I am a Spina Bifida Paraplegic, but on top of that I took a stroke and seizure in January of last year and was left unable to drive or transfer in and out of the car. I thought I was left with the only option of a wav, which I did not want, until a salesman pointed out that I could go for a in-car person hoist, which could be fitted to most non electric cars,
I ordered it with my new Motability car which cost me an extra £600, but if I had wanted the hoist fitted to any other car, it would cost £2,000.
For me it was the preferred d option and remembering that sadly your mother’s condition is only going to get worse, it might be an option worth looking at, if you can afford it, instead of a WAV or a swivel seat which might not work out well in the long tern.
The hoist works well apart from trouble with the cheap and tacky remote control. You do not need to use the remote control. The hoist builds up in three or four parts and can be kept in the boot when not in use.
Mitch, I was in the same situation, when I retired fully paid up two year ago and found out that I would not get the full state retirement pension of £203 a week but a state pension of £171 per week (nothing to do with tax or contribution’s), due to me being a civil servant and unknowingly opting out of my full state pension, without any option or knowledge that this was going to happen. My pal was the same and I assume most, if not all of my working colleagues.
I think that most people assume that paying into the new workplace pension will give them an extra pension. I fear that the Government will just see it as an excuse to lower the state pension.

As you would not be paying PIP Mobility to Motability, just watch the council do not count her pip mobility component as income or savings towards her care package charges.

See it is all to do with residual values, surely MB do not still expect customers to believe in that one.
I feel genuinely sorry for MB customers nowadays who see a car that fits their needs and who do their home work on the car, only to find it removed from the list when they go to order it, finding the car was only available for a few weeks or days even.
I ordered my new model Skoda Superb 2.0 diesel sel estate almost as it went on the list. Only a few weeks later it was gone with only the plug in version with the smaller boot available before it disappeared. It was the only car that ticked all the boxes of all my needs (not wants).
We need more large cars especially estates on the list and a more stable list. We used to be able to expect most cars to stay on the list for the whole three month, now we have no idea if they will be on the list for months, weeks or days even. Surely variety to meet our needs, stability and value are what the people at the top of MB are earning the big bucks for.
July 16, 2025 at 8:25 pm in reply to: Who remembers (or had) a Motability special from the old UK manufacturers? #309736Lee as someone who started with a blue invacar I forgot about the special edition Motability car’s. Although I did buy my Austin maestro with a Motability loan in 1984. You also got the Chrysler Sunbeam and Avenger on the list of the best deals.
Although I couldn’t get a sunbeam to lease as dealers had already taken their quota of MB cars and were worried that they would be saddled with too many coming back in three years time.

July 15, 2025 at 7:21 pm in reply to: Just ordered a Hyundai Ioniq 6 £250 off and a free V2L charger. #309647I ordered a Metalic red with grey interior in October 2023 with an AP of £4,500 ( – £750 NCD and – £900 as it should have been on GCB)(and thought that was a great value deal for a stunning looking car that came with everything that I needed, at that time. The car came in December and was being fitted with hand controls. Unfortunately in January 24 before I could pick it up , I took a bad stroke and a seizure, end of that plan. It took months for it to be cancelled by the garage and Motability.
But in June 24 the dealer Parks of East Kilbride phoned and offered me one or possibly my order for no AP, but unfortunately that shipped had sailed and no point asking which. But I would have loved the car. Great deal Brydo, enjoy your car.

Not had a problem myself however, I’m surprised you were to to go the Ombusman so soon. On a similar matter, when Motability removed the 2yr extended lease, they started applying the rules to members who were part way through a lease and were succesfully challenged by some members on here, stating new rules can’t be applied to existing leases, without the signing of a new contract. Hopefully you might find some information here to back up claim: https://www.motaclarity.co.uk/news/how-much-is-the-motability-good-condition-bonus
Thanks Kezo, for the info from October2022and 21 fight. My extension was from 2021, when it was £900 for 5 years.
Yes, I was also surprised by their attitude which has changed significantly over the last 40 odd years, which is now more like having a conversation with Little Britain, “where the computer say’s No” and they are only too happy to go from me explaining a historically backed complaint straight to directing and supply of a form for the Ombudsman as the next step with nothing in-between. I think I am more in need of the promised £300, than Motability Operations.
