I am considering a 4 kW solar panel system on our south facing 5 year old detached bungalow, I am already with Octopus Energy Go , our Motability car Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

JojoeI was thinking about this for when we go electric, it would mean free miles. Was looking at battery storage but a little worried about having such a big battery in the house.
January 28, 2022 at 5:13 pm #175560If and when V2G EV chargers come on line you will be able to power your house from our EV car battery, this will help balance the grid. the Nissan Leaf already has this capability.

Ian<p style=”text-align: left;”>I’ve got solar panels (6.72kw) and an Ev. It takes some effort to have the car available and the photovoltaic cells producing enough charging power at the same time.

That said my panels from March to October contribute significantly to reduce my electricity consumption.Do have a think about initial outlay vs savings tho because 4k buys an awful lot of electricity certainly much more than a Phev would consume in its lifetime?
January 28, 2022 at 6:03 pm #175562Ian how reliable is your system, our real concern if they cause any problems with the roof

IanReally pleased with my system after 5 years. No hardware or software issues at all.
7Mw produced each year with my estimated saving of £1500 per annum.
Now considering a battery but they are very expensive with low payback.
January 29, 2022 at 2:36 pm #175617That not bad on a 6.72 kW system, we are looking a 4.4 kW system

Ian<p style=”text-align: left;”>I was advised to go as many panels as I could fit so I could hoover all the sunlight that was available. It feels like it was good advice.

BrydoOscarmax I’ve had our 4kw system for about 11 years. It generates about 3000 – 3200 kWh per year. The inverter packed in two week before my five year warranty expired so got it replaced for free and the new one is six years plus old and still ? working.
I got in at the very start of the solar panel introduction so I get paid by the government for every kWh produced. I currently receive about £1600 yearly.
I suggest you get a system as large as your roof can provide as you are going to use much more electricity when you go full BEV.

We use 4200 kWh per year approximately 30% off peak charging our PHEV, leaving approximately 2,940 kWh, we are a little further south in Staffordshire, they are estimating a conservative 3300 kW for a 4.4 kW system , and yes we would love a full EV

BrydoOscarmax my panels are only 11% efficient so I have 16 panels on the roof, I think. The efficiency of the panels have increased massively since I got mine and 20% efficiency is available. A company in Oxford, Oxford PV I think they are called are achieving mid ti high 20’ but not sure how much they cost or if they are available but worth investing.
January 29, 2022 at 4:49 pm #175625Brydo I have been offered 2 options LG panel 4.5 kWp approximately 20 % or JA 18.6% 4,44 kWp, the difference is £1200, they have suggested in the short term I would be better of with the cheaper JA panels ?

BrydoYes i would agree.
January 29, 2022 at 5:54 pm #175628a few homes around me have panels. not sure how effective they are up here, as we dont get loads of sun and i dont know the folk to ask, but i doubt they are as good as that. obviously they work in daylight etc but are better in full sun.

January 30, 2022 at 11:08 am #175659Apparently if you look on Octopus Energy site, you cannot be on the Octopus Go tariff if you are a feed in tariff (5.5 pence kW), whoever if you dig a bit deep you can ? but Octopus will only pay 3 pence kW

BrydoOscarmax have you any warranty details on the panels and inverter?

IanOscarmax I am with Octopus for gas and electricity and get my Fit paid by Eon.
I have Octopus Go which charges me import between 00.30 and 04.30 at 5p per Kw and 15.89p at any other time
<p style=”text-align: left;”>For export Octopus pay me 4.1p.
February 2, 2022 at 10:16 am #175875Oscarmax have you any warranty details on the panels and inverter?
The first company to be honest was a joke, they have forwarded the specification of the works, component and breakdown of cost, 5 year warranty, very badly designed and poor quality component., plus they were expensive.
The company at this stage I may go ahead with has glowing local reference in our area, They have been trading as a solar company since 2012 I have checked their account with Companies house, they are offering a 10 year warranty on all parts and labour (backed by the HIES).
The J A solar panels 12 years, LG solar panels 25 years

My Octopus peak rate at present is 13.92 kW, once I am out of contract their present market rate is 21.5p kW, I have heard rumour in April this will rise to 31,5p kW

Brydo@oscarmax I assume your inverter has a 10year warranty from the manufacturer. This is important as the inverter is likely to be the very thing to break down.
I have LG panels and “touch wood” have had no problems with them. I did look up reports on the JA panels and, although they only offer 12 years warranty, they do get a good reputation.

I have heard gas 6p kW that’s a 48% rise, then possibly another increase in October/November

BrydoOscarmax great news, welcome to the ever increasing number of solar panel users. I meant to mention it before, but forgot, there is an optimal angle the panels should be set at i think its 22 degrees, i wouldnt worry too much if you cant achieve as doesnt make a great deal of difference but worth mentioning.
