The Drive Smart initiative for the Motability Scheme will be rolled out to new scheme users starting from April 2026. This program will require all drivers on a new lease to use a telematics device that tracks driving behavior, including speed and braking. The rollout will initially apply to drivers under 30, but it will expand to all first-time customers joining the Scheme from 13 April 2026. Motability plans to pause and review the effectiveness of this rollout and consider a wider implementation in the future. How things are looking, everyone remaining on the scheme will be inline for a “potential” Brucie Bonus Far as I’m concerned, its discrimatory and can stick it where the sun don’t shine!
It is without shadow of a doubt discriminatory. It’s either black boxes are mandatory for ALL drivers, or they’re OPTIONAL for all drivers. Anything else is like you say Kezo, discriminatory
I was thinking this myself, our car is always returned spotless with below average miles.
Maybe they should bring in a reward system for finishing a lease within a certain mileage. That way those that only do short mileages get a Brucie Bonus and Motability get to sell on a car with practically no mileage (if that makes a difference to what they get for them, I dunno how it works)
Beechiwawah! Hopefully that will drop back down by 2028….fingers crossed anyway
Big Yays! Shame about the hoist delay but could be worse! Might be joining you with the Tiggo 8 in a couple of years if the sizing works out for us, and if Motability doesn’t remove it or price it into oblivion obviously! Good luck and may you enjoy your soon to be had adventures!
Just dropping a follow comment as would be very interested in the responses to this question
Just commenting to keep an eye on this. Partner and I currently have the Kodiaq SE L. Very happy with it but, as you say, the AP was a debt-inducing necessary evil at the time. Next lease due in 2028 and am doubtful the Kodiaq will reduce it’s AP enough by then to make it a viable option so hoping the other two you’ve mentioned make it onto the scheme with AP’s that are a bit more budget friendly.
Shame though, the Kodiaq is a monstrously cavernous beast that I find a joy to drive…will be sad to see it go
The luggage area of the Tiggo 8 is a little smaller than the Kodiaq at 540 litres. The rest of the car is very well equipped and very spacious IMO.
Hmm ok, thank you. Would you say the middle seat in the Tiggo 8 was an ACTUAL seat? Or significantly smaller than the outer seats
We’re looking at next car, and the Tiggo 8 is on the (very) short list.
Is it quite spacious? Starting very early looking at possibilities for our next lease (won’t expire until 2028) we currently have a Skoda Kodiaq however we had to leave scorch marks on our credit cards to afford the AP, but it was the only non electric vehicle we could find that met our criteria (needs to be tall enough to accommodate a 6ft 6in passenger and rear space for two adults and a child car seat with a good sized boot) I know that things on the scheme will be vastly different by the time we need to switch over, but trying to gather info on cars that might be just as sizeable but less expensive. Any insight you have would be much appreciated, sorry for the ramble
If you don’t mind my asking, do you currently have the Chery Tiggo 8? Or is this for your future consideration sort of thing
p.s. if you go with the Tiggo 8 I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on it. It’s on our shortlist for possibilities once lease is up in 2028 as the Kodiaq AP was quite steep but our choice at the time of lease was limited and our time to explore options very short
Definitely think they will accommodate you with the early termination under the circumstances. Good choice with the Kodiaq as well. My partner and I have the Kodiaq hybrid, which is slighter smaller boot compared to the petrol version, but we find the boot positively cavernous! (845l for our hybrid, 910l for the petrol) And that’s without folding the back seats down
Can’t speak for the PHEV but my partner and I currently have the hybrid Kodiaq. It’s a good car, very spacious for a large family, I do find it to be quite thirsty at low speeds though. It barely hits above 20mpg around town, seems to be extremely choosy as to when it kicks in the 2 cylinder hybrid mode. Dunno if this will be of any use to you or not but thought I would share our experience
Just to throw my hat into the ring on this one… My partner and I placed an order for our 1st Motability vehicle for a hybrid Vauxhall Frontera middle of last year, even paid a £99 deposit which I was informed via the lovely people on this Forum that you don’t legally have to do, however the build/delivery kept getting pushed back and we needed the car for a family holiday in late August. We found an alternative vehicle (Skoda Kodiaq) and was able to cancel the Frontera order, and get the deposit back, with no muss or fuss. Until you put your pin in at collection it’s perfectly fine
I remember quite well – hows the Kodiaq?
Hey Kezo,
All going well so far. Family finds it really comfortable, it’s easy to drive and has boot space for days! Bit worried what we’re gonna do once the 3yrs is up what with all the current goings on in the news etc, not had the best back end to the year to say the least, but another high value AP would’ve been tough before the faeces hit the fan, it will be damn near impossible come 2028, but will have to wait and see what’s on offer at that point

UPDATE!
