Couple of points,
UK allocation will be close to sold out as many people who had already experienced MG EVs ordered the 4 as soon as it was announced.
Dismiss Chinese EVs at your pearl, I remember plenty of people slagging off Datsun when they first arrived ?
The ZS face-lift model has just been released and the face-lift 5 is due soon, wish I could change now cause I’d order it in a heartbeat ?
I got my 5 in Feb ’21 and think the AP then was £800 & £1,200 for the 2 models, both 52kWh batteries. Since then they’ve increased the battery to 61kWh and added adaptive cruise & lane assist so deposits went up but anybody who follows this forum should know the AP can rise and fall on a weekly, daily, hourly basis ?♂️
I’ve got the MG5 and I’m doing almost the full 20k a year, so far with mines, and on the MG forums, there’s been no major issues with reliability ?
There have been some niggling issues on the forums with some cars but no more than I’ve experienced in any other car ?♂️
The only thing that puts me off is the position of the charger on the near side rear…. it just makes it more awkward to access chargers for a wheelchair user ☹
March 8, 2022 at 9:23 pm in reply to: Dealership rang me to change mot date even know it’s not due that month #179671An MOT can be done at any time, no need to wait the whole 3 years.
You could MOT your car every 6 months if wanted to ?
I went to the Edinburgh one a few years ago, it was good having lots of different cars all under the one roof and most of the sales people there were able to answer questions. So if you’re near change over time and torn between a few cars then yes… but given how quickly the availability of vehicles is changing how can they plan which cars to actually bring ?♂️
Also gives you a chance to speak directly to a motability staff member and moan about the declining numbers, increasing AP, extra costs for an auto, excessive staff bonus payments etc… not that it’ll make a difference but at least you can do it in person ?
In short it’s a day out but not worth making special arrangements to attend and if you miss it then no big deal (unless you’re days away from reordering?)
January 14, 2022 at 9:46 am in reply to: GRIDSERVE hikes EV charging prices due to ‘spiraling costs’ #174385I believe some are 69p per kW like ionity EV’s aren’t great in the winter when you’ve got to heat the battery and for those who are only doing short journeys could see less than one mile per kw.
Ionity are 69p for anyone not driving an affiliated vehicle or paying a monthly membership, then it drops to around 30 or 35p if I remember correctly, I don’t use them so not sure on their pricing.
Your last paragraph about EVs in winter is just wrong ?♂️ complete made up nonsense…. ? I’ve had an EV since 2014 so so that’s 8 winters worth of driving and we’d use my car before taking the wife’s ICE.
@DumfriesDik I was thinking about you 2 on Wednesday when I stopped in at Southwaite, I’m only up early cause at work ? feckin shifts ☹?
I should take a run down and let you see the MG5. I got it 4th Feb when it came on the scheme as it was the longest range for the cheapest deposit, it’s done 16k now in 11 months… some trips I would have done were cancelled due to covid and some trips we took her car to give it a run and cause it looks nicer ??
Morning Dik, still an early riser eh? ???
Firstly I’ve had an EV since 2014, love it and wouldn’t go back to an ICE… saying that the wife still has her diesel but it’s a sexy coupe with a 3 pointed star on the front so won’t be getting changed any time soon ☹??
Yes & No with charger anxiety….
Yes you can travel the country in an EV, I usually do about 20k a year in mine although its been closer to 17k since covid. There are plenty of chargers out there, your car satnav will probably shown them ? but there’s a few good apps to help find them (PlugShare, ZapMap, Instavolt, Shell Recharge, Gridserve, ABRP, Osprey, Polar, WattsUp)No they don’t always work so try to avoid leaving it too late before charging and if on a long trip in a strange area then have a Plan B. Non working chargers are a lot less common than the scare stories would have you believe but it does happen ☹. Sometimes there are queues but count that as a positive cause means it isn’t broken ?
I’ve got no worries about doing long trips in my MG5 and it’ll be the same in the ID3 ?
If you’re travelling less than 200 miles a day and charging at home then it’s easy… and if you’ve got preheating then nothing better than coming out to a warm, defrosted car ?
This is what Wikipedia says… Thermal runaway describes a process that is accelerated by increased temperature, in turn releasing energy that further increases temperature…. In chemistry (and chemical engineering), thermal runaway is associated with strongly exothermic reactions that are accelerated by temperature rise. Can’t say I’ve heard of it effecting EV’s so as been said, just media BS or perhaps our old friends the Daily Fail.
It can affect an EV but more likely to be your mobile phone charging on the bedside table all night or kids electric scooters/skateboards left plugged in…. much more common is a diesel runaway but it never gets a mention in the daily wail
Yes, something gets hot so goes on fire, the fire makes it hotter so the fire gets bigger… the bigger fire makes it hotter still so more fire and so on and so on until it burns itself out. A very dangerous situation but also very rare
Is it a bit like drinking too much leads to drinking more in a field? (Private joke, sorry folks)
Drinking in the field is fine, we’ve all done that…. it’s the next morning when your drinking buddy is up before 7am fresh as a daisy and ready to go ? that’s what kills me ?
