Just test drove an Ionic 5 which would be my first EV (something I never thought I’d say!)
An absolutely amazing car but my one concern was that even on a test drive, the seats felt quite hard. For someone with lower back issues, this could well be a red line for me so has anyone who has one got any comments on this?
Current car: Mini Countryman EV in very shiny black!
Previous car: MG HS Exclusive in nice shiny black.

We have had one for a month now and it is really comfortable, but of cause we don’t have any back issues.
October 10, 2025 at 4:58 pm #315339Thanks. I really like it (I want the N-Line) but I actually drove the Ultimate which was why I was surprised that the seats felt a little firm.

October 10, 2025 at 5:48 pm #315343We found the leather seats softened up over time when we had the Tucson Ultimate. This time rond we wnt for the same car, but in N Line S guise and the seats were immediately more comfortable being alcantara/microfibre however, I don’t think the seats in Hyundai are as comfortable as the MG HS (PHEV) a neighbour has recently had!
I would recommend an extended test drive before making any decisions.
October 10, 2025 at 5:59 pm #315345Thanks for that. I actually have an MG HS at the moment and regularly do 340 mile round trips in a day with not even a twinge of discomfort. It’s like an armchair!

Covering that distance in the real world, you would have to stop off and add some juice in the Ionic 5 on the return journey, so if you went that way a charging subscription packageto lower kWh the cost, would be worth looking into. I wouldn’t entertain PHEV, unless you did similar mileage to your trips locally. The new HS would be like having a different car inside and out, due to the facelift and there’s currently some cracking offers on the HS in @BigDave ‘s offers thread. @ajn has just had the HS Hybrid Trophy and the dealer bettered any offer and gave it him for nowt down!!
Certainly alot to think about!
October 10, 2025 at 8:14 pm #315350@kezo you mention the comfort of the MG seats, they as mentioned are arm chair soft…
I really am loving the comfort and softer ride of this MG over the Volvo, lots have said to me oh you’ve changed from Volvo, surely its a better car over this..
🤔 I can’t agree with them, I’m loving the space, comfort and softer ride…
I’m defo getting old..also had the gcb through too..

Peronally, I don’t think Volvo, is as premium, as some make them out to be. Besides Volvo hasn’t been Volvo since Ford aquired them in 1999 and of course now under Geely and unlike Saab, the brand survived in europe.
The latest HS is one of the better looking cars imo and like someother Chinese brands, they’re beging to give european auto manufacturers a kick up the but! MG does still operate in Longbridge, but MG headquarters and main design studio is in Marylebone London and were respnsible for the Cybster design and like all MG’s today are manufactured by Saic in China. The new HS is basically a Roewe RX5, with european flair and suspension tuned to better suit our roads partly down to London studio, oh and of course bing bongs and who cares what others think😂

Very much depends on how you define “premium”.
Prior: SEAT Ateca Xcellence Lux 1.5 TSI DSG MY19, VW Golf GTE PHEV DSG MY23
Current: Hyundai Ioniq 6 Ultimate
Next: we'll see what's available in 2028.October 11, 2025 at 7:40 am #315364It’s nice to see people talking up the HS for once. They get so much bad press and to me, non of it is warranted. It’s a genuinely superb car and for an incredible price.
However, after three years of ownership, I really fancy something different and the Ioniq really appeals to me, hence the test!

October 11, 2025 at 7:54 am #315365Totally agree Dougie, unwarranted put downs, early days at the mo granted, but this car, well I’m loving it..
Im sure I’ve noticed you pointing things out on other sites also..
The space, comfort, style of the MG I love it, I saw one in a parking bay, came home looked it up, test drove, ordered and picked up in record time, absolute bargin, Big Dave deal saving the day was the cherry on the top..

October 11, 2025 at 9:58 am #315373Cracking car and they look great in black, which is why I currently have one! If I did buy another, it’d be red though.
I must say, having had a look at the IM6, if that came on the scheme, I’m sold!

October 11, 2025 at 10:21 am #315376Very much depends on how you define “premium”.
That would make a very good topic/debate on it’s own!
As for Volvo, whilst, always safety orientated, Volvo only started to transform into what is now “defined”, as a premium brand during the mid 2015’s, during Geely’s push to upmarket Volvo and enter it into the premium segment, to try strenghen it’s position in the premium market and increase brand perception.
As for another (once) Swedish brand, I often wonder where Saab would be today, if it had got into the right hands!
However, I think alot will change in the not so distant futue, where the automotive market is concerned, as both mainstream and premium european brands are either at a stand still or going backwards and you only have to look at VW for the latter.
Indeed @Rene a very good afternoon topic, I think!

Something tells me, you wouldn’t be alone with that!
As my previous comment, europe is going to get a big wake up call very soon!
October 11, 2025 at 1:49 pm #315390The Ioniq5 has 2 types of seat. The standard one is OK but the relaxation seats are a class above.
Both my wife and I have different back problems we have tried a bunch of cars including the Ioniq6 with the lower grade seats and the Relaxation seats really were the most suitable, closely followed by the Mach E seats.
I'm Autistic, if I say something you find offensive, please let me know, I can guarantee it was unintentional.
I'll try to give my honest opinion but am always open to learning.Mark
October 11, 2025 at 6:05 pm #315404I’ve been following this with interest as the Ionic 5 will probably be my next car. Are the relaxation seats the ones that almost fold flat?
October 11, 2025 at 7:48 pm #315408Yes, we have them on our Namsan, superb
October 11, 2025 at 10:44 pm #315419We have had our Ioniq 5 ultimate since March this year, and it’s been amazing.
We’ve done quite a few long trips, including Surrey to Northumberland which is 330 miles. We have done this many times, but even after 8 hours in the car (with stops of course), neither of us had any back issues or discomfort at all.
The seats have electric lumber support, plus they’re ventilated too, which was superb over the summer.
re the relaxation seats – from doing my testing and research, I think they’re the same as the ones in the Ultimate, except they fold flat and have the calf rest. The rest of the seat is the same (apart from memory addition of course).
It’s a superb car – quiet, refined, comfy and great fast charging speed.
