I know a few of us are eagerly awaiting delivery of these so thought I’d make a thread so we can all keep track of updates etc

Ordered ultimate Misty jungle (with light leather) on 9th November. Delivery slated for end of March. Dealer has had no update yet.

Capuchin, just a word of thanks for starting this thread which has now reached an epic “FIFTY PAGES’. I thought that needed shouting, lol!

Your thread has enabled the formation of a group of friends sharing a common interest, and it’s a real pleasure to see.

          Thank you.

i think once you have your VIN then you can believe and you have at least two weeks to sort out any last minute prep for the car – or like most of us have done look at vids about how to – to try and get ahead of the game – so for me it was –
Knowing how to pair my phone and how to connect to apple car play – then if you are charging at home – the best way etc – if you have no charger – where are the nearest fastest chargers that are fast cheap or free and reliable.

Hope you get your VIN soon ?

Yes totally agree – I’m sure we all do – I’m sure capuchin you never envisaged it catching on so much and morphing into a support, advise, experience and reference point for all things ordered, newbie and Kona EV ? ???

An update on the charging issue, dealership were unable to help and referred me to Head Office. They are aware of the issue and I am due a call back by the end of the week. I have my own temporary solution to the problem in the meantime.

Now clocked up 160 miles at an average of 5.2 miles per kWh.

I will look to post a review this weekend, the good, the bad and the great!

Very useful for what I’m thinking @capuchin. Just to clarify you do get 3yrs free charging from mb, should I not wish to take the charger optin.

Ive spoken with BP Pulse a few times and been told repeatedly that as a registered Motability member, you DO NOT get free charging. Motability pay the £7+ for 36 months and you only get a slightly cheaper charging rate. Have I been wrongly advised?

Another day of no news on delivery. Car is at Tilbury with no date set 🙁

Currently without car as previous car returned last week, Kona was meant to be with me by end of July.

Going away on the 19th, cat needs to go to boarding on 18th, I need to go to airport….

Range anxiety replaced by delivery anxiety!

Interesting and if thats the case I will be having mb install a charger instead. My plan was to install a charger myself and take the charging option when I went electric.

£7 aonth equates to £252 over 3years whitch doen’t sound alot in the grand scheme of how much a wall charger would cost mb.

Maybe someone in the know or @capuchin can confirm exactly what you get.

A few useful bits to know for those considering a Kona Electric.

Build times are appx 8 months, typically 7-9 depending on colour/trim. Ultimates take a little longer yhan the lower trims.

Cars are built in Korea and shipped from Ulsan to Tilbury.

                          Shipping takes appx 1 month.

Upon arrival in Tilbury a VIN number should be available.

Shipping from Tilbury to dealer takes 3-4 weeks typically.

Updates are available from the dealer or Hyundai Customer Services.

Only Optional Extra is a Heat Pump £875.

Motability will pay for a home charger if its your 1st electric car on the scheme. There are some T&C’s on their website and exclusions.

For info on the car and opinions, there is lots within this thread.

I think I have solved my charging problem, it seems to have worked this evening by deactivating “charging/energy” from the menu. Feeling much happier now, ready for the challenges of tomorrow which includes changing the cartridge on our kitchen tap! Cant wait!!

Thanks guys. I never would have imagined it’d get this big. I’ve felt guilty multiple times and almost started a ‘Kona Owners Club’ thread the other day to separate them a bit!

                              @Kezo
Some BP Pulse chargers are free to members, not all or even most. It’s worth checking the map at http://network.bppulse.co.uk/live-map/ and then setting the filter to ‘free. Worth noting that they do have a few RAPID (50-100KW) free chargers. So if you live near one of these, or even a 22…. (Remember though the 22’s are AC and will 0nly charge at 11.2 on the Kona, though they’ll charge at full speed all the way up to 90% instead of dropping off fast after 80 like the rapids)

Also worth noting the BP Pulse network has a terrible reputation for reliability etc amongst ev owners. I don’t know if they are improving personally or not…

Stopped charging a little while back at 96%, showing 317 mile range in Eco. Anyway will not charge again until battery is down to 50%.

Here is a short, fairly short initial review of the Kona Electric Ultimate 64kWh.

In terms of appearance the car has a nice chunky look, like a small SUV, the alloys look really smart and the Dark Knight paint really stands out in the sun.

