The references to ‘woke’ are a bit irritating. Let’s rewind it back a bit, to a time before the word woke was used as a weapon to beat anyone you us seen as progressive. I have seen the videos of people complaining about the new drink driving laws as well as the introduction of seat belt laws. If the word woke was about then they would have called those bringing in these laws woke.</p> As someone who has spent a lot of time advocating for disability rights I would be seen as woke. It’s not woke it’s progress. Yes in some cases it has gone to far, but I believe that is more to do with the right and left just being a holes and wanting to irritate each other. Woke people introduced health and safety which stops people dying at work. Woke people introduced equality laws that protected disabled people as well as LGBTQ people whether you like it or not you can’t protect one group of people and ignore others

      Spot on.

Generally, leasing a car (and life in general) has become more expensive and, apart from the odd discounted deal, the monthly payments have gone up quite a bit. Motability can’t increase their monthly payments so they have to front-load the prices, because their prices are governed by what, if any, discount the manufacturer offers them, is the way I see it. The days of low interest rates, cheap raw materials and cheap motoring are behind us, it seems.

This article is about a year old but it answered some questions for me https://www.letstalkleasing.co.uk/news/industry-news/Why-have-some-car-lease-costs-increased-a-lot-in-2023#:~:text=Automakers%20periodically%20adjust%20their%20prices,depreciation%20over%20the%20lease%20term.

Hundreds of people have died, thousands of people have had their lives turned upside down due to the flooding and you ask the question, under the banner “Floods in Espana”, about how much depth of water can an EV handle?

I don’t know if speaking to a company like this would be an idea? There’s a few out there. Good luck

Western companies have had their own way for years, building analogue cars, but the Chinese have got a few years head start on them as far as building digital cars is concerned. They saw this coming.

                    Nice one 👍

We’ve had ours for just over a month, having had an ID.3, and it’s a cracking car to drive. Comfortable, seriously smooth and so manouverable at slow speeds. ID.4s come in for a lot of stick but I think it’s a cracking car 🤷 To each their own…

As you said, I’ll never willingly go back to an ICE car either.

                    Happy motoring

@kezo, I paid £434 in 1994 for a base model, 3 door manual (autos were about £1,000 more), 1.4 Astra. I couldn’t drive the manual and if I could’ve afforded the extra £1000 for an auto, you also had to buy your own hand-controls back then. This one cost me £49 AP, with hand-controls, and the two cars don’t bear comparison. Yes, I’m content! 🙂

With OVO, does it “only” allow you to charge your car with the cheap rates?

As far as I know, they have a standard 24/7 rate and then they offer bolt-ons for cheaper rate EV charging, heat-pump use and charging home battery’s. There is no “cheap-rate time” for the whole house.

I sound like I’ve got a vested interest, I haven’t! There seems to be a lot of love for Octopus on this website and not a lot of love for OVO though 😁 (I’ve got an ID.4 as well and there’s definitely no love for them either 😁)

Does OVO charge anytime work during the day, say I plugged in at 10am and said I wanted it charged by 5pm, would it work at the 7p rate?

Tbh, I’ve never had reason to try.

                            This is what they say:

“The Anytime Rates are applied 24/7/365 as long as you’re using Smart Charging. This doesn’t mean your EV will always charge 24/7/365, but using it this way will ensure you get the cheaper rates.”

It seems it’s down to how much excess/cheap electricity is on the market? Windy/sunny days would be best, I guess, but I always charged it at night and it worked fine.

Thanks Stuart some great info there👍Did you sign up for the Charge Anytime tariff on joining Ovo,or do you have to take the standard variable rate option and then upgrade to Charge Anytime as an existing customer?

Once you’ve joined OVO, you can just add Anytime https://www.ovoenergy.com/compatibility-check-charge-anytime?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwgfm3BhBeEiwAFfxrGwn-KkVB1UD4Jpsw2phJ5x7R9Ddq-SlMlVpBPPTMMihYSXcC1lnu8RoCUnsQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I don’t know if you’ve already got a Wall-charger but there’s a list of compatible chargers on their site. Octopus also have a list of compatible chargers https://octopus.energy/get-an-ev-charger/

…Ohme work with both. The only reason I mention it is because I trust the charger software more than the cars software, to control the charge. That comes from getting an ID.3 in 2021 with VW 2.1 software…! 😁

We’re all different and what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for someone else. This EV charging at home and smart electric tariffs is still in its infancy and I’ve no doubt that 10 years from now it’ll be smarter again.

