I thought I would make a thread on what caught you eye in the news good or bad. This follows on from last week when I posted about the MP Lee Anderson who suggested we could cook a meal from scratch for 30p and foodbanks weren’t needed if we could cook.
So today another Tory MP Racheal Maclean the safeguarding minister has said “That people struggling with the cost of living should take on more hours or move to a better-paid job”
How does a comment like this help the most vulnerable in society. Those that can’t work, the disabled pensioners or even those that can only take up low paid work for what ever reason. I find Mp’s and ministers are so out of touch with with the public, the comments they come out with are beyond nonsense.

August 17, 2022 at 3:19 pm #194475a sad end for an apparently nice old man by what looks like a piece of scum. as much as it can happen anywhere, anytime it seems to happen too often . as i said before(maybe not here) that anyone caught with a knife should get 10 years hard..

One week later the Glasgow police had their first weekend since the war without a single slashing or similar attack. This incident resulted in the phrase “Doing a Carmont” entering the language of the underworld and the press

I was waiting for your second post to be moderated before I replied, but looks as if its vabished.
Yes he deserves all he gets and I hope he gets the book thrown at him. For me a murderer is a murderer regardless of colour and they all deserve to be severely punished to the extent of capital punishment brought back. However there is too many cards at play for this to happen.
video of the poor guy enjoying himself busking with locals earlier in the year. :-/
Anyhow lets hope there is some better new tomorrow.

My car SEAT Ibiza SE Tec 1.2 petrol TSI 2017.August 18, 2022 at 10:42 am #194573One issue is we are a net importer of our energy, where fo example France isn’t. However if EDF do sue the French government for making them sell energy at a loss, ultimately a basket of goods will increas affecting their CPI. Likewise the drought affecting the Rhine is likely to cause issues with manufacturing.
As I see it there are too many variables going on in the world covid, Ukraine etc affecting inflation.
looking forward the Uk government whoever that maybe needs to nationalize services, become energy sufficient and bring back manufacturing to what it once was.
August 18, 2022 at 10:49 am #194575We are indeed a net importer of energy, kezo. We don’t need to be of course and if we weren’t we would not be hostage to world market prices.
August 18, 2022 at 11:15 am #194579Correct @Wigwam
Something I always find a little strange is other G7 countries such as France, Gremany and Italy won’t really publish their CPI for August untill next month. So currently we are 10.1% with there July figures. I’m not saying we won’t be the highest but the gap between them could be lower.
August 18, 2022 at 11:17 am #194580Electricity wise Scotland isn’t. Its usage was 97.5% last year but also sold a fair bit on to England.
Tories don’t want wind farms or solar panels in their ‘lovely south’.

August 18, 2022 at 11:26 am #194584we have a few around where i live in central belt. if they make power then im happy to have them. i dont think they are particularly ugly anyway. obviously you dont want a big one in bottom of garden but they dont even want offshore ones.

Lets hope he gets all he deserves and a dam sight more.
Its about time this country started ignoring the do gooders and let the police do the job how it used to be done. Maybe then crimes like tis will fall.
August 18, 2022 at 11:46 am #194587@Wigwam @struth we are surrounder by water, why not harness that power. It will make us self sufficient without the need for unsightlywind turbines that also pose a fire hazzard on dry land.
Swansea was earmarked for a tidal lagoon in 2015 by the UK government, the Welsh government approved it and pledged £200m in june 2018, However later that month the UK government withdrew its support!
August 18, 2022 at 11:53 am #194590Because tidal wave power generation can’t work in practice. For any such scheme to work would mean seriously changing the aquatic environment and destroying aquatic life. The Swansea scheme was a get rich venture by someone who wanted to spend our money to make himself rich. The UK government saw through it.
August 18, 2022 at 12:30 pm #194596Fair comment @Wigwam but I thought the water companies had already changed the aquatic enviroment. Athough the storey I heard in a nutshell was it would be chaeper to create electricity by a substantial amount over 60yrs using a mixture of wind/nuclear. see Clark’s speach.
However I do think water as a big part to play including more hydropower resevoirs.
But whatever happens one thing we agree on is that the UK needs to become 100% self suficient with energy.
August 18, 2022 at 12:43 pm #194598Hydropower works well in Norway and Switzerland (and no doubt other places with high mountains and rainfall). Our climate and topography limits its use here to Scotland which already provided some.
There are plenty of ideas to generate electricity from the movement of water but they are rarely cost effective or environmentally sound.
