I’ve noticed we have more posts relating to electricity tariffs and setting up of EV home charging procedures and was wondering if there was enough interest to set up a permanent sticky.
There is a fair amount of money to be saved charging from home and getting the correct tariff could save more.
I don’t really have much expertise in the topic but I’ve noticed there are those who’ve been using a number of tariffs and actually change tarrif between summer and winter so there must be money to be saved for members to go to the bother.

What size of home battery and solar array do you have Stuart? @Kezo maybe time to get a home battery? these events will happen more often once the upgrade of electricity cables from Scotland to England are completed passing all our cheap wind power down to you southerners, your welcome lol
We’ve got a 9.5kwh battery with 16 415w panels (8 on the east side of the roof and 8 on the west side)
Cheers, from down south!
August 20, 2024 at 8:16 pm #287184@Stuart the typical electricity use, not counting charging a car, is 10kwh per day so your battery will, mostly, cover that.
Your solar output will be roughly 16 x 415w = 8240kwh however you will not get this you are more likely to get, let’s say 6,000 kWh. With Octopus you would get 6000 x 15p = £900 per year.
Assuming your electricity use is 10kwh per day then that equates to 3650 kWh per year so 3650 x 7p = £255.
So ignoring your car use you would be, roughly, £645 in credit for the year.
Changing time of use of your big ticket items such as dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer to the cheap rate times, normally midnight to 4am, will reduce your daily consumption use of your battery to below 10kwh. Any spare power in your battery at the end of the day can be sold back to octopus 🐙 for 15p so you’ve bought it for 7p and selling it back for 15p. This may not seem a lot but if you have say 2kwh left in your battery at the end of each day and sell it back that equates to 2kwh x 365 x 15p = £110 year, not massive but better in your pocket than there’s lol
If anyone notices a problem with my math please point it out, no offence will be taken.

We are due to pick our next car in the next couple of months and are thinking of going electric.
A few questions on ev home charging installation:
What is the max distance the cable can be installed and classed as standard installation. Our electric box is located under the stairs so the distance to the outdoors would be about 3 metres. The length required in the back garden would be about 10 metres.
Also would a trench need to be dug under the gravel by a fence for installation, would this be an extra charge, or could I do this part?
Our electricity supplier is eon so not sure if we need to switch.
Many thanks in advance
Regards Mark

A non standard install would be triggered if:
What is a non-standard installation?
It’s a home chargepoint installation where more work is needed. You might need a non-standard installation if:
Your parking space is not directly next to your home
Your charging unit needs to be mounted on something other than your home, like a post. Your home chargepoint can only be installed on a permanent structure
The cable route from your meter or unit is longer than 15 metres
The chargepoint provider needs to drill through more than one wall for the cable route
Your electrical equipment needs to be upgraded
You’ll have to pay extra if you need one of these.A photograph showing the outside wall of your house in relation to where you would want your charger/driveway. However, opting for the Ohme E-Pod, fixed to the house with the 8m cable option might be an option, as you could purchase a 10m charging cable elsewhere if neccessary, to reach the car, providing Ohme will allow you to do that or whether they would want/ insist you to go for a non standard install.
August 29, 2024 at 11:58 am #287613My installer was happy enough to fit the E-Pod on the wall and leave the cabling to the car up to me. Good job as he didn’t bring a cable with him!. Luckily Ohme eventually sent an 8m and it does the job, had I known that in the first place I would have got the Home-Pro with the locking cable.
@Kezo, I got a reply from the council 10 days ago about the KerboCharge coming out of the path, they’ve passed it onto another department who’ll let me know!.Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

imo the channel they cut should have being 2x that of the Kerbocharge either side and tarmaced in, rather than using plain cement…
August 29, 2024 at 2:35 pm #287620@Kezo Exactly what I thought, the concrete obviously hasn’t adhered to the plastic.
Looking on the Kerbocharge website the ones there all appear to have been put in with tarmac.

August 29, 2024 at 3:10 pm #287622@Phaedra I’d imagine the council won’t rush to sort it 😂
Octopus took first DD on the 27th, as agreed. Its left my bank however, Octopus show it as pending and not included in my credit balance. Are they slow with payments etc?
August 29, 2024 at 3:12 pm #287623Yes, takes a couple of days or three 🙂

@Brydo, in case you’re interested, I’ve just signed up to Octopus!I like the thought of being able to run the house and car at cheap rate all year a good one. Being able to charge the battery overnight was the clincher – I’m thinking about the dark, wet, short days in winter.
Cheers, for the heads up.
September 4, 2024 at 11:59 am #28788695% of household energy use should be at peak rate, especially when using white goods unless you are staying awake untill after the washer, tumble dryer dishwasher etc has finished or at least ensure there is a combined heat and smoke alarm near to your appliances.
Remember, If you’re asleep when a fire starts in your home, it can be far more dangerous than if you are awake and able to quickly react!
September 4, 2024 at 8:04 pm #287917Stuart great news 👍
Kezo you talking about death again. Mrs Kezo must love your positive outlook on life. 😂

September 4, 2024 at 11:14 pm #287928I understand Kezo but how many people are killed each year from appliance fires?
After saying that my grans brother died in a fire, it wasn’t an appliance fire though he fell asleep while smoking. 😞

Anything i post over three lines long please assume it is an article lol.September 4, 2024 at 11:52 pm #287931Statistically Cooking fires are the leading cause of house fires, followed by other appliance fires…
It’s more a tale of caution, to ensure fluff is cleaned from the drier and ensuring your white goods are in good working order, rather than the lord of death will come to get you 😂
Finishing on a serious note you can find helpful advice on you local fire brigades website, including a free smoke alarm if you need.

The more I can do from the mains the more I can sell back to the grid during the day from my battery.

I’m still learning about solar and storage, I’m just trying to work out what is best for us – we’re all different. 😎 My old man is Scottish and he thinks of himself as “careful with money” 😁

Pedant alert! We don’t run the dishwasher and/or the washing machine overnight 😉😁
September 5, 2024 at 11:16 am #287959Stuart, so your 50% Scottish I knew I liked you, well half of you 😂
Yes the electricity business is in real flux just now with major changes to supply, infrastructure and how it is produced. Electricity from Wind farms is unpredictable and will therefore mean that there will be times of electricity abundance and times of scarcity. Battery storage gives the opportunity to help level out the grid but it also gives opportunities to make money. Reducing your daily use from your battery leaves you with excess energy to sell back at a profit. It’s crazy but will encourage more uptake in battery storage.
