There is a lot of knowledge amongst us, I exclude myself.
The COVID 19 is dominating the news:
How worried should we be?
Will this be Spanish flu proportions or just another contained outbreak as SARS and MERS were?
Oh – and when will we start to see ‘Just in time’ manufacturing suffer?

DafHi Brydo one of the lads I work with has just been told he will have his first dose of the “Oxford” vaccine on 4th Jan. Unlike the Pfizer which is administered in 2 equal doses 28 days apart the Oxford first dose is much larger than the second which is given 3 months later.

BrydoThanks for that info Daf, good to know.
December 30, 2020 at 2:05 pm #133863MHRA/JCVI estimate that one dose of Oxford-AZ vaccine will give around 70% protection from 3 weeks after immunisation until second dose at 12 weeks

DafNo one who contracted the Oxford vaccine went on to develop the serious version of Covid and that’s a good enough reason for me to welcome the protection offered by this vaccine.
As far as lockdowns not working that is factually incorrect. Wuhan province was the first area to use lockdown as part of their anti covid arsenal, closely followed by New Zealand. The fact is that the UK like others did not react quickly or decisively enough to a frightening pandemic which given the opportunity can decimate the best of health care systems.
That is why peddling half baked theories and trying to downplay the dangers posed by this pandemic is quite simply playing with fire. Of course for those convinced that Covid is nothing more than a conspiracy then perhaps they could prove their case by volunteering to work at their local hospitals ICU or Covid ward.

BrydoThe blessed Nikola has told us that all over fifties in Scotland will be vaccinated by March ?????
December 31, 2020 at 7:14 am #133935That’s good to know, Brydo, especially as she has such an unblemished record of keeping her promises…

BrydoWigwam it must be really unhealthy being so cynacol all the time and, unless that’s just the way you are wired, very hard work.

December 31, 2020 at 4:03 pm #134008I’ll save you all the time, this latest crackpot states:
‘this so-called second wave COVID19 is of no greater an issue than a moderately bad flu season’
Tell that to Prof Hugh Montgomery:

BrydoFirst person I know personally, in the UK, who has had the jab is a doctor in our extended family. Seemingly they were given a telephone number to contact if they wanted it. Only side effect, a bit of a sore arm for a few days.
My cousin in Dubai got vaccinated a few weeks back can’t remember if it was the Russian or Chinese jab he got.

DragonflyMy Qashqai is just over a year old, it goes in for its first service tomorrow, due Covid it’s only just done 3,000 miles.??
January 3, 2021 at 6:53 pm #134517I feel we shall soon see lock down three and all schools closed very soon. If the NHS can vaccinate sufficient numbers restrictions may start to ease in early spring but I feel it will be the summer before we see a significant easing of restrictions.

Agree, harsher rules imminent, the public are calling for them. It’s the tail wagging the dog.
If this guide is correct, most of 2021 will be challenging;
January 3, 2021 at 7:55 pm #134526Where is the evidence the public are calling for harsher rules? Everyone I meet thinks it’s all gone to far.

Sorry, should have said ‘from what I can gather the public are calling for….’

jamesgJust one question how do they expect to roll out the second dose of the vaccine. Three months to roll out the first dose three months for second dose . My thinking is that we will only get one dose ?

I totally agree

January 4, 2021 at 12:26 pm #134630This is an interesting point, after months of painstaking trials, suddenly, the criteria could be changed.
January 4, 2021 at 12:52 pm #134634The single dose vaccine thinking would likely work for the under 65s as per the phase II & phase III trial results. The booster dose vaccine thinking is because in older people the immune system isn’t so strong & the “reminder” helps to develop a stronger response. However, there were few over 65s in these trials, the current roll out of the vaccines is in effect an extension of those trials & a proportion of recipients can be tested to see what the longer term responses are, bear in mind that the approval was an emergency measure once the main safety checks were completed.
This is an argument that will run & run when the best solution is likely some combination of the two approaches.
I’d expect single dose vaccination for the under 50s to be a thing once the roll-outs get to that stage.
January 4, 2021 at 1:12 pm #134638I have a look at the calculator I am not 65 until August based on 1,000,000 doses per week @70% take up based on 2 vaccines late September/October 2021, so in theory I will not receive my first vaccine until late June/July
