The place to share what you’re doing, thinking, planning on a daily basis, with a group of sociable friends and acquaintances.

Notably the window boxes and baskets of flowers which so brighten up the bricks and mortar. New discovery this Spring are these hessian, woven hanging bags for flowers. Look really good and cheaper than baskets. Also, since they need only a hook and not a big bracket, they’ll go places where baskets can’t.

Next job is to have a go at making them up myself rather than buying fully done from garden centre. Moreover, they are quite a weight when filled and need seriously big hooks. Took a number 10 masonry drill and a lot of luck, but I got them hung (relatively) easily.
May 17, 2022 at 10:30 am #185456I love a hanging basket, it’s the constant watering that I can’t cope with.

May 17, 2022 at 12:13 pm #185462I’ve been unwell for the last few months and spent a lot of time sat in my bedroom looking out at this beautiful view. The upper garden is coming into bloom and the colours are becoming rich and vibrant.

May 17, 2022 at 5:49 pm #185494What a simply beautiful garden, POPS. Hope you’re feeling better. A view like that would certainly help.
May 17, 2022 at 6:16 pm #185496Thank you Tharg. I hope I’m on the mend, but I tend to be taking “two steps forward and one step backwards” at the moment ?.
My grandchildren were down in the bottom garden playing football this morning (early before going to school) and they met one of our local deer face to face. He wasn’t spooked at all as he and his friends are regular visitors. He just wandered slowly off the pitch.
We had a family “Eurovision Song Contest party” on Saturday. The weather was glorious and our football pitch got well used, there were trampoline competitions and sun loungers and hammocks under some 90 year old trees, for those of us who wanted to join in lazily! We had a sunny barbecue on the rear patio …. followed the sun round for drinks in the front garden, and then moved up to the roof terrace as it gets the last of the evening sun, for a further relaxing tipple and chat. One of my daughter in laws said “I would happily pay for entrance to this magical garden”. That comment made my day.
Sorry to waffle on, but as you can probably tell I love my surroundings.
May 17, 2022 at 6:36 pm #185497Who maintains that glorious garden Pops.

We get an ‘expert’ to come in a couple of times a year to do some pruning and cutting back generally. I’ve bought some quality petrol driven tools to speed up the process. I did some hedge trimming, patio cleaning and cut some of the level lawns last summer, but I can’t do any of that at the moment,
May 17, 2022 at 8:16 pm #185504Simply breathtaking Pops 🙂
May 17, 2022 at 8:24 pm #185505Thank you Kezo.
May 18, 2022 at 8:48 am #185516@wmcforum Yup. Watering can be a pain if the items are hung up high. The baskets sometimes get unhooked and put on floor. The hessian bag things have two hooks each – a lower one for watering, a process which takes a while: fill up, wait to soak down, fill up again etc. until water is right down the bag.
@POPS Have to get help with our garden too: can still do watering/mowing and the like. But anything involving kneeling/crouching or ladders is just impossible. Your Eurovision bash sounds a delight. Suspect, though, that your family could probably produce some better music that Eurovision. That said, however, I thought this year’s efforts had some passable songs, if you can ignore all the fancy costumes, glitz and light-shows, fireworks. Particularly liked the Norwegian entry. Well, how can you not like a song with the lyric, Don’t let the wolf eat my grandma. Give the wolf a banana.?May 18, 2022 at 11:37 am #185528I’m afraid that my gardening contribution is currently nil Tharg. Last summer I was able to do a little on the basis of doing a tiny bit and then sitting down before doing a little bit more. In the end my son thanked me for trying but suggested I sit and watch him work as it would be quicker and more productive. Balance issues mean that I can’t now safely use the walk behind mower as a Zimmer frame, lol.
I’ve just bought a new pressure washer with almost 4000psi of pressure and extra long hose, as the house has a lot of stone paved areas. I’ve even had a couple more outside taps fitted to allow greater coverage. That’s my role now Tharg …. making sure that others have the right tools to speed up a big job ?.
The Eurovision party made for a long and tiring day, but it was brilliant. My grandchildren all wanted the Norwegian entry to win and couldn’t understand why it didn’t (apart from my eldest grandson who was entranced by the Spanish singer’s gyrations!) Two of my grandchildren are singing in Birmingham tomorrow night at a large event called “Young Voices UK”. It’s at the Resorts World Arena, so the next generation of singers are there for our future family Eurovision song bid! ?

Thus far, am still able to do it – it is the only “long-distance” walking I can get. Tried to do a simple short stroll a week or so back. Managed nearly half a mile but it took me over an hour and an extra hit of Tramadol. Still hurt like hell.
So pleased that we were not alone is liking the Norsk entry. Quite aside from being beautifully bonkers, there was something about the music structure that was intriguing. All sorts of elements in there: shouted blues, bit of jazz (NOLA?) and a wonderful mix of languages (or maybe my hearing aids let me down).May 19, 2022 at 1:28 pm #185648Just wondered if anyone any has ever seen one like it before and knows the name/type for it, apart from ladybird 🙂

We still see the odd red lady but as you say not as often. I did check on google different types of ladybirds in the UK but nothing come up to quite fit the bill in terms of spots or colour witch looked more olive green with the naked eye.
May 19, 2022 at 3:19 pm #185660I’ve just spent a pleasant ten minutes or so on google images and can’t find anything quite like your “spotting” keso. I did learn that they are actually called Coccinellae, but I will continue to call them Ladybirds, lol.
