New Mileage Allowance

So if – as expected – the permitted mileage changes to 10000 per annum, I have a question……

I do around 20000 miles a year so am usually around the limit of the current mileage allowance.

Having done some sums, I would still be better off even if/when it changes to 10000 sticking with my Motability vehicle and paying the 5p penalty per mile over.

This would work out at £1500 that for me with the high mileage I do would still be more financially viable than buying my own car, even taking into account the PIP payments.

My question is – do you think this is something Motability would permit so to speak, or say it is breaching their fair usage policy once things change?

Nothing has been confirmed either way by Motability yet, so your question cannot really be answered until the scheme changes are fully known.

However, I do believe the survey sent to some customers had talk of increasing the cost per mile over the permitted mileage to 28p per mile – if so, your sums maybe a bit skewed – see post #338305 in thread below:

        Motability Change page is live

However, until Motability confirm things it is really just speculation at this stage. For example, some people hereabouts speculated on Motability increasing the AP for higher mileage users. But it is all speculation.

Could be a case overall of prepare for the worst but hope for the best!

Perhaps keep your eye on the Motability website ‘changes’ page for any update:

Thanks for that – in which case the 28p will scupper that plan!!!

28p a mile would scupper things for more people than very high mileage users. Rural dwellers would end up paying over. Given a lot of disabled are not cash rich it would be pretty difficult for them to find the big sums to pay – and prove difficult for Motability to get back from non-payers too.

As a rural dweller, I do 12-13000 miles a year, not hard when the nearest decent supermarket is 27 miles away and same for almost all shops. Hospital 37 miles away and wife has been admitted 3 times this year already – add in the outpatients visits afterwards and I’ve been going there several day a week since before christmas.

Wife is training for the London marathon, the only decent stretch of paths/road to run on are…yup…27 miles away. Local roads are too dangerous to run on and she needs a decent 16-18km stretch. She has a treadmill for shorter runs, but not really suitable for 3-4 hour sessions. Speaking of that, we are off to Inverness for the 1/2 marathon this weekend, that’s 250 miles or more easily. Wedding event the following week, another 80-100 miles for that, soon adds up.

Call it 12500 miles a year, that’s £2100 overpayment – hardly buttons when private lease firms allow you to adjust the mileage for a relatively small monthly increase (around £500 in total over 3 years to go from 10,000 to 15,000 miles seems about average).

In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.

              I agree with your sentiment

              But

Non payment could result in the ending of a lease

So possibly not that difficult a choice or to even enforce imo

At the moment MO only have a direct payment link for the sacrified benefit – Anything above the initial AP, MO would be limited on how they could claw back such an overpayment due to excessive mileage.

1 Disqualify from the scheme untill payment is made

2 Take the claimant to court and the court orders them to pay 50p per week untill debt cleared

                or

3 MO request the governmentment allow deductions from other government benefits!!

1 & 3 seem the most likely scenarios if this goes ahead and it stinks!

I was reading the guff on returning my car for the new one last Saturday and noticed it said something along the lines of the GCB not being paid if there was any outstanding debt on the car.

I did think how could there be any debt other than unpaid parking fines but thinking now maybe it could be unpaid over mileage payments.

At least I am no longer working – that used to be an easy 27k miles a year (sometimes well over 30k)….imagine being hit with a mileage bill for £14,280!

Oh, forgot about the drive to Wife’s dad’s early April, she’s desperate to see him as he’s just been diagnosed stage 4 cancer and is frail, so they estimate 3-4 months tops – palliative care only as he’s too ill for chemo. She can’t get away sooner as she’s a teacher – no hols outside term time. That’s 1200 miles, then same again for the funeral…could fly  & rent a car, but its a logistical pain in the arse with her guide dog, far easier to drive.

Back to London in April  for the marathon, but we are flying down for that as she’s working, so fly down with dog Friday night, fly back straight after the run on Sunday, home after midnight and back at work first thing Monday morning – she’s crazy…lol.

By the time you add up the excess mileage bill, you could have bought a car!
