do some excel sums 🙂
Sorry, so looking at your pics I assume you are on fixed export at 15p?
and if I had your tariff, I could charge my XC40 and battery (about 14.75kWh) between 23:00 – 05:00 and I’d be paid to do so.
Then export a lot of whats in the battery lets say 10kWh for further £1.50 and let solar top up again, and potentially discharge again based on following days prices / solar prediction?
I need to pull my finger out I think 🙂
thankyou 🙂

With this, is it acceptable to get paid to charge your battery, then export it later when the export goes up to 14p?
And historically, is it generally less than 7.5p during the early hours
Im trying to learn predbat on Home Assistant, then I may switch to agile to manage my battery discharge/charge. though it should still work for Intelligent Octopus Go, but obviously not as lucratively.
mini is free? do you need to request one? Or is it only certain tariffs?
Im in the process of actually paying for a zappi install as I dont really like the ohme and although I can get free, Id need to wait until November. Im moving to Intelligent Go as soon as I can, but I benefit from having solar, and 15kWh battery system so I can charge cheap / solar and export at 15p so while its more expensive than waiting until November, its a lot closer than I thought it would be, and I get a charger I like the look of 🙂

March 21, 2024 at 8:04 pm in reply to: Motability and Callum seek solutions for wheelchair friendly EVs #268962If this could get made, and looked like this I would def be tempted, at the moment a wav isn’t something that fills me with any enthusiasm as a daily driver
What’s your current electricity a day?
if you estimate 3 miles a kWh you’d need between 5 and 7 a day for your car.
on intelligent octopus go that’s a max of about 52p (7.5p)
If they give you a charging schedule during the day you’ll also get cheap elec for your other use, so showers, washing etc will be cheaper then too.
do the sums for your current tariff and your potential, but I’d hazard a guess you will be cheaper shifting
