I currently have a Tucson PHEV on 24 hour test and have a few questions for @kezo @JohntheLeg and anyone else who has one.
The car the dealer has given me, whilst brand new, is unfortunately the pre facelift model, so it’s a bit different from what I had researched. They are giving me a facelift one for another 24 hours when I take this one back, but it’s not a PHEV, so my education on PHEVs is right now.
I’ve just been on a decent drive in both EV and Auto (which was mostly EV) and deliberately let the battery run out so that I could then see what it was like on petrol only. All worked fine but I’ve just parked it in the garage with a view to recharging it and the ruddy cable in the car is one that only works in a charging station – not the 3 pin (granny charger) that I expected. This is irritating as tomorrow I wanted to take my wife on our usual ‘local’ journeys on EV mode but now can’t 😡. Two questions;
1) Does the Tucson PHEV come with a charging cable that can be used in a 3 pin plug as standard, or do you have to buy one?
2) There is a third driving mode that I haven’t used yet (Hybrid?), although I think the car may have now been ‘forced’ into it by the battery running out. Is this a mode where the petrol engine charges the battery? If so, if I take it out for a drive tonight (which I intend to do anyway to test the headlights) will I be able to ‘charge’ the battery? Is there a way to do this?
Thanks

Sorry @Glos-Guy didn’t see your post.
I see Jim’s Santa Fe, has the magic eye👁🗨 which monitors where your 👀 are looking, causing more bings and bongs. I gues we were lucky with the Tucson, but I don’t think we will be so lucky next time!
All together now:
Ting, ting
All aboard the Hyundai bus
We are going a ridePlaying a tune
And we’re singing a song
With a bing and bong and bingBong bing boo, bing bong bing
Bing bong, bingly bungly boo
Bing bong bing, bong bing boo
We’re all going round the bend 😂😂September 30, 2025 at 11:15 pm #314555Kezo have I got these bings and bongs to look forward too 👀
September 30, 2025 at 11:18 pm #314556Seeing Jim in that vid it’s identical to the father in law looks mannerism’s the whole package 😆😂🤣

Did it bing when test driving?
Intelligent speed limit is the wose but can be turned off. I recomment one of the star favourites are used, so you got a short cut to turn what you dont use off in mg pilot. It all falls under EU GSR2, though the UK hasn’t adopted everything, it’s still pressent and needs to be turned off.
2nd video I put up on your topic shows you – You’ll soon get the hang of it 🙂
September 30, 2025 at 11:33 pm #314558Tbh kezo I was to busy trying to get to the give way lines through the regen brakes 🤣😂😆😂..
All good fun I guess 👀😳
October 6, 2025 at 8:01 pm #315055@kezo I did a 350 mile round trip today, starting with a full charge and a full tank of fuel. The journey was 95% motorway which, when traffic allowed, was mid 70s mph. Two disappointments. Firstly, on the return run, with no EV range, I returned just 34.5 mpg again (that seems to be fairly consistent now). Secondly, I was down to zero range (inc petrol) for the last 10 miles before home (and the petrol station in the village) 😰 So, in reality, the total range with a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery is just 340 miles. Thats poor. The BMW could stretch to 600 miles, as a combination of a larger petrol tank, more efficient & economical engine and lower weight, and would have given around 15 mpg better fuel economy when running on petrol alone.
October 6, 2025 at 10:03 pm #315060Got 36 point something on way home Sunday, which I agree is crap, though I tend to use 3/4 tank there and back when visiting family, which is fairly consistant to be fair.
Went looking at cars over weekend with my brother, as he was ordering a Range Rover, which don’t get me wrong was a lovely motor, but Ive been bitten in the past, so he’s braver than me,
Also saw a BMW X///M in front of me. The 2 exhausts either side were vertical stacked and not seen one before. XM ??
Looks like a colourless M badge

October 8, 2025 at 6:40 pm #315155No idea what that is @kezo. Much as I love BMWs, I don’t like their Neue Klasse styling direction. Sadly, the X5 looks to be going that way next year as well.
Update on ‘bing-bong gate’ 😂 I worked out what some of the high pitched bings are today. It’s when the speed limit changes when the Sat Nav isn’t being used. Seems to do it even when you mute the button on the steering wheel. With Sat Nav on and the button muted it doesn’t bing? 🤔 Still had live traffic today but no response from Hyundai.

I don’t seem to be getting that, as the mut button silences speed limits even when Sat Nav on? However, I have found/heard the chimes from the Sat Nav you have talked about, when on motorways or major A roads such as the M6/A5 however, away from these types of roads it doen’t do it?
Like you, still not heard back from Hyundai and can confirm, I am without live traffic😡 I will esculate next week, I think, because the email clearly said we would receive “Plus” automatically and the Bluelnk app is definately showing lite or I could discuss with Motability and suggest, I will terminate if it’s not sorted😂
The current X3 dashboard looks a bit Klass class and like the X5, I think it will put alot of people off, with the direction BMW are taking. Likewise, the loss of idrive wheel under the 3 series, I suspect has turned people away. It looks like its gong to be Hyundai then🤣😛
October 8, 2025 at 7:58 pm #315159If a great used car comes along that I fancy, at a sensible price, I think I will seek an early termination as well. The way that Motability has gone, and continues to go, I can’t see anything ever coming on to the scheme that will excite me and everything will be a compromise in some way. I’m at a stage in life where I don’t want (or need) to make compromises.
October 8, 2025 at 8:57 pm #315162Currently we surrender £335/month for the cars. Motability does offer the cheapest option.
You can get something very different on leasing, you pay not a lot more for some good vehicles.
The thing is…motability will always be there….so why not go off track and get a shiny new toy for a while, it wont break your bank.