                                    The good points.

The car is fun, and fast, to drive in sports mode, but relaxed in Eco. The infotainment system is one of the best, comprehensive and quick to respond with voice control for many features. The Sat Nav features traffic info which has assisted me on several occasions.

The controls are logically laid out and there are real controls for the Climate Control.

The car is packed with safety features, all of which work seamlessly together.

The interior quality is actually very good. Soft materials on the dash and around the door area, albeit it some harder ones lower down.

Great efficiency, I am averaging 5.2, and returned 4.8 on the motorway.

Car is packed with technology and safety.

Ventilated seats are fantastic during warm weather and do not affect the range.

Real life range 330 miles, which I do expect to fall in winter.

                                    Lots of storage.

Plenty of room in the front, rear adequate.

Front seats very comfortable, for a brand new car. Normally takes a few weeks for them to adjust to the body’s countours.

                                    Bad Points.

Cant find somewhere to keep my mobile. Too big to fit in charging pad.

Tech was a bit annoying to get to grips with, especially the now resolved, hopefully!, issue of scheduled charging.

Boot is a tad on the compact size.

                                    That’s about it.

So overall very impressed indeed. Hyundai seem to do everything really well.

Anyone considering this car, its well worth the 8 month wait.

The key factor for many will be the range. Judging by most of the comments here, the actual real life range will exceed the 300 mile WLTP, with the mid 300’s a realistic possibility, depending, of course, on how the car is driven.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Hi fwippers – I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max – it has a protective case – so actual dimensions 16cm x 8cm – it fits fine tho I use a right angle usb to right angle lightning connection – it is worth noting that the initial concern I had of phone getting hot has sorted itself and only gets warm.

So what phone do you have and dimensions – this would be useful for people to know what fits and what dosnt.

It is worth noting – without right angle lightning connection lid would not close and some right angle connectors are longer than others – I did post a picture of the one I use that is also coiled – so easy to use phone in hand when needed. – also note that Hyundai recommend that cable should not be left in usb when not in use – it has become a habit for me – both connecting when getting in car and disconnecting on leaving .

I have a Samsung M12, which is quite a big phone. 164×76 mm, but I also have a case which increases the dimensions. For me its no big deal, I actually rest it on top of the lid.

Another small negative for some, no USB in the back. For us not an issue and two in the front plus wireless charging, more than sufficient.

Time now to start enjoying the car and the benefits, including financial, of electric motoring.

Sadly I would need a couple of USB sockets in the rear should I choose to go with the car, but no big deal as I could install a couple from the 12v boot socket. Alternativaly a long lead can be taken tidely from the front for those with less knwow how.

I’m going to have another look at the Kona when I’m feeling a bit better, to check out rear passenger and boot space and look at the possibility of a roof box, although using one would affect the mileage no doubt.

Hi Kezo – I would have thought weight in a roof box maybe an issue too – ev’s by their nature are heavier cars – tho I think the Kona has done a good job of keeping the battery weight low slung under the car.

Might be worth posing the question on this and other EV forums to see if it’s been done and how it effects the handling – I have a cigarette lighter style twin usb for the front power out – but I cannot see why you couldn’t do similar for the rear power point for back seat passengers.

Agreed a roofbox would need proper looking into. It would be used to put any backseat drivers in lol.

It would have been such a let down not to be able to hear all the news from each recipient. The little teething problems, the excitement of the first long journey, essentials to have on board etc etc. My list is growing each time I read a new posting, latest addition to the list is – A picnic is an absolute must – Thank you @fwippers, picnic blanket purchased yesterday. A step forward for me, home charger has been installed. I had to wait a few months for a power upgrade to be carried out (1950’s bungalow) thankfully the bungalow wasn’t on a looped supply! It’s been more than a week since I thought about my own delivery.

A home charger for me is essential, I wouldn’t want to rely on public charging although there are many who do this perfectly well. I am planning to visit family in London, and whilst the return journey is 250 miles I need to add another 25 gor journey’s between various relatives. I have found 2 charging options, both of which offer 100kWh, and in fact 350kWh. With a max charging capacity of 77kWh. I reckon a 10 min charge will add around 45 miles of range which should be more than sufficient to get me home.