I’d also add that a lot of EVs don’t suit me with the charging port being on the passenger side rear, I prefer them in the nose but could manage if it was on the drivers side rear, like the i3 or ID3.
My main needs were for range and I like my tech too, size and space for 2 adults, a dog, a wheelchair and a wee bit of luggage is enough so ideally I’d have the Kona which wasn’t available at the time, or the Soul which was about £4k so not worth it in my opinion. The MG ZS & the Leaf 40 were available but didn’t give enough extra range over my 30 Leaf to warrant changing so I’d extended that lease for 2 years and changed after 8 months.
There are loads of EVs to choose from now and more coming so hopefully you’ll find one that suits all/most of your needs ?
This may get a bit confusing because mines is 8 months old now so has the smaller 53kWh battery (standard range) while the latest one they call the “long range” has a 61kWh so a bit more range (30 miles?). The LR (as opposed to my SR) also has a bit more tech like adaptive cruise instead of ordinary cruise, lane keep assist, emergency braking with pedestrian recognition. However it is the SR that is still on Motability price list and I’d expect it to rise when the LR does come on but we all know how that can go!
My MG5 does everything you need, it’s comfy with a soft ride, it is fast off the line and can lose you your licence if pushed although it isn’t a sports car and doesn’t like being pushed, it also has a genuine 200 mile range. The boot has a bit of a lip but is a good size and shape. Space inside is decent for 5 adults and 4 could travel all day in comfort. As an estate it’s okay but not the best. It’ll carry a lot but the seats don’t fold flat and the lip could be a pain if you have to lift heavy or awkward items in/out, however several people have removed the rear seats and converted it into a van while a lot are now being used as taxi’s.
So far I’ve done over 11k in 8 months including 500+ miles in one day.
Seat height is a tiny bit higher than a regular saloon car but nothing like the SUV style.Oh Summer you really showed me up there eh? ?
Firstly I admit I was wrong to assume you’re gender without knowing the facts so I apologise for that ?
But I think it is also unfair to claim the name Summer as being female specific…. I quite like it myself as it’s warm, breezy and full of promises so may consider adopting it ?
Unfortunately I don’t believe you work in the car industry, at least not in any position that would allow you an insight into the future plans of a manufacturer… not with that spelling and grammar anyway ?♂️
But do keep posting cause you are hilarious ????
This isn’t an EV story…. it’s stupid people doing stupid things ?♂️
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Mitch calm down, I already said I didn’t know how the wpms worked and I was only using it as an example so let’s not get our panties in a bunch and go off track…. sorry ??</p>
Never mind the “autos are dearer, 2nd hand residuals, blah blah blah…..” how about helping disabled drivers stay on the road ?NewYork1 I agree it’s good to keep expenses down so now that I’m up for work, tired, grumpy, looking at a 17 hour day before I get back to bed, can I get some of my tax back so I can buy my own car and not have to pay for your DLA… if you’re going to be so selfish over an extra couple of £’s then I will too ?
Yes Gary, I’d expect Motability to not financially punish their clients who cannot drive manuals by making them pay more for an automatic.
And we’ve all seen that the AP isn’t directly related to the cost price of the vehicle… plenty of examples over the years on here where the top of the range version is cheaper than base spec because of the higher residuals. And it isn’t the manufacturer who decides the AP, its Motability and I’m sure you’ve noticed how they have been increasing and decreasing that AP by huge amounts not just quarterly but sometimes weekly, daily even? They must be adjusting it for a reason and could easily do the same to level out the difference in gearboxes.
I’m not sure how you can call it selfish… this’ll be my last post of the night cause I’m in bed getting ready for a 5am rise and a 12 hour working day tomorrow and for the next 4 days, I pay my taxes so disabled people get cars that in no way help me, so families get child benefit despite my kids being grown adults and married, so the government can build roads that I’ll never use, so the NHS can function despite me not needing it for 30+ years… it is how a functioning society works by everybody contributing and helping those who need it or would it be selfish if I withdrew from paying from these things which aren’t relevant to me.
Rhodgie – I’m prepared to be corrected, but I don’t believe that war pensioner rates are subsidised at all. The benefit that they sacrifice is greater than the higher rate PIP, so their AP is lower to ensure that, in total, they pay exactly the same.
Glos Guy I honestly don’t know why their AP is a lot lower, I always thought it was because they’d served and deserved it? I was only using them as an example to make a point about subsidies ? hope that doesn’t start a whole new thread but probably wigwam will use it to deflect ?
Daf just make it a no cost option whatever you choose ?
I guess Gary drives a manual then ? ☹?
