July 24, 2025 at 8:04 am in reply to: Travelling in a car very uncomfortable after a hip operation. #310211The Mobility lease is in my name, the wife has suffered lower back pain plus a broken ankle repaired with plates and pins, as regards the GP they are less than useless, you can only book online, it takes 5 to 6 weeks to see a GP, when you finally get an appointment is is either a locus or a paramedic to add insult to injury despite having 8 GP registered on site the surgery is always virtually empty.

I think that those who think that this will result in better deals for Motability customers will be disappointed. Motability Operations will have already negotiated discounts on EVs that are many times the value of this grant for private buyers, so I can’t see it making any difference whatsoever.
My understanding some of the Chinese companies have now reduced their list prices to match the Government grants

It’s full of plans, maybe and could be… Given it said to be starting July 2025, there is no official news on gov.uk orDVLA and nowt on TV suggesting any such change! https://horizonhealthcare.co.uk/2025/07/15/new-uk-senior-driving-rule-what-seniors-caregivers-need-to-know/#:~:text=Currently%2C%20drivers%20aged%2070%2B%20renew%20their%20licence%20every,could%20be%20needed%20for%20those%20identified%20as%20high-risk.
Hi Kezo that gives some clarity.

When I turned 70 I had to renew my driving licence – this repeats every 3 years. Essentially you have to declare you are fit to drive – the emphasis being on you to declare any medical condition that might make you unfit to drive. So if you have an accident and you haven’t declared any reasons you shouldn’t be driving – your in trouble. As far as I know if there are any grey areas then you should get yourself assessed. Not heard of any upcoming agreed changes to this.
I have previously furnished DVLA Medical with my medical records after a phone assessment they confirmed in I am fit to drive, I am not 70 until August 2026.
I cannot find anything on DVLA site to support the above.

Would extending the EV leases to 5 years smooth out the losses ?

I did ask motability and they said they recommend getting work done through insurance claim but that it was up to me if I wanted to get it fixed outside of this.
ok, the professionals don’t use a brush, they use the fine tip of a piece of rolled up newspaper, I have tried it several years ago it work fine, if it metallic don’t forget the lacquer coat otherwise the repair will be flat.

@Oscarmax, what do you mean Motability won’t be happy!? He’s not contemplating spraying the whole car a different colour!!! And I’m sure Motability don’t need to be contacted to get their permission just to touch up a few unsightly stone chips!
It is really up to you if you chose to go ahead, it is Mobility’s vehicle it always pays to ask.

Hi, I have a Hyundai on the motability scheme and recently had a few paint chips that were bothering me, so got a basic touch up done as I couldn’t afford a big job. It means you can still see where the paint has been touched up and I’m just wondering whether this will pass inspection (it’s not due to go back until 2027 but worrying already!) or if I should get it properly fixed? I’m really anxious as I’ve never had a car on the scheme before so I appreciate any help.
What ever you do, do not attempt to touch up the stone chips, Mobility will not be happy, if you need verification talk to Mobility, it is part of wear and tear.

Given Monday nights experience of spending a total of 16 hours in urgent care/A&E etc. to get my Autistic son looked at while he was in a huge amount of pain I’d say the country was definetly going to the dogs. Police were in A&E 5 times with various idiots in handcuffs, all were seen and treated straight away while elderly, and obviously very unwell, people sat for over 12 hours to finally self-discharge as they were simply too worn out to sit any longer 🙁 My GP surgery has now changed to a 24/48hr first contact system, someone will ring you back to arrange an appointment which will be in 2 to 4 weeks time!
We struggle to make an appointment 6 to 8 weeks if you are lucky with the online appointment system, it was bad before Covid it is abysmal now. Once you get an appointment the GP is less than interested.

Mobility inform us to test drive and make sure the vehicle suit your needs, however, dealers seem to be offering test drive are becoming less common, this is something Mobility needs to sort out, if the dealer cannot not offer a comprehensive test drive they should be removed from the scheme.

Our Ford Kuga and Mitsubishi Outlander came with matts, our current vehicle Suzuki Across floor matts came as an extra, so I brought some genuine ex display one online, just my luck the Suzuki dealer supplied genuine Suzuki matt free of charge.
I have since brought some genuine Suzuki rubber matts and a boot liner expensive but much better than the standard carpet matts.

Was it a call centre in a far distant land also. I had to call them to find out information as I needed a new windscreen and they appointed Autoglass, who broke my cars adas camera unit fitting it. Then AG said my car is somehow unsafe to drive, without adas and also tried to say the insurance would be not liable if an accident occurred because no adas systems are active. Could they answer basic questions. No they couldn’t. I could hardly understand the persons broken English. They then put me threw to Autoglass who couldn’t help especially regarding if the insurance is still valid or not, with adas broken as AG has claimed on there behalf. I know for a fact that if there’s an issue the system disables itself and is just like a car without adas, are they all unsafe to drive. Infact you couldn’t make it up. RSA was 1000 times better. MB all they did was say contact Autoglass. This has been going on since 3rd of April my cars now at Volvo since the 28th of May and is now sitting there awaiting a whole new camera unit that’s on backorder, with no date as to when. So yeah I totally understand your ordeal with DL and there lack of actual knowledge of uk rules and regulations and they just robots following the guidelines that been set out. I need to speak to my supervisor for more information and then still cannot answer the simple questions asked.
They got to be better than DVLA both of us struggle to understand the women on the end of the phone.

In 2023 the FSA investigated DL it did not go well in DL favour, why Mobility signed up with DL is a mystery to me, such poor service diminishes one the advantages of being on the Mobility scheme.