Heard from the dealership a day or so again. Our Kodiaq should arrive in the country by end of next week. Have been given VIN number and License plate. If all goes well it looks like we might be hitting collection day early next month, which would be perfect as we have family holiday planned for end of August and we won’t all fit in my clapped out Prius. Have received the lease paperwork through the post from Motability. All seems to be going well!
Unrelated to the topic as a whole, but why do Cupra not say what kind it is on the back?
Whether it’s Born, or Terramare (something like that) and whatever the other ones are called. When browsing the list on Scheme the pictures are unreliable for sizes, so rather than drag everyone to a dealership on a whim and a prayer I like to have a little shufty while I’m out and about on foot to size them up. Cupra never tells me what they are though, very frustrating.
Anyway, rant over lol thanks for listening
Yes appointee, that’s the word. Cheers Kezo, always appreciate your feedback
A nominated driver cannot collect the car without the claimant unfortunately.
Ok thank you. Just trying to plan ahead.
And if a parent is on the account as being able to act on behalf of the actual claimant would that be the person that could sign with the pin?
Didn’t really have a choice in colour as only one that he could find, so it’s white. Which is fine, not really fussed, and the one we sat in at the showroom was white and my fiancée said she really liked it so lucked out about there I think.
Quick update – Order for the Kodiaq seems to have gone through ok. Waiting on the eligibility referral thingy to go though after we passed it. Been quoted delivery date for end of this month if we’re very lucky, next month for ‘definite’. Won’t be counting any egg-laying farm birds until they’re telling me I can come and collect it but…fingers crossed
Have emailed the guy today and deffo will be phoning in the morning. Fingers crossed and will update sometime tomorrow
Not sure if order can be placed untill Frontera canceled, although nothing stopping Skoda from reserving and getting wheels in motion. You could always ring Moto and ak them to cancel, incase moto rep isn’t it. At least you will know the orders cancelled with Motability straight away! Hope all goes well 🙂
Frontera is already showing as cancelled on Motability website so that bit of it should be fine. Just hope we haven’t missed one of the two the guy found
Well we spoke to a Skoda dealership today, the guy reckoned he could find two 7 seater Kodiaq SE L’s and that we should be able to get it by beginning of next month. So we chase up the Vauxhall dealership and finally cancel the Frontera order (we were holding on as a safety net but now a new special needs car seat has thrown the back seat room into doubt when we’ve already proven the kodiaq doable with new seat) blind panic waiting for cancellation to go through in time to drive to the Skoda dealership before they shut at 4.30pm to pounce on the offer. We do some googling to learn we apparently can still place an order while the cancellation process is going through. So we load up and head off for the 1hr+ drive. A short while into the drive the Frontera cancellation goes through…HUZZAH! not a wasted trip! We arrive at the dealership 40mins before closing!….to be told the person we spoke has gone home, family emergency, and noone there has the contacts and expertise to locate the cars he did for us to order one “sorry”. So back to the car we trudge just in time for a thunderstorm to kick in and drown us.
Our…..luck….sucks
Yes I gy=uessed the Kamiq would be a no no however, when you see how many can pile in a mini, you never know! As for large cars, the choice is limited and the more you pay – If you wanted to save £400-500, the new Peugeot 5008 hybrid GT is worth a look, being a similar in size to the Kodiaq. Either way a better predicted delivery speed is key,as it could cost you the £500 saving in MOT work! Good luck!
Yeah the 5008 is next on the looky looky list of the Kodiaq flops
Good new, apart from the AP!! 🙂 I know the feeling, I’m just a bit short of 6′ 6″ and my Autistic son is a shorty at 6’4″, but he is, shall we say, “ample” in that he’s almost 5 stone heavier than me 🙁 There are times when he won’t sit in the front so both front and rear space are an issue. Best fitting car we had was a 2008 Honda CRV, we loved that car!. We even managed to squeeze into a Jazz for a while when I lost my PIP, I then bought a Yeti, sold that and leased another on a really cheap deal and then had some idiot jump out of an oversized Transit coming towards me doing 40mph which wrote it off, and almost me as well!. At that time I’d just gotten my PIP back and ordered a Tiguan but along came Covid and no Tiguan delivery!, so ended up in a Seat Ateca (5 seat version of the Kodiak), that was perfectly OK for 3 years then moved over to BEV with the current Skoda Enyaq. it’s a bit of a squeeze for him but he manages front and back OK.
Scheme really does price out families with above average dimensions don’t they
