I thought I would make a thread on what caught you eye in the news good or bad. This follows on from last week when I posted about the MP Lee Anderson who suggested we could cook a meal from scratch for 30p and foodbanks weren’t needed if we could cook.
So today another Tory MP Racheal Maclean the safeguarding minister has said “That people struggling with the cost of living should take on more hours or move to a better-paid job”
How does a comment like this help the most vulnerable in society. Those that can’t work, the disabled pensioners or even those that can only take up low paid work for what ever reason. I find Mp’s and ministers are so out of touch with with the public, the comments they come out with are beyond nonsense.

Energy suppliers have been asked by Whitehall officials whether they would be able to funnel more public funds to households through an existing subsidy mechanism, in the clearest sign yet that a fresh intervention is planned amid surging energy prices.

If you stop the price increases they would not be able afford to buy energy to sell to you. They would pack up business and you would have no gas or electricity. It’s inevitable, I’m afraid.

August 21, 2022 at 10:24 am #194868Civil sevants contacting energy supply companies to ask if they can channel more money through in a similar way as the £400 will, is bs to me @joss. As much as I and no doubt the rest of us appreciate any help as energegy prices are going through the roof, I don’t think this way is benificial to the country as a whole.
What needs to be done is it needs to be dealt with at source. The big energy companies profits should be capped by what ever means feasable and any green levies abandoned during this energy crisis. Otherwise the country will continue to add to its debt whils’t energy companies continue to see profit upon profit.
Ultimately services in this country need to be nationalized again.

No Wigwam. I was talking about the introduction of the price caps moving to quarterly from bi annually.

August 21, 2022 at 11:34 am #194896Could switching smart meter readings to every half hour put your home at risk of being BURGLED? That’s the warning from cyber experts – but suppliers insist devices are safe
Anyone who has installed a ‘smart’ meter to keep a regular eye on their consumption of electricity and gas is being warned the device could increasingly become a target for hackers………
“Trade body Smart Energy GB insists the smart metering system in the UK has been ‘specifically designed to prevent hacking’.”
Never say never, if they can break into a bank or steal a car they can hack a smart meter the same as they can hack frameworks. Howevery its not something I would be overly worrid about, rather just aware of.
August 21, 2022 at 2:00 pm #194903GPs could write prescriptions for money off energy bills for the most vulnerable under a plan drawn up by the Treasury, as Liz Truss’s team signalled more help with costs now forecast to top £6,000 next year.
The unusual proposal would mean people could consult their doctor for an assessment on whether they are struggling enough to require help with their bills.

NHS heads warn of ‘humanitarian crisis’ unless government acts on energy costs

A senior government source said the GP plan was “something that we are
interested in looking at” although a “long way off completion”.The idea first reported in the Sun on Sunday was dismissed by the shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting, saying the Conservatives “have lost the plot on the cost of living crisis and haven’t got a clue about the level of pressure on the NHS”. It would probably be resisted by overstretched doctors.

August 22, 2022 at 11:37 am #194962Cash payback for not using high-energy appliances during peak hours under new plans
People could be paid for turning off high-energy appliances during peak times this winter.
Those with smart meters could get up to £6 per kilowatt hour (kWh) saved as energy prices rise with strained supply and the expectation the National Grid could come under pressure.
The National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) is understood to be working on an announcement for the plan.
Rebates for not using appliances like tumble dryers, dishwashers and electronics between 5pm and 8pm would net customers a return……..
August 22, 2022 at 11:49 am #194963Somehow I don’t think it will as straight forward as reported. The devil will be in the details.

The Government has sought to reassure people over concerns power supplies could be limited over the cold months. Downing Street insisted that there would be sufficient electricity and gas supplies over the winter.
A No 10 spokeswoman said: “Households, businesses and industry can be confident they will get the electricity and gas that they need over the winter. “That’s because we have one of the most reliable and diverse energy systems in the world.”
That was partly due to a lack of reliance on Russian gas, access to North Sea reserves and imports from “reliable partners” like Norway. She said people should not panic or feel they should cut down on energy use.
“These decisions, in terms of energy consumption, remain decisions for individuals,” she said. “But what I’m saying is that households, businesses and industry can be confident that they will have the electricity and gas that they need.”
Concerns had previously been raised in a leaked government “reasonable worst case scenario”. It said it was feared the UK could experience blackouts for several days in January if cold weather combined with gas shortages to leave the country short of power.

LOL petrol, diesel or battery
I have a petrol one that I use to use on building sites and for power cuts (we have a few) but the neighbours complained but never stopped me from using it. I reckon they were jealous 🙂

Army members have been told that they “must be prepared” for the possibility of being deployed to Ukraine to fight in the war against Russia
Warrant Officer Paul Carney issued the warning six months on from Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country in February, saying that British troops “must be prepared for new realities” as the UK military was now “shaping itself to meet the threat from Russia”.
WO1 Carney, the Army’s highest-ranking Warrant Officer, instructed soldiers to check that they were physically fit enough for operations, as well as taking the time to have conversations with family members, The Mirror reports . WO1 Carney wrote in Soldier magazine: “It is also important we prepare loved ones and families, who often have the hardest role in our absence.
