I’d be quite happy to be given a once-every-3 yr tax discount that can be used to lease a vehicle from any leasing company. It would also make it clearer to the general public that we do pay for these leases. It would also mean that there would be competition, rather than Motability having a monopoly.
There’ll still be people not happy that we get a tax discount, but it’s better sounding than a totally free car that many think we get.
March 17, 2025 at 10:27 am in reply to: Means Testing My PIP Eligibility Would Mean Losing My Mobility #299591If it was to be means tested based on savings, there would likely be many in the same boat as me –
1. Payments stop.
2. Car handed back to Motability
3. Use all my savings to buy car
4. Now eligible for PIP
Saving the government no money, but causing lots of hassle.
@trb10 Lease Loco is a good comparison for leases. It handily gives a score for each deal which shows if the deal is good value (in their opinion).
Some of the best deals are in stock deals and there may only be 1 car available at that price. This could be a cancelled order, or needing to hit sales targets at end of month.
Most of the deals are listed as 2 year, 6,000 miles/year. But you can update the price by choosing different contract length, up front payment (obviously changing the upfront payment affects the monthly payment), mileage required.
Vehicle Tax is included in the price. The one thing I don’t know and hopefully someone on this forum can answer is – Considering Vehicle Tax is included, can we use our Disability Vehicle Tax exemption on lease cars and in turn, reduce the quoted prices. I can’t see why not and this could make the prices even more appealing.
I agree, Mark that Motability Operations don’t work exactly the same as other leasing companies. But, I’ve just had a look for something similar to my current car (current is Sportage, similar is X-Trail 1.5 E-Power 204 N-Connecta) and for my low mileage, it works out over £1k less per year to go private.
I would need to insure it for approx £450/yr, roadside assistance is probably included, otherwise £30/yr, and service it £350?/yr. I’d be about £200/yr better off, BUT I’d still choose Motability because although I have excellent credit score, that doesn’t usually matter when income from benefits is usually ignored.
I’m not saying Motability isn’t worth it, but just find some of the prices, considering my points above (mostly zero tax) imo should mean that other leasing companies shouldn’t be able to offer me a better price.
The thing that irks me about Motability prices is that no other lease should come close to Motability prices when you consider that they are the largest leasing company in Europe (will get the best discounts), purchase price is automatically 20% less due to zero tax and they are the only leasing company protected from inflation (except for any cars that don’t cost our whole Mobility allowance).
If you’re a low mileage and low insurance risk, there are often better deals if you privately lease. Obviously not everyone can lease due to credit checks. Then there is the pros and cons of private leasing if you lose your PIP entitlement. Great that the car isn’t taken away like with Motability, but very bad if you can’t keep up with repayments.
I also like that having Motability in your corner helps when things go wrong with your car.
March 13, 2025 at 4:00 pm in reply to: 10 things you need to know before you get an EV Charger installed #299352Thanks again Kezo,
For some reason I’d totally forgot about non tethered chargers. It certainly seems the best option for me, even though it’s frustrating that I’d have to fund my own charge point.
March 12, 2025 at 9:43 pm in reply to: 10 things you need to know before you get an EV Charger installed #299269Thanks Kezo and Jason23.
The main non-standard installation would be digging a trench for 18M of cable, that would need to connect to a charging podium/post. Our drive is 18m away from our consumer unit.
March 12, 2025 at 4:57 pm in reply to: 10 things you need to know before you get an EV Charger installed #299250I’m sure I could get a quote for myself and get a rough idea of how much the extras we require will cost.
But I don’t think it’s fair to get a quote, knowing I’ll not be using them for the install.
I have an uncle in a nursing home and he has a Motability vehicle. He can’t drive, so my Aunt uses the car to visit him, take him out, etc. She is no longer employed, so I guess this is why she’s allowed to use the vehicle.
March 11, 2025 at 7:20 pm in reply to: 10 things you need to know before you get an EV Charger installed #299197Not really keen on EVs, but with all the issues we’re having with our short journeys (clogged GPF), it makes sense.
I know our install wouldn’t be “standard” so would have to contribute to to costs. What I really need to know is, will Motability organise a survey before I order an EV?
I suspect that the extra costs will be to great for me and don’t want to order the car first, knowing that I’ll likely have to cancel it.

Yep, it’s a serious issue especially in winter and those doing shorter journeys. Do note though that it’s the petrol and MHEV petrol engines that suffer. For those with HEV or PHEV, you should be ok.
I cleared it at the beginning of last month and it’s clogged up again already. Looks like anther trip to the coast to clear it again.