Do we have any evidence that Motability are actually going to put a total ban on people being able to extend their lease for an extra 2 year and if so when does it start.
I always have to pay a large AP to get a high spec car that meets my disability and can only afford that high AP if I am able to spread the cost over a five year period. I will not be happy if I find out after the 3 year that I cannot extend a car that has only done 9 thousand miles.
I wonder how much this is to do with them not being able to shift 5 year old EVs with batteries improving so fast.
I looked at the I5 but it was too high personally, for me to slide onto the seat and although it has a larger cubic capacity on paper, than the I6, it has a 10 cm shorter boot floor to hold the wheelchair and I am not sure how much practical use some of these cubic capacity measurements are as the extra space is of no great use to some who need a folding wheelchair put in the boot, as the 5 is quite a cut back hatch.
But things are definitely getting trickier for a lot of wheelchair users which the Motability principle was largely and originally built on to cater for, before expanding to more varied disabilities.
Motability needs to expand their range to cater for people’s very personal disability needs. There seems to be an attitude of some at Motability that If you are in a wheelchair and cannot get into or out of an SUV, then you should go for a WAV, which is not always the answer. There is a big need for the new Passat and Superb estates to be on the list.
PUG 3008 had to swap it after 9 months due to so many problems, all of them electrical.
I’ve been having problems with my Ariya electrics. At the moment it’s been 6 different issues with the last being in the workshop for nearly 3 weeks, but I think I’ll stick with it for now.
That is why I ended up going for mechanical hand controls instead of electric hand controls, as I (rightly or wrongly) thought, enough electrics to potentially go wrong in my new Ioniq 6 EV without adding more electronics.
Fortunately I have never had a car that I thought was a mistake and regretted, as I do my homework beforehand, although I have never had a test drive beforehand as it would need hand controls and I think it would be a different feeling from having a test drive as a passenger.
Although having said that, it is obviously down to luck if you get a Friday Afternoon car with loads of faults that you could not possibly have foreseen. Fortunately so far that has not happened to me in the 11 Motability cars that I have had, bought new (1) and leased (10).
That’s great Pops, they never asked me about getting the car treated inside and out with Autoglym, but I would have been interested and may ask the dealer about it, as I am not physically capable of taking care of the car beyond a car wash.
Carmad, I hope you love your new car and and I/we all look forward to getting feedback from you on how you like find it. I am expecting to get my Ioniq 66 in time for Christmas, as I have ordered my hand controls which should be in the start of next week and have registered my personalised number plate, just waiting on DVLA sending out the paperwork.
It looks very smart, have loads of fun with it.
Surely if two were not your fault, then you have effectively only had two claims against you, I do not mean that you do not declare the two claims that were not your fault, but I am assuming they must have been paid out by the other insurer and should not be held against you.
I actually like the screen placement and, if they were more common, would consider the cameras but living in a relatively poor town, I feel they could be liable to targeting from the feckless and jealous youths. That said, if I was offered a car that had them and given a decent deal on the camera price, I could be persuaded.
You can guarantee the the dickheads would consider them as a target! Asides the mirrors, Hyundai have a useful feature of being able to activate the reverse camera when driving. A fearure I use alot ?
Yes I agree, you can do it with my Kia Optima and when going on holiday and the estate was full to capacity, I used it as a centre rear mirror. I think the 360 camera is an excellent addition, especially if driving a hand controlled car.
Yup. Mark its a steep learning curve. Trying 2 charging points an failed miserably. The first one, you needed a card. Moved on to an instavolt…great it accepts swipe…done that then pulled out the charging pistol, it couldnt reach the port. I installed the app for the first charger, and it charged fine. 30 mins and charged it to 88%. Right next to a Starbucks…lol. It just keeps you on your toes, new technology…lol.
The energy firms and car manufacturers should fund day and night classes for people who have just got EV’s, thinking of getting an EV or just want to understand more about EV’s at this stage as a lot of people must be frightened off or at least put off by the complexity of the whole issue of EV’s and don’t know enough about the subject to take the plunge and go for one as their next car.
