ajnIf you weren’t on the scheme being helped with expense, would you be driving, buying the car you travel in now..
Would you be in a position to buy, and set up everything needed to use an electric car as your transport..
I can say I wouldn’t be interested at all of the expense on these cars at all..
How are people going to afford these electric goodies and all that come with it..
Its easy for us having help I guess, what happens when the help isn’t there…?..

Brydoajn
No
Yes
By 2025 most EVs will be cheaper to buy than ICE cars so all should be good on the scheme.
August 8, 2021 at 4:35 pm #160978Probably have to lease. Buying would make too big a hole in pocket. Would like to have a decent BEV. Held back from committing to one because a) I can see on-the-go charging at public points becoming very fraught. There will just not be enough of them. A half-hour recharge will become a two-hour drudge as you wait for one to become clear. And b) don’t think the makers have got the electronics/digital stuff/ apps etc. sorted yet. Go look at ID3 forums and the like. Software glitches abound. Including driver “aids” which slam on brakes at 70mph on motorway when there is nothing in front. Will wait a bit more, I think. Be glad when they do get it together. Like the idea of an engine with just one moving part!

ajnCan’t see how electric cars are going to be affordable to the average working man/woman with family..
Through the lockdown workers were praised all over the UK, ie supermarket staff, delivery staff, nurses etc for their hard work, being there when needed, going that bit extra to help out..
Go out to the car park what they driving, corsa, fiesta, mondeo, Clio, the odd bmw or golf petrol or diesel..
Why because it’s their transport for work, the real money will go on their loved family, the odd holiday, days meals out, hardly ever on themselves.
Imagine them splashing out on a new electric car, wages almost gone..
Where as save up 2g for a focus type thing well life is great for them then..
August 8, 2021 at 6:57 pm #160996@ajn Bit of a flawed argument there. The status Quo would remain the same.

August 8, 2021 at 7:15 pm #161002
ajnNot everything must be an argument Joss, just a simple explanation, or pointing in the right direction is fine..
2025 not to far away yet the prices will still be beyond most wages, even 2030..
Large work forces offer staff car purchases through their wages, I think these options will be the way forward for many..
August 8, 2021 at 7:25 pm #161003Very many people I know are self employed and contract workers with families, they need basic transport to get to workplaces on a budget, get their kids to school and child minders. Juggling their transport needs and sharing one car is a daily problem. EVs are just not in their vision..
August 8, 2021 at 7:52 pm #161005
ajnYes I agree wigwam..
These people are decent hard working, getting through their lives and enjoying it the best way they can..
Not one I know have an electric car, it’s not meant to get the supporters of electric cars upset, it’s a fact of what I see..
August 8, 2021 at 8:05 pm #161006
brydoNot everyone can afford a new car whether that be an EV or an ICE car so all the people listed above will do as they do now and buy a cheaper second hand car. Within the next few years EV’s will be cheaper than ICE so soon all new cars will be cheaper which eventually make the second hand cars cheaper helping those on tighter budgets.

IanfcaAll car manufacturers want to sell as many cars as possible. The only way they will survive is to make them affordable to the masses. Not all manufacturers will be aiming to sell to the rich elite , the interesting thing will be who will be the major players in EV technology in the future.
August 8, 2021 at 8:58 pm #161014
ajnTime will tell I guess..
Fact here is nobody knows, many can guess and make out they know the future, it’s time that have got the answer..

PhiljbI don’t drive anymore and it’s really hit me hard mentally
No I couldn’t afford to buy and run our current scheme car as it stands
like everyone else we will have to adapt to this new technology like it or not, who knows how affordable it will be to run an EV in the future we can only hope they will be affordable by all
If you have a look outside any of London’s private schools you’ll find rows of Tesla’s and and other EV’s being used for the school run. It’s been like this for a while I’m told it’s because it’s on trend whatever that means
So I can’t see why it won’t be desirable for others once the prices come down.
where I can’t see it working is light and heavy commercial vehicles, the current range they can travel between charges is way to small.
August 8, 2021 at 9:07 pm #161017ajn i don’t think you need a crystal ball to realise that BEVs are the future, £billions are being ploughed into bringing them to the market. where we end up with regard to Costs, charging times and range is certainly up for debate.
If we are to believe what we hear costs and charging times will come down and range will go up. This has been the way of it for the ten or so years BEVs have been around.

August 8, 2021 at 9:27 pm #161024Possibly but they are all jumping on the windfarm and solar electricity supply bus to ensure they make money in the future.

ajnUsually electric first thing to hit..
August 8, 2021 at 9:41 pm #161026
ajnWell anyway back to the price of cars thing, most people simply can’t afford new cars and must drive petrol/diesel older ones for every day living..
Do this make them bad people NO, yet some like to make out they are, whilst having help with payment of their brand new choice..
August 8, 2021 at 9:49 pm #161029
DafPrices of BEVs are and will continue to reduce. What we cant afford is to continue poisoning the environment.
August 8, 2021 at 9:55 pm #161031
ajnYes everyone wants to save the world till you say hand the keys over, don’t drive and wait till electric cars prices sort themselves out.
And you can afford one..
Then it gets amusing to change of concern…
August 8, 2021 at 10:00 pm #161035ajn non EV cars will be with us for many many years so nobody needs panic.

RhodgieIf I wasn’t on the scheme I wouldn’t be driving a brand new car.
I would still buy an EV as the only thing I’d need is an outdoor waterproof plug which I already have and I’d save a fortune on fuel costs on my commute. It wouldn’t be brand new though, up to £10k max.
Most people can’t afford a brand new car no matter how it is fueled but plenty of EV choices within my budget.
August 8, 2021 at 11:11 pm #161044
ajnGlad to here Rhod, well done
August 8, 2021 at 11:33 pm #161045The thing about buying a BEV off the scheme is that they are so reliable. Very few moving parts compared to an ICE. Sure there initially worries about battery degradation but that has been found to have been exaggerated. So running costs would be very low and for the next three to five years you will save a fortune on fuel costs.