“I was considering the M3 estate because of my assistance dog and the fact it was a great car to drive, especially compared to other estates on scheme. Yet even the dealer was saying it was too pricey (£7999) to make it practical. Glad they took it off the scheme though as it was tempting.”
£7999 for an M3 and the dealer said it was too pricey? That would be the best deal that Motability have ever done!
September 17, 2024 at 8:13 pm in reply to: Buying Vehicle at Lease End – Financial Ombudsman Decisions #288768Motability Operations don’t want to lose customers as the leases are very profitable. Obviously selling car to the customer at the end of the lease means it’s unlikely the customer will start a new lease.
I bought my Motability car mid-way through the lease. This was during a DLA – PIP review that resulted in me losing higher rate mobility. I was, therefore, no longer a potential customer. Not only was the price fair, but the grants team paid towards it (£1,000 I think).
Not had much look with Vertu KIA. They only stock Slime brand kit, rather than the OEM Continental kit that is easy to use and worked well.
Not only is the Slime kit fiddly (dismantle valve and then reassemble valve), the kits they stock can’t even be used on SUVs (only cars up to a limited wheel size).
Motability were useless. I had to either buy the correct kit out of pocket (couldn’t claim cost back), or follow their advice – call RAC.
I know a lot of people have had extremely long waits for RAC. Ideally I’d have a spare wheel, but being a MHEV, the extra battery is in the spare wheel area.
V8Bart Can you use Android Auto/Apple Car Play?
I know many prefer the ease of using in-built SatNav, especially if you are on pay-as-you-go, or a limited data allowance, but maybe worth trying if you have a decent amount of data on your phone plan.
I’m not sure about other manufacturers, but KIA seem to have long waits to get faulty cars looked at and even longer waits to get them repaired. I think this is a KIA issue rather than dealership issue as I’ve read of delays numerous times.
I’d be fairly confident with leasing the HEV, but would avoid the MHEV unless you do frequent, long motorway journeys. My MHEV’s PPF get clogged up around every 1,000miles and mpg is extremely poor on shorter journeys.
When I left Motability in 2019, LV accepted the Motability history (Royal & Sun Alliance) as regular No Claims.
The link explains that AdBlue will be ” refilled by the dealer as part of your vehicle’s standard service”
The following makes it quite clear that you are expected to buy AdBlue at any other time that it is required –
“If you cover more miles, you may find that you need to refill the AdBlue tank more regularly.
If the warning light appears, you can top up the tank using AdBlue fluid which is widely available to purchase at petrol stations and motoring stores.
Always remember you can contact your dealer for advice on refilling AdBlue if you’re at all unsure.”The article was written in May 2018, so anyone getting free AdBlue outside of standard servicing for the last few years was lucky.
Just remember, Europe car often find imperfections on returned cars and bill the hirer. Although you will be insured through Motability, you will still be liable for the same excess as on your lease agreement.
Make sure to thoroughly check the hire car and immediately report the slightest imperfection, just as you would when hiring a car independently from the Motability scheme.
There will be plenty on here moaning about the poor mpg they are getting with that engine pulling a heavy car.
Not from me or Kezo with our ridiculous mpg on the non-hybrid Sportage/Tucson
I know you can add optional extras to Motability car orders, but how about paying for a trim level upgrade? The Msport is £1,500 more, but I’d guess that wouldn’t be allowed. In fact that £1,500 increas in price is probably why this car is on Motability. Very few retail/lease customers would choose the Sport with the Msport at such a slight increase in price.
So tempted to swap my Sportage for the Megane, but lack of memory seats really puts me off.
@Joss “It is not motabilities fault that KIA have stopped orders for the auto version, for the time being.”
How is it not Motability’s fault? Do you believe that if Motability offered a fair price to purchase the vehicles that KIA would refuse to supply them.
No doubt Motability’s excuse would be that they’d have to increase the APs if they paid more for the vehicles. That would be a fair point if they were running on a tight profit with little cash reserves.
For those lucky enough to get the full hybrid GTLS Sportage when it was available, that had this feature.
You can add the Tech Pack to a Hyundai Tucson for £1,500 which includes remote parking.
@kezo my main gripe was the fact that they’d happily pay for a full kit, that wasn’t suitable and which they didn’t even care about being returned. Oh, and the “use RAC”.
Yeah, I’ve seen the correct sealant for around £30, so not too bad.
I’d be tempted to sell the Slime kit to fund the purchase of the correct sealant, but I’m not that kind of person.
