Sorry for the long post, but it’s a strange one! Been trying to order a VW Shuttle for nearly 5 months now, which means an early termination of the horrid Mazda CX60.
The majority of the problems have been unrelated to Motability. Until yesterday. My daughter has a Court of Protection Deputy who was appointed last October after we had her previous Deputy discharged. The problem has been registering the new Deputy with the DWP. This took until last Friday. Except that the drama is far from over.
We now have a vehicle ready for delivery in Birmingham, reserved for us by way of a £1K deposit. Unfortunately though, as I found out yesterday, we cannot terminate the Mazda until the Motability lease agreement has been transferred to the new Deputy, which is fair enough since, as it turns out, the Solicitors have been sat on that particular set of documents for more than 3 weeks without returning them to Motability.
Now here is my problem with Motability. I rang yesterday after the Deputy had been on the phone most of the morning with Motability. I quickly got to the bottom of the issue and what exactly needed to be done to enable us to take delivery of the Shuttle next week. I’ve chased this myself and it will now happen. However, during the call the lovely lady, quite casually, said if we don’t have the completed lease documents returned by Friday we will cancel the agreement anyway!
Quite where we stand in that scenario is totally unknown and I might be overthinking the consequences. So we have a car we want to send back and pay the £250 early termination fee. We can’t currently do that because the paperwork isn’t up to date. It’s also unlikely to be resolved by the Motability deadline. We have a Shuttle reserved for us ready to pick up next week. The Mazda looks immaculate ready for handover, and had intended driving the Mazda down to Birmingham from Haworth. I’m now worried this might not be possible due to not having insurance cover if Motability do what they say and cancel the agreement on Friday. I’m also worried we might get the Bailiffs calling to take back the Mazda!
I’m inclined just to put off the collection a week until this is all sorted. Atleast we’re blameless in the shambles lol.
And this is all down to the bureaucratic shambles that is the DWP, the Court of Protection and the glacial workings of law firms. We’ve had 4 Motability vehicles whilst I was Appointee and I sorted orders in an hour tops. This debacle is into it’s fifth month!!!
Topic: Mazda CX60 – 2 Years On!
Coming up to 2 years with the car now. All in all, quite easily the most disappointing car I’ve had the misfortune of driving!
The niggles are far too numerous to go into in detail. Save to say, there are many lol.
First and foremost, the ownership experience has been wrecked by just how poorly executed the whole car is. The software onboard is about as reliable as a snakes bowel movement. 8 – I repeat – 8 recalls in a two year period simply isn’t acceptable. It will be back in tomorrow for a new battery ( not the EV one).
The ride is terrible. almost like being on a trampoline doing 50MPH.
For a massive car it’s very cramped inside for the occupants. Boot not very capacious.
The driver safety features are fiendish and intrusive to the point of being downright dangerous. Every one has to be disengaged on every occasion upon starting. Cue every CX60 owner sitting blankly for a full minute whilst sifting the menus. Computer says can’t be switched off or setting stored in memory.
Positives – frugal when running on ICE ( bearing in mind it’s 340BHP!) HUGELY POWERFUL but completely unable to put the power through the wheels without scrabbling. Good job I drive like Reginald Molehusband.
For a £55K car it’s hopeless. To think I traded my daughter’s 12 year old up turned pram Fiat 500 for it!!
Anyone thinking of getting one – DON’T. There are many better cars available.

As those who have been following my thread ‘The Search Begins’ will know, my wife and I have been struggling to find a car that she can get in and out of easily. Of the cars that we liked (sadly very few these days on Motability) the Mazda CX60 was too high for her, the BMW 3 Series Touring was too low and the Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai Tucson were pretty good but don’t have proper grab style interior door handles. The best car for access was the BMW iX1 but we don’t really want an EV until the technology improves and I didn’t like the EV driving experience. Sadly, the new X1 petrol isn’t on the scheme and probably won’t ever be (although the PHEV might – which could be a possibility, subject to a test drive).
Motability have allowed us to extend the lease on our current petrol X1 by 2 years, so the pressure is off thankfully (especially as we really like our current car and there’s nothing on the scheme now that we’d prefer to it), but during that conversation I mentioned the challenges that we are having and Motability are kindly referring us to the nearest enablement centre, where various driver and passenger aids can be demonstrated. We are also going to attend the next Motability Big Event in Exeter (never been before) and have combined it with a couple of days in Devon.
One of the things mentioned on the call was a ‘Person Hoist’ which would lift my wife from her wheelchair into the front passenger seat and vice-versa. My wife isn’t terribly keen on the idea as she “feels disabled enough without advertising the fact” (her words), but it has struck me that if we went with one of these it would address the current challenge of most cars being too low or too high.
So my questions are this. Does anyone have experience of one of these person hoists and if so;
How easy are they to use? (I believe that they use a sort of sling – how easy is that to get in and out of for a full time wheelchair user who cannot stand unaided?)
Does the process take a long time (just envisaging doing it in the rain etc)?
Assuming that the mechanism lives in the car, how obtrusive is it when stowed (front passenger seat)? Does it make it awkward for an able bodied passenger to use the front passenger seat (get in the way etc)?
Any first hand feedback or advice would be much appreciated.