Wigwam… “stereotype the disabled” ?♂️ what gibberish is this ?♂️ We’re on a forum by disabled people, for disabled people, talking about issues relevant to disabled people
You pick the car you want/need whether that’s an MPV, SUV, convertible….? they all have a different AP. You choose the level of trim you want/need to go on that car and the AP is adjusted to suit.
If you want an auto or a manual that’s a no cost option…. a bit like how everyone subsidises the cost of hand controls and the reduced rate for war pensioners… how all the workers (me!) pay tax to subsidises disabled people (you/us?) getting cars, child benefit, sickness benefit, dole money, TV licences for the blind, free bus travel, free prescription etc etc etc? That’s how society works, everybody pays a little to help out… or should we start charging the war pensioners full price and do away with all Government subsidies?
I thought Mike was very insightful ??????
Mike I don’t understand him either ?♂️
Wigwam it isn’t about the percentage of autos or manuals on the scheme to choose from, it’s about the number of autos or manuals that get leased. You say you don’t want anyone to be financially worse off due to their disability…. but you are!!!! Now you are having to get an auto when previously you had a manual? ?♂️
I picked the Focus cause it’s a common car that most people know about and a lot are likely to choose but you pick any car you like and see the difference in AP…. Nissan, Vauxhall, Audi, BMW, Skoda etc. What car do you drive and we’ll compare that?
Your last 2 sentences don’t have any relevance to this conversation and I feel are an attempt to shift the topic in another direction rather than admit you’re wrong
Firstly I drive an EV so they’re all auto anyway so this no longer affects me but it is still an injustice, plus it wasn’t me who started this post but the higher costs of an auto over a manual comes up often (when folk aren’t bickering about EV v ICE ???) so obviously other people aren’t happy either.
Motability is a charity founded to help disabled people get back on the road so they should be doing all they can to achieve that and I don’t think they are.
I was beginning to think you were a manual car driver and that’s why so reticent to agree you should be paying more but as an auto driver I’m amazed you don’t see the injustice in being financially worse off just because of your disability… different it you just couldn’t be bothered changing gear.
Anybody who needs an automatic due to their disability is out of pocket… see my previous post about the Ford Focus, and it’ll be the same story with just about every vehicle on the scheme.
It should be a level playing field, we all get the same level of DLA/PIP so should be paying the same deposit for the same basic means of transport, luxury extras like heated seats, electric tailgate etc are down to personal choice… it’s not that long ago we also had to pay for our own hand controls so thankfully that has changed, maybe the deposits will change soon too ?
Plenty of choice yes but still a variation in AP
For example if someone wants the cheapest Ford Focus they can get then a manual is £345 whether petrol or diesel.
If you need an automatic then its £595 for a petrol or £745 for a diesel.
So by needing an auto you’re £250 or £400 more out of pocket ?
Now Motability will know how many more manuals are leased compared to the autos and that extra expenses should be shared out…
So maybe the auto prices should go up to support the manuals… ???? At least it shows we have a good range to choose from but doesn’t help to show how many of each are leased.
You’d need to dig deeper into the prices charged… for every automatic sold of any particular model (Tiguan, Focus ST, Corsa for example) how many manuals were sold…. so if 1 Corsa automatic at £100 equals 9 manuals at £0 then everybody pays £10 so it’s level. A tiny increase for the manual drivers and a big saving for the automatic drivers. If Motability find these figures aren’t quite covering it then they adjust them next quarter (or anytime they like cause they’re good at that!)
I’ve long argued with Motability that there should be no financial penalty for needing an automatic over a manual.
There should be a difference in AP depending on the spec level and fuel of the vehicle… so a basic level car would be different from the top of the range and petrol, diesel, hybrid, BEV would affect it too.
But they know how many vehicles are auto and how many are manual and it’d be easy to adjust the AP to balance this out. Last time I spoke about it (a good few years ago now?) it was a tiny percentage of all cars were automatic but that’ll have changed (maybe someone knows?)
It’d be easy enough to add £1, £5, £10, £50 or whatever to ever manual car in that models lineup to reduce the price of the automatic.
August 16, 2021 at 7:25 am in reply to: Does motability care about the environment impact of fossil fuel cars #162010This forum really should be renamed ‘whichelectricmobilitycar’. Over half the threads these days are related to EV’s.
Not that long ago it would’ve been ‘whichTiguanmotabilitycar’.
EVs seem to be the hot topic these days ?
I’ve signed in so there’s no suspicion of being a troll, something that ajn never does ?
What a stupid, pointless, petty post this is trying to take a snide dig at EVs… pathetic little man ?
Intranicity great write up and its a great car… it was the one I really wanted but wasn’t available when I was ordering ?
I went for the MG5 which is really good and I’m enjoying but as I do about 20k a year the extra range of the Hyundai would have been nice ?