                              Cheers

Hi any info appreciated I have a screw in the original Goodyear front tyre Kwikfit are unable to source another Goodyear and want to mix brands on same axle by fitting an available continental tomorrow Motorbility have agreed this but I read that mixing brands can affect the handling and cars ……………………………………………………………………………………….. No, it’s generally not recommended to mix different tire brands and tread patterns on the same axle. Doing so can be dangerous and illegal, and can increase the risk of accidents. Here are some reasons why mixing tires can be dangerous: Steering, braking, and rolling resistance: Mismatched tires can cause an imbalance in these areas. Electronic Stability Program (ESP): Different tire manufacturers may aim for different diameters, which can cause the ESP to malfunction. Drive train: Mixing tires on all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles can damage the drive train. There are some rare exceptions for approved mixed-tire fittings, but in general, manufacturers do not recommend mixing tires. ………………………………………………………………… Can you put tyres of different brands, treads, depths or seasons on the same axle? This is generally prohibited by law. On the same axle, tyres should even be of the same model. However, there is a tolerance if the use is temporary. For example, if you have a puncture and are driving with your spare wheel. In this case, you should go to a professional as soon as possible to have the tyre replaced. https://www.michelin.co.uk/auto/advice/choose-tyres/mixing-tyres

After reading this, my first thought was to get the same brand tyres on the front and have the odd pair on the rear. I’m sure the garage will swap them around?

Just looking to pick the brains of anyone using ovo charge anytime.Do you know in advance which time slots are available for cheap charging at least 24 hours in advance ? What are you paying for peak rate electricity at the moment and is that figure higher than ovo peak rate if you don’t have ev charging ? (from October 1st I mean).I know it varies by region but that’s ok.Do you have to leave your car plugged in most of the time to get the cheap rate ? Thankyou in advance.

Up until a few weeks ago I was with OVO. They say that Anytime Charging is available 24/7, with no pre-determined charging slots, but I just used to plug the car in about 10pm, set the time in the app at 05.00am for the car to be ready, and it would start charging shortly thereafter. The in-car timed-schedule wouldn’t be active, it was all controlled by the charger-app and Kaluza, and it worked just fine.

I was paying 21.42p per kWh for all the electricity I used, OVO charged me for that and they would then work out how much electricity was used to charge the car, at 7p per kWh, and rebate me the 14.42p per kWh difference in to my account the following month.

Once you’ve set up the timer in the Indra app (I’ve got an Indra charger and I’m guessing it’s the same for Ohme, etc), then I looked upon it as a dumb-charger that I just plugged in at 10pm – it worked for me 👍 According to their blurb, you just set the timer in the app for when you want the car to be ready, plug it in whenever, and it’ll be ready by the time set (Kaluza take control), at least that’s my understanding of it…, but I just plugged it in after peak-usage on the grid and charged it overnight.

Basically, OVO have one tariff for all 24/7 usage and they offer the Anytime ev deal as something that’s bolted-on to the original tariff. Far simpler than Octopus’s smorgasbord of tariffs, in my opinion 😁

Hello there, Electric battery vehicles are at their most efficient when the battery is up to temperature and they aren’t at their most efficient doing short journeys with a cold battery. After 10 miles or so, depending on the ambient temperature, the efficiency improves greatly, so ignore the efficiency readings after short journeys with a cold battery. ICEs are exactly the same. Just live with the car and you’ll learn how it behaves. Happy motoring 🤞👍

Thats a new one on me. It does make sense though. If your car is plugged in at home, pre-heat the car, that’ll warm up both battery and the car using the house power supply.

