There is a lot of knowledge amongst us, I exclude myself.
The COVID 19 is dominating the news:
How worried should we be?
Will this be Spanish flu proportions or just another contained outbreak as SARS and MERS were?
Oh – and when will we start to see ‘Just in time’ manufacturing suffer?

Thanks. I switched to IE and it was fine. My PC is Windows 10. Delivery is almost impossible but click and collect is a bit easier

ThargHi, fwippers. Great! Glad you got it to work somehow. Wish I could click and collect but that is just too dangerous. Mrs Tharg, all 70+ yrs and 6 stone of her is just too vulnerable for me to risk getting this bug. Cannot go into any shop. Finally managed to get an Asda delivery last night; secret is to wait until a few seconds after midnight which, it seems, is when the shop puts up new slots. Still pretty much hit-and-miss though.
April 2, 2020 at 8:59 am #110878Went to my big Tesco 8.30am this morning well stacked shelves markers on floor etc
April 2, 2020 at 10:13 am #110892Vinalspin unfortunately that appears to be untrue, evidence from South Korea appears to show that you can indeed catch it again with patient’s who had it, getting it again within weeks. Also evidence shows wearing a mask does help but the need for front line NHS staff to get a constant supply has resulted in the general public being told a mask is of no use.
@brydo, yet again a bit of media hype, if it is possible to catch it again it would be extremely rare as you would still have antibodies flooding your system to fight it immediately.April 2, 2020 at 1:58 pm #110907Hi, fwippers. Very good news. We managed to secure a Tesco delivery for a fortnight and an Iceland one too for this week. It’s very hit and miss. There does need to be a proper system so the 1.5m can have priority access. I hope to be able to release our click and collect. That worked well, drove up to collection point. Groceries put behind car and my wife out them in the boot.
April 2, 2020 at 7:36 pm #110925Clap for NHS tonight 8pm

Thargfwippers – glad you got a slot. ‘Tis a bitch, though, trying to book. I so agree that a better system for govt classified “vulnerable” people. Right now the process is shyte. It tells you that its algorithm will decide if you go on list. Next thing that happens is algorithm send you a msg saying NHS will decide. Then nothing.
Like everything the (so-called) government is doing, the system is wrong; it does not work and nothing is being done to put it right.
April 3, 2020 at 10:17 am #110956I’m reminded of a book I read about social history in WWII. It took two years from the declaration of war for health, welfare and food support to be developed and matured for the UK population, despite planning being started two years previously.
Are we not expecting too much in a few short weeks?
April 3, 2020 at 10:33 am #110961
brydo@vinalspin if you watched the Health Secretary’s update last night you would have seen that it is likely that some can be reinfected. I got my info from an interview of a South Korean doctor who has seen it with his own eye’s. He also said that masks were essential to reduce infection numbers. One look at south Koreas infection and death rates will show they are doing something right.
April 3, 2020 at 10:37 am #110963Donald Rumsfeld once said:
“Reports that say that something hasn’t happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones.”
I think that’s about where we are.
April 3, 2020 at 11:30 am #110969
bfoandcI’m not sure that we are ‘expecting too much’ over some of the issues especially where choices were made.
The Govt chose not to follow the World Health Organisation pandemic response plan.
The Govt chose to reject medical requests to have a stockpile of protective equipment in case of a pandemic.
The Govt did not participate in the EU group-sourcing of ventilators and have given 3 different reasons why it didn’t.
The Govt chose to have minimal testing and we are massively behind other countries.
There are more such issues I could list but these are all issues that lie squarely with Govt.
April 3, 2020 at 11:39 am #110971Did you vote Labour by any chance ?
April 3, 2020 at 12:11 pm #110976
bfoandcI don’t usually reveal how I voted as I think a secret vote should be that. I can say that I’ve never been a Conservative supporter. However what I’ve listed are actually more factual than party political as such. It is surely unforgivable to not provide necessary safety equipment to those actually doing the practical tasks of looking after the sick. I really don’t think this issue and others are matters for debate.
April 3, 2020 at 12:18 pm #110977Some can be and likely to be is just speculation and covering the bases as they have no idea, I saw the interview and the other reports on the same woman, she didn’t pass on the infection to any other people and showed no symptoms, also the results came back different 3 times, I would hardly call that proof that we can all catch it again, where are the figures for people that have caught it more than once?
April 3, 2020 at 12:43 pm #110980
Brydo@vinalspin I have no idea about any woman the interview I am talking about only had a male carrying out the interview and the male doctor.
I prefer to listen to the people who have experience of the virus rather than those who are commenting on it but at the end of the day neither of us has any more information than we get from what we watch and read so we both could be wrong lol.
April 3, 2020 at 12:50 pm #110982I couldn’t agree more, between us then the count is 2, not exactly damning proof that we’re all going to get it twice.
Problem is the lies being told on all fronts to protect bad or slow decision making.
The various bodies currently studying just whether it can be caught a 2nd time are all suggesting it is extremely unlikely (we’re talking lottery odds here) but until all the evidence is in none are going to put their neck on the block, it’s all political bull.
April 3, 2020 at 12:50 pm #110983
ThargMenorca Mike – I totally agree with bfoandc – the facts speak for themselves, regardless of the political party. Boris and pals are interested only in using this crisis to score political points to boost their popularity and, thus, their power. Only other motivation is to be able to prove that, whatever Bad Things happen, then it is not their fault. Boris was on TV saying that hitting the target on testing was going to solve the whole crisis. How stupid does he think we are? Solving crisis involves finding a vaccine, supplying ventilators/breathing machines, getting enough protective kit, etc. etc. Then we’ve got to get the economy back working again (God help us with this lot in charge). And doing some real science to make sure it cannot happen again – won’t happen because there’s no money in it.
To see how to do it properly, look at Austria. The reacted instantly; shut everything down at beginning of March. They listened to their scientists and engineers – i.e. the people who actually know about the problem and know how to fix it. Not the Powers That Be who just want to cover their backsides. Austria’s figures now show infections and deaths falling consistently. Moreover, the Austrian death-rate as percentage of population is half that of the UK. So, will we listen to our scientists and engineers? Well, put that question to Boris or one of his chums and see if you get a straight answer.
And I don’t vote Labour. Don’t vote for any of these bullying thugs who are controlling us.
April 3, 2020 at 12:59 pm #110986It’s hard not to agree but it wouldn’t have mattered which party was in power as they all play the same game, always have, always will!
April 3, 2020 at 3:46 pm #110997
ThargVinalspin – I completely, wholeheartedly agree. I reckon that Corbyn would have made an even bigger mess than Boris – would have spent a good few weeks fighting with colleagues before even noticing we had a problem! The greed for power and prestige is the driving engine of all the political parties. Sadly, it also infects most of our organisations and industry: those running things care only that they stay in power. Actually making things or doing stuff is secondary and to be avoided in case it goes wrong and you get the blame.
April 4, 2020 at 12:52 am #111018
PhiljbIt’s the same with every crisis, always someone is to blame and heads roll, with a golden handshake, ministerial car and cash towards moving and redecorating their home, new kitchen, bathroom, furniture, clothes.
Chuck in a nice free holiday. Then claim a final salary pension in a few years time.
who’d be a politician lol
April 4, 2020 at 9:15 am #111036
ThargYup. And when they’ve used up the golden handshake, they’ll use their secret handshake to pop up in some other role and screw up another bit of our lives.
April 4, 2020 at 11:42 am #111055I have always said MP’s should be paid normal wages without all the perks and expenses and only those that don’t want the job should be allowed to do it.
