Anthony BuckleyWell after a short wait of only 355 days since we ordered our Kona Ultimate EV in Galactic Grey on 24-8-23. Our car will be handed over to us on Monday, which also happens to be our 47th wedding anniversary, so I can tick off this years present. I have arranged a couple of days away in the Lake District as soon as I collect the car, so a nice 250 miles round journey as a first trip in the car. Also detailed were the nearest fast charging point for the return journey. Just got a few extras to fit on Monday morning, some front wind wind deflectors from Mick’s Garage as recommended on this thread, a Frunk for the spare charging cables and full coverage boot liner for our dog. I will post some photos on Monday or Tuesday of the car and any comments about our first journey in our Kona.

Ian WebsellHi All
its a while since I posted. But 12,000 miles later I’m still getting 385 on a full charge and running 5.9kwh. The Kona is brilliant, although tonight when I went out my display screen is black, radio is still on but nothing else. Not even the reverse camera. Anyone else had this issue and if so what was the issue?
stay safe everyone ??
September 3, 2023 at 11:27 am #232169Thread has been a bit quiet lately – I guess most of us waiting delivery of first generation Kona have now received their cars.
I finally picked up my Ultimate ordered 27th June 2022 on Friday – waited a couple of weeks extra to get the new reg. Can now see the revised colour, Econetic Grey, and have to say that I quite like it in the sunlight – the glitter in the paint certainly lifts the colour, but I can’t detect any ‘pearlescent’ effect.
So, the electric journey begins! I’ll update with my thoughts once I’ve done a few miles if the thread is still alive!
Maybe someone will create a new thread once the 2nd generation Kona comes onto the scheme?
Safe and pleasant motoring to all!
Sean
Current car Hyundai Kona Ultimate EVSeptember 3, 2023 at 12:32 pm #232182To Ian & junglegreen
Ian I had a similar issue with my Prius Phev – it was the normal 12v battery that died – it only charged when engine was running which wasn’t often as it would do 35 mls in phev battery – not sure if the Kona has a separate 12v battery – just a thought.
good you have your car junglegreen – I cannot compete with Ian – my average is 4.7 but I am more than happy with that – I have posted a lot of stuff observations and suggestions – but I know it can be a chore looking back thru posts to find answers to questions etc. I am more than happy to repeat stuff – but people need to have signed up on the forum for me to have emails to see new posts ie I saw junglegreen post and responded – I only saw yours Ian when I went to respond to junglegreen.
I am still extremely pleased with my car – it is both practical for my needs and a pleasure to drive – enjoy ? ?

AnthonyI thought an update on my Kona European trip might help other Kona owners go on longer trips with this great EV. Only negative is the range fell to around 240 to 250 miles range and a 3.7Kwh due to driving at realistic speeds not 55 miles an hour.
Having only owned my Hyundai Kona Ultimate EV for just two weeks and the only time I charged it was on my home Easee charger. We set off from Manchester to Fréjus in the South of France approximately 1,050 miles. While we had travelled the same journey many times in a petrol car, this was our first time in our EV. We only used Google maps to plan our trip as previous experience made us confident that charging in France would be no trouble at Motorway services. In France the motorway services appear to be every twenty miles or so all the way fromCalais to the South of France. As expected we did not experience any waits or faulty chargers on our journey. While driving our EV the same way as a petrol car, at an average speed of over 80 miles an hour (yes above road speed limits but you rarely see French police or speed cameras on the motorway). The journey took us 23 hours from start to finish about 3 hours longer than in a petrol car. The cost in petrol normally from start to finish around £450 ending the journey with an almost full tank. The cost of charging our car using a Charge map card (accepted at every charger we stopped at) only £153.26. We did not in counter any problems charging in France for the four weeks we were there. Do not worry about driving in a EV in Europe, if a novice EV user like us could do it with just two weeks experience driving our new car then anyone can do it.
October 17, 2023 at 9:19 am #238783Hi @Anthony,
many thanks for that insight. I was planning a similar European road trip down to Southern Spain next year so it’s reassuring to hear that your charging experience was so positive.
I had to charge away from home for the first time yesterday, and chose an Instavolt charger which was close to where we were staying over the weekend. Unfortunately, the charger would not accept my Octopus Electroverse card, and also my debit card was declined by my bank for some reason (not lack of funds, I hasten to add!) Third time lucky it did accept my credit card, but I well and truly had my trousers pulled down and backside spanked at 85p/kWh!! I understand that with only occasional charging away from home (where I’m currently paying 19p/kWh until next September) it doesn’t affect the average cost too much and in the past I’d have been putting 70-80 pounds of petrol in my old ICE car.
And yes, once my current fix ends, I’ll be looking at the option of a cheaper overnight tariff – there’s no incentive to change at the moment as I only cover relatively low mileage (approx. 500 miles per month) and as we are retired, most of our average 9kWh per day usage (pre-EV) is during the daytime. I’m not comfortable with using the big appliances such as washing machine and tumble drier whilst we’re in bed, although I do sometimes put the dishwasher on last thing before bed.
Anyways, nice to see the thread is still alive!
Pleasant motoring to all, EV or ICE.

