Dreaded Black Boxes

Was just reading an online piece stating that, allegedly,

“Drivers under the age of 30 on Motability will have to have a black box fitted from now on.

New rules come in today for Motability drivers – with a 10-day limit to sign up. The new black boxes will be installed for all drivers leasing their first car or wheelchair accessible vehicle on the Motability Scheme and all vehicles where there is a driver on the lease under 30 years old.

Vehicles will be equipped with telematics devices that will track driving behaviour, including speed and braking patterns, and will generate a weekly rating of green, amber or red. Motability says that safe drivers (ones that stay in the green) could earn up to £160 a year in rewards to spend – however drivers with four red ratings over a 12-month period could be removed from the Motability scheme.”

Regardless of the animosity this course of action has already stirred up within the disabled community….why is it only Black Boxers that get rewarded for driving safely? Where’s the £160 of rewards to spend for those of us that are over 30 and haven’t flattened the neighbours Chihuahua doing burnouts and donuts in our cul de sacs?

I was thinking this myself, our car is always returned spotless with below average miles.

Maybe they should bring in a reward system for finishing a lease within a certain mileage. That way those that only do short mileages get a Brucie Bonus and Motability get to sell on a car with practically no mileage (if that makes a difference to what they get for them, I dunno how it works)

The Drive Smart initiative for the Motability Scheme will be rolled out to new scheme users starting from April 2026. This program will require all drivers on a new lease to use a telematics device that tracks driving behavior, including speed and braking. The rollout will initially apply to drivers under 30, but it will expand to all first-time customers joining the Scheme from 13 April 2026. Motability plans to pause and review the effectiveness of this rollout and consider a wider implementation in the future.

How things are looking, everyone remaining on the scheme will be inline for a “potential” Brucie Bonus

Far as I’m concerned, its discrimatory and can stick it where the sun don’t shine!

There are a couple of locations, supermarket parking, where satnav pings a warning and says “wrong way detected” that happens twice a week, thats gonna trigger a red on the black box.

Also, one week every year, a one way street is changed to a 2 way street, and again the warning – wrong way detected-.

It doesnt bode well for Motability and its customer base.

It is without shadow of a doubt discriminatory. It’s either black boxes are mandatory for ALL drivers, or they’re OPTIONAL for all drivers. Anything else is like you say Kezo, discriminatory

The Satnav on our Enyaq constantly tells us a 30 zone is a 20, it’s incorrect, how many red marks would we get for that?

In this case, you’d be going well under the speed limit, so no red marks 😉

It could be classed as failing to make progress or undue hesitation. It raises a bigger question with the accuracy of the information they are using.

The satnav on my car consisitantly says one road near me is a 30 when its a 60 and another is a 40 when it actually is also a 60

My car even beeps to say I have gone over the speed limit on those roads when I haven’t.

Not sure if people know this but apparently the policyholder has to also download the app and add the drivers even if the policyholder doesn’t drive, someone has had their insurance cancelled because the policyholder didn’t do it.

Our eldest lad is 27 this year and is on our insurance as occasionally he has to move the cars around. This means if we keep him on the insurance we would need to have a black box on both cars. He refuses to have one too as it’s compulsory even though hes been driving for 10 years and never had an accident. So that’s 3 cars theyre going to lose.