Also as we all know and have said, the infostructure in this country has to expand beyond what is currently needed to show people that they can take that step and buy an EV with the assurance that it will be able to cope with their current and future needs.
They cannot expect the people to go for EV’s with the knowledge that if enough of us get one then the infostructure will follow, it just won’t work, people have to see that the infostructure is here and now before most people will consider making that step onto EV’s.
December 9, 2023 at 12:44 pm in reply to: Motability grants and new vehicle payments – Deposits #251211I would argue that the £750 NCP is for everybody and can be taken off the AP then that would leave the AP at £1,350 which would mean that it is less than the 50% of the grant left to pay.
If you went for a car at £999 and took of the £750 then you are effectively only getting a £249 grant. Nobody should loose out on the £750 NCB as
it is a separate and one time only offer by Motability Operations where as the grant is payed by Motability the charity.
The good condition bonus is a totally separate issue as you will not know if you are even getting it until after the whole transaction is over.
I would put that argument to the grants people.
Great news Callmejohn ?
Cheers Kezo.
Hi Mike, No my driveway under my carport, is right next to my front door of my house.
The only problem is that Ohme have now asked if I can have the charger can be fitted right next to the electricity meter, but the other side of the house door and car, which i do not want the cable passing over the path to my door. They are saying that the cable will need to run and be fitted externally round my doorway externally, when I thought they could run it through my loft as we are only talking about five meters apart.
They also said that if it was situated at the electrical box, then there would be no extra charge (in a previous email), suggesting that if not, then there may be an extra charge although that was not suggested today on the phone.
Ohme said it would be some time in January before the charger would be fitted, which I can understand at this time of the year, with the festive holidays, although I do blame Ebeneezer for starting it all by giving Bob Cratchit Christmas Day off.
Pops I have seen the black interior and imho it does not look as impressive as the light grey interior which makes the car stand out, but obviously there are others who would not share my view. But as you say you are alone in the car for 90% of the time and no longer do a high milage, so keeping it looking new, won’t be a problem.
I have went for the Ultimate Metalic Red with the Light Grey interior, which the red will be very Christmassy for me getting it just before or around Christmas as it is in the garage next week.
Hi All, Just had a call from Ryan at Hyundai Parks, East Kilbride, to say my car should be in the showroom next week (ordered 4th October and original delivery date was April) and he will contact the hand control people to get the hand controls fitted. I asked about the £50 charging cost, but he said that was o.k. they would cover the cost of a full charge.
I was still trying to get the o.k. from Blackwood Homes for my charger to be fitted, after over 9 weeks. They were to get back to me today, but I had to end up phoning them yet again. But they have now o.k. it and will send me an email shortly to verify it, to forward on to Motability and Ohme (the next fun step).
So the only thing now is to arrange for the personalised number plates to be ready to change over, which will be the first time I have changed them to another car, I don’t mean physically as the garage will fit the new one with my personal number plate.
So was originally quite happy to get it in April, but it is what it is and I should just be chuffed to be getting a nice new (and momentarily, externally shiny and clean) car.
Gee you had certainly stopped your care before your post here on the 11th October.
I think that you should be pointing out to the Social Services that if they have been billed by the care company for care that you did not receive, then that is potential fraud and it is the care company that Social Services should be looking into, who must have been supplying them with time costs when they attended you.
Also that seems a heck of a charge by Social Services of roughly £158 pound per week towards your care package. I think I would be checking that one out as well.
I think the best way of Motability promoting EV’s is to reduce the AP’s, as I for one would never have considered a Hyundai Ioniq 6 Premium with a £8,000 AP. However it was a different kettle of fish when they added the dearer Ultimate model (with almost everything I needed other than it not being an estate) at a very reasonable £3,500, which suddenly became a consideration which I went on to order.
I think the more worrying thing, than emails and phone calls asking if we had considered an EV, is if Motability is pushing EV’s, then does that mean that there is less likely hood of them adding large petrol and diesel estates such as the new Passat and Superb estates which a lot of it’s customers with wheelchairs or scooters plus additional medical equipment, need.
Could it also encourage Motability to raise the AP’s on petrol and diesel cars that they don’t actually want us to choose, as there is no way we can ever tell how Motability Operations actually work out the AP’s.