Current car Hyundai Kona Ultimate EVNovember 17, 2023 at 10:56 am #244222I see the new Kona is now available, £2599 or just £299 for the old one. I have notices fast charging is now around 79-85p/kWh, despite a fall in electricity prices. A nicer choice of electric cars overall.
November 17, 2023 at 12:21 pm #244233Hi Flippers – hope you are well – long time no message
Top model 3800 – but all the larger battery saying 282 – didn’t notice if charging speed had increased – but for me, I don’t see an advantage – I suppose this time next year I may start to look – but on current evidence I will extend and stick with what I have.
I would be looking for a real 350+ miles and quicker charging – I haven’t charged much away from home, but hour stops for half a charge I would definitely want to improve – stay well and safe ??

65.5kWh battery, 319 miles WLTP, 100kW max DC charging 🙂
November 17, 2023 at 2:20 pm #244595Thanks Kezo
Slight improvement then – I got the 282 figure from the Motability site – since I have had my care my ongoing average is 4.8 – tho I suspect my mileage is much less than most people – apart from occasional long trips it is mostly about convenience.
Not something I will be assessing until at the earliest this time next year ??
November 17, 2023 at 2:50 pm #244683A long and busy year. I think I would stick with the current Kona. We have averaged just under 5 miles/kWh, which is a real life range of 320. Its way too soon to be thinking about our next car, but its nice there are lots more options now. I see the BMW iX1 is available, but disappointing so many “essential” things come as part of a £1680 package. I have to take my car to the dealer on Tuesday for an upgrade to the sat nav, so will have a good look at the Ioniq 5 and 6. For an overall package, the Kona is still, IMO, the one to beat.
November 17, 2023 at 3:16 pm #244804The question is, will the new one live upto the real life economy of the older model!
@Tillyman Forgot to add the new Kona also comes witth heatpump as standard.April 20, 2025 at 4:37 pm #304556The question is, will the new one live upto the real life economy of the older model! @Tillyman Forgot to add the new Kona also comes witth heatpump as standard.
Interesting question. Having completed just over 20k in the “old” Kona, I have averaged 4.7m/KwH, which is 301 miles on a full charge, against a WLTP figure of 300.

Blast from the past lol
In a nutshell no, it’s not as economical. The car is bigger and of course more roomier and the battery hasn’t increased enough to cope with the size difference!
Told my mum to get one and she got N Line S with 19″ wheels and lucky to get near what your getting (220-270 miles) Whether summer will improve on that is another matter.
The Ultimate has the no cost option of coming with 17″ wheels, which will improve economy but, by how much! At a guess no more than your getting.
Good to see you 🙂
