There is a lot of knowledge amongst us, I exclude myself.
The COVID 19 is dominating the news:
How worried should we be?
Will this be Spanish flu proportions or just another contained outbreak as SARS and MERS were?
Oh – and when will we start to see ‘Just in time’ manufacturing suffer?

My son and daughter in law have taken the decision to keep their four children home from school and self educate them until Covid 19 is no longer a dire threat. They question “why if it isn’t safe to go to the doctor’s surgery and public places with more than a few people present is it still alright to go to a crowded school for six hours a day, five days a week?”
Schools are clearly being kept open to provide a nation wide ‘baby sitting’ service to protect the economy’s workforce availability for as long as possible.
Children can and have contracted Coronavirus although it’s effects should in most cases be minimal, but what about their parents and grandparents? Is a few more days of protecting the economy more important than possible life and death matters? I don’t think so Mr Johnson and co.

March 17, 2020 at 3:58 pm #109542For those that are eligible but don’t have one, with so many places going to be unaccessible this may worth considering with hygiene and accessibility in mind.

I took my kids out on Monday but rather than feel that it’s a babysitting service I think the government want our children to become infected so as to pass the disease onto their parents and grand parents, to initiate the herd immunity they’re talking about they need to infect 60% of the population and what better way than to turn our kids into carriers, my kids school are already making homework packs as they expect to be closed by the end of the weekMarch 17, 2020 at 11:07 pm #109565
PhiljbTwo of my daughters are teachers and they aren’t making up teaching packs just the normal class work.
I think we all need to wait and see what the advice is over the coming week.March 18, 2020 at 1:13 am #109570Let’s as a group stick to facts and from professionals not those of Facebook and alike, this is a serious situation for our nation and for ourselves as a group, the children/fit and healthy are not deemed a high risk (unless underlying Heath risks) and I’m sorry to say it’s the stubborn old buggers that will not listen will be the ones keeping this going on, although a small town up the road from me within a 5 mile radius since Sunday there will be 5 bingo nights held this week in various places, not one of them has cancelled and Sunday and last night saw no decline in numbers, yet over 80% are over 70, I am concerned by how many people are not taking this seriously, it’s not a conspiracy trying to kill people off etc, it’s about having the resources to cope with the unknown and keeping us safe and alive, the sooner we all do our bit the more lives will be saved, no it’s not 1939 but we are under attack and we can all do our bit to make a difference and bring an end to this, the weak/vulnerable and elderly are more exceptable to catching this, staying safe and more secluded is on the whole not a lot to ask and something we can all do our bit for.
hopefully it doesn’t sound condescending but all I’ve heard over the last couple of days is “well I’m not staying in, it’s a lot of nonsense” from the very people that could make the change and make a difference.
please keep safe everyone this is just the start.

March 18, 2020 at 12:27 pm #109592From the BBC:
Car dealership Pendragon has seen its shares slump to their lowest level in nearly 11 years.
Shares in the group – which owns brands including Evans Halshaw and Stratstone – plunged as much as 33% this morning, but are now down 15.10% at 5.13p.
The reason? It posted an annual loss and warned the coronavirus outbreak is set to see customers stay away from showrooms.
Pendragon swung to an upre-tax loss of £16.4m in 2019, against profits of £47.8m the previous year.
It said: “As the virus spreads across the UK, then this will likely influence the willingness of customers to visit our dealerships, which could affect our financial performance.”

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has suspended production at the company’s Goodwood-based manufacturing plant from Monday 23 March for two weeks.
The company said: “In order to further secure the health and welfare of the employees of the company this suspension will be followed by an already-planned two-week Easter maintenance shutdown.
“This action has not been taken lightly, but the health and well-being of our exceptional workforce is first and foremost in our minds,” said boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

It is a tough time for both manufacturers and car dealers at the moment, notwithstanding the effects of Coronavirus.
Will they either work harder for our custom (i.e. more discounts/offers) to stimulate business or will they batten down the hatches and put prices up so that each vehicle makes more profit? It is a fine line in business between the two and if they get it wrong……………….

Clipped wingsHi JS,
agree that stubborn oldies will have to rapidly adapt but my youngest daughter is a primary teacher in london who whatsapped at lunch time to say there were barking coughs in her class and they are now forced child minders for working mums due to governments failure to do the right thing. Stable door closed, horse already bolted. Story of the last two months and we all pay the price. Older daughter has a delightful toddler that we can no longer visit and is pregnant..as a pilot we used the philosophy of Avoid, Trap, Mitigate threats/ mistakes. Complacency and ineptitude missed the avoid and attempted trap is at least two weeks too late. Mitigate was the absurdly callous “ herd immunity” policy of last week that generated condemnation and dismay, which has resulted in abrupt back peddling. If they had spent a tiny fraction of the 350 billion on checking visitors from hotspots and our tourists from their skiing holidays in Italy then I suspect the current dire situation could have been delayed making Trapping feasible. Chinese and Italian doctors are horrified at our response.

BrydoBrydo junior arrived back from his holiday in Phoenix. All BA flights from Phoenix were cancelled but they routed him through Dallas to London and then to Glasgow airport this morning.
He is now on two week lock down as he was at a festival in LA that many had the virus. His work don’t want him back until he has seen out the two weeks with no symptoms.
Mrs Brydo has been unwell recently so he is confined to his bedroom for most of the time.
This will be a tough time for the three of us. Hopefully he is virus free but only time will tell.March 18, 2020 at 2:59 pm #109602
brydoSchools in Scotland and Wales to be closed by Friday.
March 18, 2020 at 3:23 pm #109603I’m pleased for you that he’s arrived home safely Brydo. As you say it’s going to be tough getting through his self isolation, especially with your wife being unwell.
‘One day at a time’, is probably the best way to get through it and out the other side. My best wishes to the three of you.
March 18, 2020 at 3:52 pm #109606Schools in England are set to follow soon after, although my daughters in two different schools in Surrey haven’t yet been asked to make up any homework packs.
March 18, 2020 at 3:59 pm #109607
brydoThanks Pops he is fast asleep, catching up from his excesses, and quite happy, at this point, to be doing nothing.
My worry is for my wife not sure how she would do if she caught the virus.
March 18, 2020 at 4:56 pm #109610
Clipped wingsHi Brydo, glad my former colleagues got him home safely. My wife and I are both high risk and been generally self isolating for 10 days before the compulsory mandate starts on Sunday. It is going to be much more onerous for my daughter due pregnancy and coping with a lively toddler who loves going to the park.
shortly after 9/11 I flew a near empty plane to Dallas. The only first class pax was a certain M Thatcher. We had a long chat I’m convinced that her proactive, perceptive, decisive nature who have resulted in taking the tough decisions in a more timely manner. We are where we are and hope your wife recovers soon. Good luck to all and stay wellMarch 18, 2020 at 5:29 pm #109611
brydoThanks clipped wings, my son was an mechanic for BA for seven years but that didn’t get him any favours on his return flight lol.
Now Margaret Thatcher, that’s a name from the past, decisive she most certainly was.
My wife is certainly in the vulnerable category so there is a lot of worry on my part about her. The quicker this virus disappears the better, for all our sakes.

March 19, 2020 at 7:24 am #109621Morning all I hope everyone is virus free. I was wondering who is taking the advice on board and is working from home I know lots of people can’t, rumours are spreading that London is going to see soldiers on the streets because so many people are ignoring advice.

for the last month they have been posting stuff to me instead and yesterday the company that runs their shred office space shut up shop and told everyone to leave as they couldnt staff the reception etc and mail etc would be able to be colected from one of their other sites that was remaining open.
so everyone is now operating from home.
