I was reading the guff on returning my car for the new one last Saturday and noticed it said something along the lines of the GCB not being paid if there was any outstanding debt on the car.
I did think how could there be any debt other than unpaid parking fines but thinking now maybe it could be unpaid over mileage payments.
From the Horses mouth…
Only drivers approved by DLM and named as permitted drivers on your Certificate of Motor Insurance may drive the vehicle > You will not be covered for driving any other vehicle, unless it is a replacement vehicle, provided by or on behalf of Motability Operations Ltd in temporary replacement of the vehicle under the Motability Contract Hire Scheme > Personal belongings in the vehicle are not “
Just a little bit of confirmation about removing adaptions from a MB car. My car is going back under end of lease next week and had a letter from MB today and one subject is the removal of adaptions and this is word by word what they say…
“If you have adaptations fitted you do not need to remove them. If you want to, please arrange it with a Motability Scheme adaption installer.”
So if Tom does want to go down the private car route its fine to remove the adaption from there current MB car.
@Glos Guy
Adaptation removal is a grey area for sure and as kezo has said there’s many a hoist on E-Bay, in fact I’ve got one in my loft though I haven’t got the fixing plate as removing that from the car could cause problems with getting the GCB and would not fit in a different model car.
Why its a grey area is if you read the terms of the MB agreement we sign on delivery if you have adaption to the car it says and I quote what it says for my next car “Advance Adaptation Rental Payment £1,070 This is payable on or before the commencement of the hire term”.
The thing with it saying “Adaptation Rental” would sort of suggest your only lending them but as noted with the hoist in the loft I have also removed the steering ball with the remote control, but again not the part that’s connected to the car, simply because I think its mine, I’ve paid for it. I don’t always do it but sometime I do simply because I get annoyed having to pay for them time and time again.
I’ve never done it but I have often thought about ringing the adaption installers to ask how much they’d give me for the other half of the system so they can resale it.

I wonder if anyone seen the irony of the BMW in the photo on motaclarity site because we disabled folk aren’t allowed this type of car any more by order of the char lady at number 11.

4: No harm asking Motability if you or adaptions installer can take the adaptions of the car prior to returning. This maybe possible without asking, but I’m not the one to ask on that.
I’m always moaning at MB about having to pay for new adaption every 3 years but from memory from many years ago they did tell me I could pay the installers to take them out for private use but you can’t have them put in another MB car because the, then RSA insurance, think its an unknown risk because they don’t know how much wear and tear they have had.
This of course is for adaption that control the car and not for things like hoist and such.
February 20, 2026 at 11:55 am in reply to: Switch Car Rental announces partnership with Motability Operations #338402I was going to say who are Switch then seen the photo of one of their vans and remembered I seen one of their vans the other day and thought it was just another broadband or energy company canvassing for folk to changed their provider.
I can’t see this coming in, though we never know, but if you walk into a dealership as a private customer today and ordered a car the order price is set and guaranteed by the manufacture, well it was years ago when I last brought a new one privately.
Only the other day I read about someone with a private buy ordered a car at £39,800 and the price was fixed but in the time between the order and the delivery the cars price had increased to to over £40k making the buyer liable for the extra tax that that bring with it with no escape from paying the tax.
Unfortunately, because Toms daughter was newly qualified (3mths) and with just 6 penalty points within 2 years of passing her test her licence would be automatic revoked for the stated period.
I’m sure I’ve read, but not 100% sure, that if your banned within 12 months of passing your driving test you have to retake the test again.
Hi Glos Guy
I see what you mean but I’ve always thought that with taking the car overseas, not that I’ve ever done that, that you had to take out extra breakdown cover with the RAC. Was that not the case then, I might be wrong as I haven’t looked into that much because the only overseas I do In my car is the Isle of Wight. LOL
Reading the guff in that link it says “In the Autumn Budget, the Government announced tax changes which will increase the cost of running the Motability Scheme”.
With we, the customer, paying the taxes how does the changes in the budget, and I quote again but how does it “increase the cost of running the Motability Scheme”. It doesn’t increase their cost at all as far as I can see unless there going to off set the tax some how.
Sounds like there learning how to get BS headlines from the char lady.
In some respects MB are only looking after their and our interest however with that said and due to pick up a new car next week the dealer rang me yesterday and said they want to hand the car over on the 28th with a 75 plate.
I got in contact with MB and ask them if they were OK with that as a 26 plate in the eye’s a future buyer would have more value in 3 years times when its sold even if it’s still a MY26 car.
They don’t care its not their money but In a roundabout way it us that pay the higher AP’s because of depreciation.
Hi Oscarmax
Don’t suppose you have that number still as I’ve tried a few times (given up now) to ring DVLA medical department to have a Code 20 removed from my licence but best I got was a one hour wait with others being an hour and a half and only to be cut off without even a choice of waiting.
The number Motability gave me for the medical department was 0300 790 6801 but I found another 0300 790 6806 but all going into the same waiting queue that don’t give you a chance to wait.