Motoring in the cold wasn’t something that was really spoken about until EVs came along but it’s always been more costly

Like others have mentioned, I’m a little concerned at how high the consumption will be on the E3008. The projected miles just seems to be way in excess of what I’m actually getting. If I drive 10 actual miles, the range in the car drops by 20 miles, as an example. So I’m worrying that I won’t even get 200 miles from a full charge…. and that’s in decent weather, eco mode, just me in the car and babying the accelerator! To be fair, after only having it for 12 days, I haven’t let the SOC drop below 50% before topping it up. I’m wondering if, like some ICE cars I’ve had, the range drops like a stone the fuller the tank is and settles down below half full…

                                      Hello there,

@Brydo That OVO anytime seems a very good deal. They just quoted me 23.96 per unit with 38.64 standing charge. The anytime deal can be added to any OVO tariff.

My experience of OVO Anytime is positive. Their app gives you the upcoming 48 hours of the grids’ carbon levels (green, amber or red) so you can aim for the green times if you want but I mainly charged the car at night and I’d plug it in just after 10pm and and it would invariably start charging almost immediately – it never let me down. Also, I’ve only just learnt that they’ve started a Battery Boost tariff that let’s you charge the battery overnight for 10p per kwh but that’s another story…

MG will begin to equip electric cars with solid-state batteries within the next 12 months, an official from its parent company, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), has confirmed. M’s ‘Lightyear’ battery is claimed to offer a more than double the energy density – at 368 watts per kilogram – compared with its existing lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery. With a capacity of 133kWh, it provides the L6 saloon with an official range of 673 miles on China’s Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). IM Motor says the Lightyear battery is also able to provide its latest model with up to 249 miles of range in 12 minutes on a high-powered DC charger. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mg-launch-first-electric-car-solid-state-battery-2025

A few years ago I can remember reading that 400 Watts per kg was the magic number for small electric aircraft to be viable. It’s getting closer 👏 There’s some clever people out there! 😏

Stuart, so your 50% Scottish I knew I liked you, well half of you 😂 Yes the electricity business is in real flux just now with major changes to supply, infrastructure and how it is produced. Electricity from Wind farms is unpredictable and will therefore mean that there will be times of electricity abundance and times of scarcity. Battery storage gives the opportunity to help level out the grid but it also gives opportunities to make money. Reducing your daily use from your battery leaves you with excess energy to sell back at a profit. It’s crazy but will encourage more uptake in battery storage.

                                              @Brydo
, it’s only half but it’s something I’m proud of! No idea why though… 😁

As for the changing energy landscape, battery storage is the future as far as I can make out and yet again, as far as electrification is concerned, China are leading the way. Norway is impressive with what they’ve done but the scale of some of the projects in China are eye watering – they’ve also started installing sodium-ion battery storage which sounds an interesting development. It’s a time of great change, after over a 100 hundred years of burning fossil fuels

The more I can do from the mains the more I can sell back to the grid during the day from my battery. Signed:- Very tight Scot 😜

, not at all! 🙂 Don’t worry yourself though, I don’t run appliances overnight 😉

                                                  Cheers

, in case you’re interested, I’ve just signed up to Octopus!

I like the thought of being able to run the house and car at cheap rate all year a good one. Being able to charge the battery overnight was the clincher – I’m thinking about the dark, wet, short days in winter.

                                                    Cheers, for the heads up.

I’ve currently got an ID3 that’s due to go back today after three years, I ordered an ID4 3 months ago and the dealer contacted me yesterday to say it’ll be at the dealers this week and he’s contacted the hand-controls firm to get an installation date from them.

A bigger boot was needed this time so a larger car was required. I looked at the Q4 – very nice but too expensive for me; I thought about the Enyaq – very nice but the dealership is too far away for me; I looked at the Ioniq 5 – a beautiful car but the dealer was a joke and the drive selector location makes hand-control installation a nightmare as far as I could make out. Then the ID4 AP was reduced to £49, after taking off the £750 cashback, my last three cars have all come from this VW dealership and they’ve looked after me superbly, the spec for the Match Pro is more than enough for me so as an overall decision it was easy to make. Yes, there are better cars out there but this works for me and, when all’s said and done, it’s not mine it’s a 3 year lease and having been on Motability since 1993 I know that three years flies by.

Happy motoring, no matter what car you choose! 👀😎