Local VW test drive definite no, can I view or look no, Skoda any chance of a test drive no, can I just look inside no there is second hand car outside if you must, first Ford dealer test drive no unless I am ready to sign, Ford Bristol Street Motors here’s the keys bring it back in an hour or so. Our current Suzuki dealer nice enough guy did not have a car to test drive, but would have been welcome if they did, I went to another Suzuki dealer as a customer and test drove a second-hand Suzuki Across.
Unfortunately some Mobility sales staff have an attitude and leave a lot to be desired, fortunately the majority cannot do enough.

This is slowly getting more common no demonstrators or test drives ?

As Kezo points out, these LiFePo4 batteries require a higher voltage to charge, 14.6 volts against 13.6 in my case so using a regular battery charger I can only get 70% of charge without buying a new charger. Should your battery charge inside the scooter you could find a similar outcome, should it charge outside you will require a new charger I suspect.
I eventually chickened out and went for 2 x 22amp sealed batteries, I have not used my scooter for just over 5 years since my little dog past away, I am hoping using the scooter again will be a tempory hitch until my heath improves again.
And as we speak they have just arrived.

Our Local Suzuki dealer is now basically a satilite dealership where you can place an order only, they have no new vehicles on site and no demonstrators. The main depot is 30 miles away, we are seeing a lot of main dealership closing down. It all going online.

Done the driving assessment and will give a brief description for future searches as I presume they will be pretty much the same across the UK. There was an physio therapist and driving assessor. First was a cognitive test. I noticed they were all being timed, but it was explained that time was critical. I had a page with about 30 marks like this / I had to put a line through them all to make them into X. Straight forward enough. Next page contained a lot of numbers and letters and they were randomly spread out over an A4 sheet. I had to draw a line from 1-A, 2-B, 3-C etc. Easy at the start until a lot of random lines start to cover the page. I was made to go as far as 10-J when they said they were happy enough. Next was a page with a clock face and no hands and I was asked to mark the hands down as showing 11:45. Cringe as this is stuff I do for my childs homework. I noticed more pages of tests but the assessor and PT said they were happy enough and we’ll go to the driving assessment. I do believe that if you struggled on some of these tests they may have made you do more. I was asked if I’m using my own car or their *car* I explained my own. We done the eye test of reading a number plate then got into the car. PT in back and assessor in front. It was explained that’s it’s an assessment not a test and that we all pick up so called bad habits and as long as he believes they do not cause risks it’s ok. Things like crossing arms when turning and constantly checking mirrors. Through out the whole assessment the PT was watching and taking notes while the assessor kept an eye on me but was more clued in to the road ahead. Assessment would last 1 hour and take me through a mixture of roads and junctions. There was some very busy #junctions# which ment I had to go through 3 lanes of traffic to get to them. But it was just the basic take the next left/right etc. Just one instruction were he gave me 4 instructions to do without being reminded. It was ‘at the end of this road take a left and at the end of that road take a right. After 35 minutes he asked the PT was she happy and she said yeah, so he told me we will head back and finish up. He asked me did I know my way back and I said yes, so he told me to do it without instruction. Easy enough tbh. # I know some folk do not like busy multiple lanes and junctions and will avoid them. I don’t think you can get away without driving in or around them. * It was made very clear that it keep my manual license I have to do the assessment in a manual car. If I dive an automatic car they will provide me a manual car and give me time to get used to it. This was made very clear. When we got into my car the PT asked was it manual or auto, I said neither. To which the assessor explained that it has no gears. We spent a few minutes talking about the car as he really liked it. My license arrived back as it left, the old manual license with all the old categories which you now have to do separate tests for. I was only expecting an automatic only license. EV anomaly? Edit. He explained that he will be noting that he believes me to be a safe and experienced driver. That’s also why he cut the test short. Edit 2. I was also told to expect a 3 year license due to my conditions, but it’s the full 10 year driving license.
Well done fortunately I did not have driving reassessment Nuero gave me the all clear after 6 months. I can vaguely recall my intial nuero assessment according to the wife I virtual failed everything including the clock, the next time I passed that part of the assessment.

The Toyota RAV4/Suzuki Accross ICE unit uses the Atkinson Cycle (it has been designed to use even a lower grade of fuel than E10) rather than the more common Otto cycle, it design to simulate the original Atkinson engine, the Atkinson cycle opens the inlet valves much later than Otto cycle despite being a 2500cc it only draws 1600cc/1700cc on the inlet cycle, the exhaust cycle is a conventional Otto cycle thus giving a cleaner burn for the next cycle.
As a comparison our previous Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 2400cc ice unit use a variable valve timing using both the Atkinson and Otto cycle, using E10 as opposed E5 on that vehicle made a 2 mpg difference.
Excuse my grammar I have a brain injury.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.
The Suzuki is just over 21 months into it least, for the first 12 months or so we ran on E10 fuel, towing down to the New Forest 180 miles each way 360 miles weather good traffic good no major hold up on 3 occasions approximately 45 litre, the first outgoing journey 25 miles in EV so 360 – 25 =335 divide by 45 litres (9.9 gallons) =33.8 mpg.
Same journey in May this year conditions virtually identical using E5 petrol approximately 45 litres no difference but the price.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.
Nothing special just comparing 12 months on E10 and then 8 months on E5 we have note zero difference fuel consumption or smoothness except the price.

On the 15th June 2023 I was stopped at a red traffic light, a young woman with a baby rolled into the back of my vehicle, fortunately I had a rear camera, she covered her face and refused to speak, she had a young baby on board and according to the dash cam footage was messing with her dash mounted mobile, she just drove off.
I phoned Mobility’s insurance company the asked for any video recording, they were more interested to whether the baby was secured properly.