In the past when I had to deal with DVLA medical Motability were indeed very helpful in actually connecting myself with the medical department and MB themselves in a three way telephone call however on this occasion all I get from MB is “sorry we can’t help with DVLA problems”. Gave me the impression they can’t get through to DVLA either. I was told years ago that Motability have a person in DVLA for just for dealing with MB customers so maybe yet another cost cutting exercise or just another one of those fables to make the people feel good.
With what @Tango is saying and my experiences with DVLA, or not as it were, makes me think they want us disabled drivers off the roads, along with the over seventies because were the ones causing all the deaths on the road where statistic say differently.
I spoke to Brookfields yesterday, they’ve ordered the correct easy release. I’ve got to go to Bristol and leave them the car by the sounds of things which will be nice :/ They apologised and explained that ŠKODA hadn’t bothered to tell them which one needed fitting at short notice. The creaking sounds from the clutch is getting even more vocal. Lovely.
Well well what a small World, that’s the same installers I’ve used on my last 3 cars, Dave Bates Controls before that with the other 3. Not had any problems with the two and only switched as Brookfields seem to be the ones the dealers preferred so I always leave it up to them.
I’m surprised their not coming to you for what should be, a simple fix.
I had the same problem with the old handbrake lever and an adaption that presses the button to release the brake and that adaption hitting the gear shift knob but lucky for myself it turned out I didn’t need the lever.
I thought Motability were getting more involved when it came to adaptions because on my current order they put a pulse on it because of the said hand-brake adaption I haven’t had in my previous 5 MB cars.
I had my installer on email and phone not to mention MB themselves nagging me to get the adaption I’ve never had and told them countless times with this being my sixth Motability car I know what adaptions I need, trust me. They relented in the end after they got their feet out of their mouths.
There’s piece of mind and there’s antagonising but my advice for H.K_R is to contact the installer and if you don’t know who they are the dealer should because there the ones who put through the order in the first place. My installers have a mobile unit that comes to me, only used it once but something to think about if you can’t get to them.
I’ve not ordered any extras on the car I got on order but my current car I added IQ Matrix lights and paid the price that was listed on the manufactures price list that included VAT.
So thinking that if we are VAT exempt either the dealer or Motability pocketed the VAT or if we do pay VAT everyone’s a loser except the taxman. lol
That is a lot of money. The Elegance I ordered was £4099.
Not forgetting the possibility of another £1.3k VAT to add to the AP.
I’ve just this past 20 minutes got home from having my car MOT, not sure about photos, can’t say I seen them doing any but info on the wall at my local Kwik-Fit says they photograph everything to provide proof of work done and also give you any of the old parts back if there are any and requested.
They had a viewing room with a video camera on the test bed but did not pay to much attention as the car goes back next month and as long as it has an MOT I don’t really care. I’ve looked after the car for 3 years now its someone else’s turn.
January 21, 2026 at 10:49 am in reply to: Is it just me thinking motorbility needs to up its game #332763All I can say is to repeat what Rachel the tea lady said and that’s “everyone will be better off this year” and if it isn’t as we know we won’t be, blame it on Donald Trump.
January 18, 2026 at 4:28 pm in reply to: if the DWP end your mobility element but the 3 year lease hasn’t ended….. #332464I was forced against my will to leave MB in 2017 after previous attacks on the disabled by are wonderful governments. Back then MB was helping us with a £2k leaving payment because we were unaware of the change in policy of the then government. If you renewed your car after a given date, that I can’t remember what it was now, you would not get that leaving payment because you would be aware of how disrespectful towards the disabled by government had become. Not sure if they help these days if you have to leave due to no fault of your own.
My lease in 2017 just happened to end at the same date I changed from DLA to PIP or not PIP in my case so maybe the DWP planned it that way.
I never got the GCB because of the £2k leaving money and no AP money back because the lease had ended but like kezo said above I think they pay you back the AP on a pro rata basis.
I’d give Birmingham a miss too, according to their chef constable some sections of our society are not safe there.
R-Line, plugin at £6,899 or only £8,277 including VAT.
January 14, 2026 at 10:33 am in reply to: Techmobility 9 way remote control/ steering ball – any experience? #332227I’m not a big fan of the lollipop remotes, had one in a hire car when my MB car was off the road for repairs and much prefer having a steering ball.
The Lodgesons and assume the Techmobility ones are adaptable to the users choice of lollipop or steering ball so maybe the Bever is too.
January 13, 2026 at 7:10 pm in reply to: Techmobility 9 way remote control/ steering ball – any experience? #332205I spoke to Techmobility today and confirmed the item on the MB adaptation list was the one I thought. The guy said it was designed in-house by a staff member from Cardiff. I said “did he used to work for Lodgesons?” (Jokingly). Turns out yes he did. No wonder it looks so similar! I’ve gone for one.
That’s a great bit of info Bandit, I will keep it in mind for my next change over. Would be great if you come back later in the year and give us a like for like review of the two products, not that there much between them I’m sure.
While were here can I ask if the back light works on your remote, for some reason mine hasn’t worked on my current one or my last one. It’s not important for myself as, like yourself, we use them by touch but was just curious as to why my last two remotes haven’t worked.
I don’t know why your CRN would change, mine has been the same since I joined in 2008 including the time I left for 10 months because of persecution from the DWP and changing from DLA to PIP.
