There is a lot of knowledge amongst us, I exclude myself.
The COVID 19 is dominating the news:
How worried should we be?
Will this be Spanish flu proportions or just another contained outbreak as SARS and MERS were?
Oh – and when will we start to see ‘Just in time’ manufacturing suffer?

mikehi.
I have just had my holiday cancelled to fuertaventura at the end of the month. the thing with the outbreak and how its handled are
1. how do they know exact numbers if people are told not to dial 111.
2. they say there is strain on the care system & people will be shipped from hospital to a care home or indeed home.
3. What is happening to domicialliary care. My partner is a registered manager for theis sector, they have familymembers in self isolation. I have a lifelong medical condition which is immune system based. where is the testing of these staff? who picks up the care if they cant?
March 15, 2020 at 7:17 pm #109413Copy of an email just received by me & a bunch of friends, from the local Dentist , OTT OR NOT. – I wonder?
I have to say it’s all rather worrying and an absolute first in our lifetime and interesting how people react in different ways.
I went out to dinner with 5 others on Friday, wore gloves, for which I was mocked and even wore them to eat. But the difficult thing was not touching my face which is such a natural thing to do, but I have to say the wearing of gloves partly discourages it.
I don’t think so far the powers that be have quite got the message across.
Washing hands is essential when you are anywhere near contamination, ie outside your home. ( One has to assume that your home is not infected otherwise one’s doomed ! )
But having washed your hands with soap for a full 20 minutes ( and all reports seem to forget the underneath of our nails) then DO NOT TOUCH YOU FACE after washing your hands.
These horrible little bugs Covid-19 can only get into our bodies through our eyes, nose or mouth so don’t push your glasses up, don’t flick a bit of hair from your eye, don’t scratch that itch. DON’T !
Lets consider shopping.
I personally wear gloves in the shop and assume my hands are clean inside the glove.
When you get to the checkout, how do you pay????
Your gloves by now are contaminated by the things you’ve touched in the shop.
So you could make a run for it but that’s a bit risky especially if like me you can’t run
OR
take your glove offreach inside your pocket ( having placed your phone in the correct pocket before you left home )mk
pay for your groceries with your phone and replace it in your pocket and put your glove on again ( your phone didn’t touch anything, contact pay means 2 cm but not touching) also taking your glove off and back on takes a bit of thought and practice but it’s doable….and important.
When you get home how you unpack your contaminated packets is tricky but doable.
Throw away the wrappings, ie the parts of your purchase that have been touched by anyone.
In theory back in the safety of your home you can now touch anything.
All this is better than staying in your home for 4 + months.
Oh! Keep your distance from people when you are out and about and especially in the shop.
I’m sorry to labour the point but the hand washing message I feel it not sufficiently thorough.
You by now probably think I’m bonkers.

CarlIts getting very scary and real.
I’m glad the government have taken a stronger stance on this virus rather than the ‘head in sand’ approach!!
March 16, 2020 at 8:43 pm #109479It does seem likely we are going to follow mainland Europe and have a shutdown. A few restaurants have already announced they will be closing. I would not be surprised to see a 30 day period of self isolation for almost everyone.
Strange thing was yesterday in my brief visit to our local Tesco express a few locals were dismissing all the news reports and saying it was business as usual and looking forward to their Easter trip to Spain!
March 16, 2020 at 10:27 pm #109485Two of my sons friends are showing symptoms and are now self isolating for two weeks.
The only person who got all his work done by Friday was Robinson Crusoe.

March 17, 2020 at 7:58 am #109500The bbc has said advice will be given within the next week for everyone who received a free flu jab due health.
The gov Dr said by way of a letter from the NHS so at least we can ignore all the fake or confusing advice out there.

BrydoI was out yesterday and life is going on as normal. The park was really busy, but I kept away from everyone, and the shops were just as before, without any toilet ? paper though.
Mitch your not alone you’ve got us on the forum ?
March 17, 2020 at 9:58 am #109512Yesterday we were in Boots chemist an elderly man was asking for toilets roll, he was pleading I only need one. I told the wife can we give him the one we had in the car, the wife followed him out, across the road there was shop with toilet rolls, the wife picked up a 9 roll pack and shout him across.
We have just had a text from New Cross Hospital I have a eye test on Sunday ? first we heard of it, if we cancel we will be signed off. They have had 2 deaths at New Cross, we cancelled.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

OlpkThe WHO director says ALL persons showing symptoms should be tested otherwise we dont know how big the battle is.
Our government says testing everyone is too expensive.
Ring 111 and unless your serious your told to isolate.
We are running blind.
On a seperate note cross border car deliveries are not going to be seen as essential travel.

The reason I have cancelled, (a) We have not had a letter so no idea were to go New Cross is a big hospital, (b) They cannot tell us what they are going to put drops in my eyes etc, if that is the case it is short notice to arrange a lift if I cannot drive (c) I am in the high risk group with scarring to the lungs, diabetes and problems with my liver and (d) the optician only found a minor bleed spot on my eye, she told it is not urgent but would write to our GP plus the main point (e) 2 people have already contracted the virus and died at New Cross.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
March 17, 2020 at 10:43 am #109519I normally meet a dear friend in Wetherspoons tomorrow lunchtime it’s not crowded but I think it’s too risky ?
March 17, 2020 at 10:49 am #109521We were going away in April, we have now cancelled.

March 17, 2020 at 11:11 am #109522Wonder if anyone going abroad in July will be safe to go ? Will it be over by then ?
March 17, 2020 at 11:16 am #109523My daughter was at the pharmacy today to pick up her meds and said it looks like a normal day. Next phase will be a total shutdown as the government say that people are not following guidelines, probably announced before the weekend and taking affect within the next 7 days. A friend who works in the travel industry has said travel overseas before the autumn is almost certainly a no.

BluecloudUKThe UK Government’s plan has always been to stretch this out for a minimum of 3 months.
It has nothing to do with ensuring the health of the public is protected.
One of the first things BoJo said in his little speech yesterday was that the Government was committed to ensuring economic growth.
Best case scenario is that only 20% of the public will contract the virus. That will bring the UK economy to its knees. If absenteeism can be kept below 10%, we might just break even.
China went in to lockdown relatively quickly and took the financial hit. We don’t have the resources to do that.
