Thanks for that. I actually have an MG HS at the moment and regularly do 340 mile round trips in a day with not even a twinge of discomfort. It’s like an armchair!

Thanks. I really like it (I want the N-Line) but I actually drove the Ultimate which was why I was surprised that the seats felt a little firm.

If the government EV grant has been applied to the car to make them cheaper to Motability, can anyone explain why so many AP’s have gone through the roof?

The AP of almost every car on my list has gone through the roof. For example, the basic model of the Ford Explorer, now back on, has leapt from a £0 AP to over £2711.

Factoring in the loss of the £600 WPMS automatic gearbox allowance, then I suspect that may well be me off the scheme.

I’d certainly like to see the IM5 and 6 on there, but I’d be happy with the Ford Explorer/Capri back on the list with a decent AP.

Hi, I’m actually still on my first one, although I’ve had it for almost three years now with around 36K on the clock.

The problem with social media is that people rarely use it when they have something good to say, but when they have something bad happen to them, they’re happy for the world to know all about it. Silly really, but there you go.

So my honest opinion as the owner of a 22 plate HS auto is that by and large, it’s a superb car. It’s fabulously well equipped, reasonably economical (I’ve seen 51 on a long run up the A1) and comfort wise, it’s amazing. Not only is it huge inside, but as someone who suffers with serious lower back issues, I regularly do two and a half hour trips without a break and have never had any stiffness on arrival. It’s not the most dynamic of drives, but it’s a large car not a 3 series BMW and is certainly equal to most large SUV’s in its class. Indeed, it’s better than the VW Tiguan I had before it although that was an R Line so had stiffer suspension.

The gearbox is a DCT and takes a little getting used to at first but once you are (and it beds in) it’s smooth as silk. Put it in sport (or super sport if you have the magic red button) and it’ll take off like a cat with it’s bum on fire.

As for the electrics, other than a blown number plate bulb, I’ve never had a single issue. The driver aids, once set up to suit the driver (me) work perfectly and the adaptable cruise control is very effective.

The only issue I have with the car is the infotainment setup. Not only is the sat nav incredibly slow, but the DAB radio is awful with no ability to store stations at all. Easily saved by using Apple CarPlay, but still really irritating. That said, I believe the latest version is much, much better so I reserve judgment on that. I must also say that whilst I love mine, I do think that the latest models are much better looking both inside and out.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. In fact I frequently do and I’d certainly have another one were I not one of those people who never have the same car twice. I’m also seriously considering going electric which would rule the HS out.

My one piece of advice, research your dealer. Mine is OK, and they’re local so that works for me but I have heard some horror stories over the years.

Random question for a non EV owning luddite: if your charger is on the wall of your ground floor flat, what’s to stop anyone else using it? Is there a cut off inside your property? Or is it controlled by an app of some kind?

yes in the app you can set it to authorise each charge

Phew! I’d hate to think that if I did ever get an EV, my charger would be available to all and sundry!

Dougie, was the 16 pro changed USB C connection for charging/carplay, rather than the Apple proprietary connections seen on older iphones? The HS have USB A or USB C ports?

Yes, C-Port on the phone, A-Port on the car.

So, having disconnected the phone from the car, deleted everything from the phone and then reconnected for what seems like the tenth time, it now seems to be working as it should.

In settings > Siri and search, are all three Siri settings enabled including “listen to Hey Siri”. If your phone has IOS 15 or earlier – Settings > “Privacy & Security” > “Microphone” > make sure that “CarPlay” is enabled. Make sure mic isn’t muted on the cars display in Carplay. Wipe the lead terminals with a soft dry cloth and blow in lightning port on the phone. Some of the above solutions crosses over, what is already working when you make a call, but it’s worth going through them anyway. Also try using a different USB port in the car. Try your phone in another car, preferably a MG Maybe try a new lead for how much they cost on Amazon, because the MFI chips can start to breakdown. What version phone have you got?

Thanks for all this. I have a 16 Pro running 18.6.

The issue is that when plugged in, the phone connects and I can make calls from the screen, but the mic isn’t on the list of available microphones and the sound doesn’t come through the speakers.

The mic isn’t even showing on the list of available mics, so to actually talk and listen, I have to switch to the phones built in speaker.

If it works through bluetooth, and another phone works just fine through cable, the issue is your phone. Hey there, i’m captain obvious. There’s a setting on your phone that lets you chose the audio output, you need to make sure that that’s set to your cars speakers, not your phone. Another person mentioned this on reddit, which apparently helped a few people. “Check in Settings\Accessibility\Touch\Call Audio Routing\ (does it say automatic or speaker?) (this assumes iOS 13.x) — if not iOS13, hunt for where a similar setting is” I don’t have an apple device, so i can only tell you what to look for, not where to find it. But i’m pretty sure that that’s the issue.

It’s set to auto. Just tested it and it’s still not connecting properly.

                                  Hey ho…

Are you using a USB to Lightning cable? If your not using a genuine USB cable, you need to ensure it has a MFI certified chip.

I am. It was actually working fine, then for some reason, just stopped.

@ DougieB it won’t be everyone’s choice but if you like it it’s one hell of a car and the AP is ridiculously cheap and that’s before some fantastic discounts that are on offer. Add to that there are many in stock so a week or so delivery is common. I would take the wife for a test drive in one and see how she feels. The Ultimate has every bit of tech you need and my wife loves the interior, we have the light grey option which makes it feel even bigger than it already is. My grandkids think it’s fantastic with my grandson, in particular, loving it.

I hear you, and as a WPMS leaser, the AP for the ultimate is only £387 which is crazy. However, I’ve never been convinced by the looks anyway (the back end isn’t exactly pretty), and if her indoors dislikes it, it’s a non-starter.

In cases like this, ALWAYS go through your insurance company.

There are far too many risks associated with this kind of thing these days and it’s simply not worth putting yourself in a position where someone might be looking to take advantage of you. Not only that, but whilst you say your car isn’t damaged, it may well be. It’s just not visible to you. That may cost you in the long term.

Besides, your insurance is part of your contract with Motability anyway so is effectively ‘free’ so why not use it?

*I know it’s not free, but you know what I mean.

Exactly that. It’s pretty much impossible to police properly. However, is it Motabiliy’s duty to police it? Or is it the DWP’s.

I’d argue, it’s very much the latter’s because they after all, are the ones handing out OUR money. Which is probably why it won’t ever be done.

The problem is that when you have a system that involves getting something for what is perceived as ‘free’ you will get people who are happy to exploit it.

                                                  Sorry, only just seen this.

So the MG HS…. I’ve had mine for well over 2 years and 22,000 miles and it’s never missed a beat. Superbly comfortable even on a 340 mile trip and a really lovely drive.

The engine is fabulous but it’s not the most frugal of cars although to be fair, it’s big, I’m lead footed and it still gives around 40mpg on a run which isn’t bad.

The only down side is the tech. I can live with most things but there are a few little quirks which really irritate me, the useless DAB radio being the most annoying. That said, if they’ve fixed those on the latest version I’d have one without a moments hesitation. If they haven’t, I won’t.

If your new car is an auto, you don’t need the handbrake anyway. Once the cars in park, the gearbox is locked.

I had numerous American cars in my younger days and haven’t had a manual car since the 90’s and never had a single problem because the handbrake hadn’t been applied.

It’s beyond me why anyone would want an old fashioned manual operated one instead.
