My car was ready for collection on 19th December. The dealer called and said it would be prudent to leave my car in their compound and wait till after 1st Jan to see what happened to the A/P. He said he had a feeling it was going to be cheaper for me. True enough, it has gone down and I’ve saved a few quid for waiting a bit.
This is the second time this has happened, once at Toyota and once at Ford. Both times my contract has been sorted in minutes by the dealer.August 28, 2023 at 1:15 pm in reply to: Toyota RAV4 hybrid suddenly takes over steering, causing accident #231414On 2021 models user manual page p362 LTA setting can be adjusted and/or turned off. mine was the 2022 model. I collected it in June 22. As with you the dealer set it all up. I had no problems at all with it until Dec 22 when the accident happened. I had no idea it could be switched off by me, but I would never have switched it off anyway. I’m devastated to lose the car and not be able to replace it with another rav4. I’m currently using a loan Qashqai but probably getting a Ford Kuga PHEV so I can have a a hoist for my scooter. thank you for the responses so far, I’ve found some helpful comments, especially the link.
I am with Kezo, I initially ordered a Kuga ST X Edition, both the FHEV and PHEV have an engine problem to date Ford do not have a fix, it has been both highlighted on the Kuga and this forum, I cancelled. As you are in the market for a quality reliable PHEV look at the Mazda CX-60, it has all the safety features you require and more, I would suggest the Suzuki Across which is a rebadged Toyota RAV4 PHEV, the Across appears to be more economical the the CX-60, however after your experience and loss of confidence with the Toyota RAV4 I would probably give that a miss. If I can give an opinion your accident, it is just that an unfortunate accident, I wish you luck with your case.
I can order one straight away. Motability and RSA have been fantastic and really supportive. They are funding my motoring defence legal team.
August 28, 2023 at 10:27 am in reply to: Toyota RAV4 hybrid suddenly takes over steering, causing accident #231397I wouldn’t opt for a Kuga – Ford has issued a recall for its Kuga plug-in hybrid (PHEV) car following concerns that overheating high-voltage battery packs could potentially cause a vehicle fire. Owners are being advised not to charge their car!
I thought that had been resolved

August 28, 2023 at 9:58 am in reply to: Toyota RAV4 hybrid suddenly takes over steering, causing accident #231393Clearly we dont know what happened and hopefully an investigation will find out (although if the vehicle has been scrapped already thats going to be difficult). For me this is a good reminder to everyone that using/relying on things like adaptive cruise control and lane departure when driving around town etc are risky. I have a friend who used to use these all the time and it was scary being with him in the car because he totally left the car to keep him in lane and apart from the car in front. I need to finish by saying again I am absolutely NOT saying the above is what happened (we dont know), but its a good reminder of how to use these systems well. Could be worth visiting the road again to see whether there are any significant repair lines which might fool the cars system. Good luck with the investigation
thank you for this important reminder. It is worrying that people will rely on this as more cars have it in the future.
in my case, the whole driver assist was a peace of mind back up as I can only use my left hand. The same with the Veigel 7.
I felt the car pull right and the steering aid was pulled out of my hand. The car then pulled again to the right, sharper this time and went into oncoming traffic. I said to the police at the time that it felt like I’d hit ice, mud, diesel etc but the car should have not allowed me to cross the centre line due to all the driver assistance activated. I was told by the police no such car assistance exists. I explained that nothing had worked the way it should, crossed the white line with no vibration warning or automatic centring, airbags didn’t go off, didn’t automatically call emergency services, engine was screaming and wouldn’t switch off etc. Police claim I wasn’t concentrating, I know that’s not true.August 27, 2023 at 10:38 pm in reply to: Toyota RAV4 hybrid suddenly takes over steering, causing accident #231375My Toyota RAV4 was a few months old. Clearly not a Motability car then
it most definitely was. I’m not sure why you would find that difficult to believe and funny.
I misread your comment, thinking you had only had it a few months, as the Rav4 hasn’t been back on the scheme since Ianuary 2021. Perhaps looking if you haven’t done so already on any UK Rav4 or any Toyota forums for that matter and seeing if their has been a similar case. Although its probably a bit late to get your convictions squashed ?
Thank you for the apology ?. thankfully I’ve not got a conviction as yet. RSA have provided excellent defence solicitors who specialise in motoring. Unfortunately the vehicle was scrapped before it was inspected. We’ve got information from across the pond where a class action is being prepared but not a lot from Europe. I know there’s been some posts about RAV4s behaving dangerously and causing accidents on this forum. I’ve not tried the RAV4 forum but that’s a great shout, I’ll try there too.
August 27, 2023 at 8:20 pm in reply to: Toyota RAV4 hybrid suddenly takes over steering, causing accident #231370Moderated again! @dbryan I wild guess but, could it have been your Veigel 7 steering aid that throwed a wobbler, rather incorrectly communicated with the car and jammed the sytem causing the car to ack abrutly!
the Veigel 7 is a steering handle fitted to the steering wheel with buttons for functions such as indicators, windscreen wipers etc. although I only ever used the indicators as the rest was set to automatic on the car.
August 27, 2023 at 7:55 pm in reply to: Toyota RAV4 hybrid suddenly takes over steering, causing accident #231365The LTA is really designed for designed duel carriage and motorway driving, default the system is switched off, however safety sense warning is always on, I always leave mine in the default setting off.
Why do you think the system was designed for dual carriageways and motorways? The whole point of me getting the car was the additional safety features, as someone who had recently became paralysed all down the right side. At no point were we told the system was only designed for dual carriageways. I only do local journeys normally. Something malfunctioned, the steering pulled to the right and the steering aid was pulled out of my hand. Tha car then crossed the centre line and hit another car without and safety features enabling.
this random behaviour has been reported widely in the states and there have been a few reports over here, including on this forum.August 27, 2023 at 7:03 pm in reply to: Toyota RAV4 hybrid suddenly takes over steering, causing accident #231359My Toyota RAV4 was a few months old. This is a completely serious post and, yes, it was a Motability vehicle. The accident happened in December 22.