I agree that Motability will always be the cheapest leasing option due to the block VAT exemption, which is brilliant if you can find a car that ticks every box for you (which, sadly, I can’t any more). Don’t forget the AP on top of the sacrificed benefits though.
If we move away from the scheme I will be buying outright, not leasing, and I would most likely buy a used car, not a brand new one, although we can get VAT exemption if we buy new.
As you say, we can always move back to Motability if things improve, but I don’t hold out any hope, unless we decide that we want an EV and one that appeals comes onto the scheme. Getting an EV through Motability takes all the risks away, whereas buying one privately presents all sorts of issues and I would steer well clear of that minefield!

Same here RE the scheme being the cheapest option. However, I’m currently looking to replace my personal 220d GC, with something better suited for a family, we also have the Tucson on the scheme, but in reality don’t really need 2 vehicles. Like GG, I’m looking at possibly nearly new or a car a couple of years old and will buy outright.
As your aware, for various reasons, I’m not ready for an EV. The choice of vehicles on the scheme is dwindling, whils’t at the same time AP’s are sky rocketing. I hope, I’m not commng across as a snob, but there are much better vegicles I’d rather have, than whats currently available. I looked at Range Rover over the weekend with my brother, as he has ordered a new one, though I’d have to be brave to consider one again, but the last gen say upto 2024 BMW X series. The other benefit of not going new, is the level of bing bongs under GSR2 is vastly decreased and believe me, they annoy the sh!t out of me!
If you read through the forums, you will see I picked up an excellent Rover 75 V6 a few months back and it was a delight to drive, with various mod cons being the top spec and no bings what so ever, but a car approaching 20 years old, may not be reliable for a daily driver, so I gave it to my daughter who loves it to this day lol.
October 9, 2025 at 1:49 am #315176No one can call you a snob for sure. Although you may not need another vehicle, buying one you have always wanted is expected, it doesnt matter what make or model it is. Its your toy.
One of my mates dad made a fortune buying select cars, less than 4k miles and storing them correctly, and selling them 20 years later.
Now would be a good time to buy a diesel or petrol monster as they will become collectors items in a few years. For many ice cars, this will be the last model…ever!
A GTR perchance?? Lol..
October 16, 2025 at 3:29 pm #315674Just had a reply from Bluelink! Which seems a totally different reply to the question I asked😂
October 16, 2025 at 5:49 pm #315800@kezo I’ve not had a reply yet, but I’m not meddling with anything just incase I lose the live traffic updates! Let me know if by following the above your Bluelink updates to Pro

I can’t see myself reconfiguring for “voice commands” will acheive anything to the level of the service package. Will fire another message across in morning and explain that isn’t relevant to my issues!
In the mean time let me know if they get in touch with you:-)
October 17, 2025 at 4:06 pm #315866@kezo I’ve now had the same email reply to you, but with an added line after the first sentence saying “Please be informed that the free PLUS subscription was assigned to your vehicle”. I’ve just checked the Bluelink app on my phone and under ‘Current Plan’ it’s now changed from Bluelink Lite to Bluelink PLUS. I’m not going to follow any of the instructions in the email unless the live traffic stops working in the car.
October 17, 2025 at 4:12 pm #315868Plus has live traffic, where as Lite dosn’t😢
If the dealer can’t help, I’ll look on the grounds of early termination🤣
October 20, 2025 at 9:01 pm #316029@kezo Just wondering if you have the same issue as me? When driving in rain I am frequently seeing the orange symbol appear on the dash to indicate that the forward camera (which controls collision warning etc) isn’t functioning. This used to happen on a previous VW, but only in sleet or snow, when it would settle over the camera, but rain????
October 20, 2025 at 9:17 pm #316031My Kona done it and scenic does to. The Kona was more sensitive to it tbh.
October 21, 2025 at 12:55 am #316035Yes, it happens alot.
October 21, 2025 at 7:57 am #316040Yes, it happens alot.
Hmmm. That’s pretty rubbish. As I say, it only happened in sleet & snow on the VW and I don’t recall it happening at all on the BMW. To lose safety systems just because of rain (when arguably you need it more) is a poor design.

I find Heavy rain or lots of road spray, sleet, ice & snow + speed will knock most sensors out however, it doesn’t help when some manufacturers fit the sensor in the lower half of the grill, especially towards the bottom! The other one by the rear view camera, depends on how heavy rain is or it’s covered.
Can’t say Ive never been in a modern car that it hasn’t happened at some point and to me, it’s like going back to the days of when you actually had to drive a car and bing bong free😂
November 27, 2025 at 4:59 pm #318372@kezo Quick question, as a break from the budget fallout 😂
A few times lately I’ve been unable to select drive or reverse on the selector stalk. The car is started and P (park) is illuminated. I put my foot on the brake and select reverse and nothing happens. If I select drive a ping happens and a message comes up to say that gear is already selected, but it’s still in park. Today I tried turning the car off and restarting twice and I still couldn’t engage drive or reverse. In the end I locked the car (with me inside) and unlocked and then it worked. Have you experienced this? any thoughts? Thanks.
