Hi all, we ordered a Volvo XC40 in December – the dealer told us it will be delivered next month. We added a 360 camera to the spec and the dealer insisted on a £250 deposit which we paid. We have now changed our mind on the car. I saw the message from @Glos Guy saying we need to cancel with the dealer which we will do so on Monday. Just wondering if we should expect any issues with the deposit being returned? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
hi soul777, would you mind sharing why you cancelled your order for the xc40? And which car you’re going for? As I also have an order for the same car but in two minds regards fuel efficiency. Kind regards
@Glos Guy
In several conversations with BMW (Park Lane), I expressed my concern regarding the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. However, they firmly asserted that 25 miles per gallon is an acceptable figure for city driving. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoy the car and am willing to pay a premium for its premium driving experience and comfort. Consequently, I opted for the XC40, as I believe it offers a similar driving dynamics.
As you mentioned, an electric vehicle (EV) would be the most suitable option for me. However, my current circumstances would make an EV more inconvenient for me. Even if the Volvo achieves an estimated 33 miles per gallon, I would be content with my decision.
For those who already own this car, what mpg are you guys getting on the xc40 black edition? I’m hoping it will be better than my bmw x1 which gives me 26mpg (city driving) which is pretty much start & stop. it’s crazy to think with today’s high level technology we get such low mpg.
How about the positives about this car? I believe the exterior looks stunning. Many have stated that the drive is comfortable and great driving position.

Hello fellow Volvo enthusiasts,
I am writing to share my recent experience with the Volvo XC40 Black Edition I recently ordered and will keep you updated on my journey and experiences.
Upon entering the showroom, I was immediately struck by the striking appearance of the Black Edition. It stood out among the other vehicles on display, including the fully electric EX30, the XC40, and the XC90. The all-black interior exuded a sense of luxury and sophistication.
The Plus trim package offers a range of impressive features that I believe will enhance the driving experience, particularly in urban environments. The lightweight steering wheel and ease of maneuverability were particularly noteworthy. Additionally, the reasonable boot size and the convenient shopping bag holder were practical additions.
I am confident that I have made the correct decision, as there are numerous options available within the SUV sector. Good luck to us all and happy new year

My source at BMW tells me that the X1 PHEV is to join the Motability scheme in Quarter 1, but the AP is ‘from £6,999’. No details on models or included packs (if any).
Glow guy, that’s interesting news! We have a common ground which is our passion for the beautiful X1 haha. However, I had to make a logical decision & finally ordered the Volvo xc40 black edition. I Had a 20 min test drive and decided it’s a comfortable drive, high seating position, similar size and build compared to my current x1. The plus trim has pleasing features such as rear heated seats and blind spot mirror assistance. Time will tell if I’ve made the right decision. I would have liked to visit Mercedes but my health isn’t great to keep galavanting and wanted to order before new prices are released as I predict higher AP’s. how is the Tucson treating you?

Dear all, my apologies for the late reply as I’ve been unwell and struggling to get my health back, anyway straight back to topic, I sincerely thank you all for your contribution and I have carefully considered all the factors you pin pointed and will continue to remember each point before my final decision. Equally I hope that I can also contribute with my findings which may help someone on this platform.
As I mentioned before I live in the city and I don’t feel ready for a full electric car, currently there are no restrictions on petrol cars in my borough and I hope to stick to petrol or self charging hybrid until the full electric car industry has a solid foundation in terms of charging stations and efficiency, I’m not ready for milage anxiety.
Today I randomly walked into Renault showroom(Enfield). while my 30mins visit, surprisingly not one single representative offered help enough though it was not busy, they just kept walking pass while I was exploring, where as my experience with bmw was always complimented via meet and greet in a polite and friendly manner, again maybe this is me over thinking.
I tried to use my time efficiently to analyse the Australe as it was advised by many on here. Compared to my X1, it definitely was more spacious, rear seat space was one of the biggest I’ve ever seen in a car. The interior felt premium and had a lot of high tech. The lumber massage feature was enjoyable but it did feel uncomfortable after a few mins . Boot space was not as big as the x1 but it was enough for a wheelchair. When you open the boot it makes a loud sound three times which is totally unnecessary but guess it’s helpful for some. Viewing angles from drivers position was good and you can rest both your arms on each side of the car. Both the touch screens were responsive and high quality resolution. Overall I was impressed with the quality and would say that the austral has made my shortlist, alongside xc40 black edition. I guess I still need to test drive both and come to a conclusion.
@Glos Guy you’ve also put the Tucson in my mind but I’m not a fan of the exterior design, I need to give it a chance. My x1 has 15,000 miles on the clock so I could look to extend for another 2 yrs and order a new car when I’m confident which car to go for but equally I have a feeling the deposits for Volvo cars will increase in January and I will miss the opportunity as currently it’s very affordable.

Finding mirror covers in the clour you want isn’t always easy, as they typically come black and painted to the colour of the car, unless you can come across used one in the colour of your car. Fitting carbon coloured covers shouldn’t cause an issue, as long as both are replaced and match. I have done the same in the past but, with gloss black ones. Just make sure the ones you choose are the correct ones for your cars model year
thank you for your reply, did you still get the good condition bonus even though the colours didn’t match?
I don’t think I’d bother getting them painted. Realistically if you’re handing it back to a different dealer/manufacturer when you get your next car they’ll not be bothered as long as one isn’t missing, the car will be most likely going off to get auctioned somewhere else.
thank you for your reply, last resort I may have to get a different colour cover case
A few years ago I had a similar problem. The day before I was due to return my Volvo, another driver clipped my wing mirror and smashed it to pieces. Clearly no time to get insurance involved, but I spoke to Motability who just told me to return the car as planned and I wouldn’t be charged. This was ten years ago, so I can’t remember if there was a good condition bonus or not.
thank you for your reply, that’s my predicament, good condition bonus is my priority therefore I don’t want to take the risk and make sure I am entitled
If it’s just the clip on cover you can get a couple of black carbon effect ones so both mirrors look the same? £11.99 for the pair on Ebay, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204556532060
Wouldn’t that cause an issue when I return the vehicle back to the dealership as it’s different colour?

Rico – thank you, I will look into it, I’m just frightened to move away from bmw and regret my decision as the vehicle is premium and there service has been amazing over the last few years
Glos guy- thank you for your honest input, your totally right as x1 is a great car and I’m in two minds if I should stick to the order. I never speed and drive mainly on eco mode but still averaging 25mpg mainly in the city. A quick question, what difference is there in the facelift? Regards
25mpg isn’t great I assume?
thank you struth i will look into it, I’ll keep you posted, regards
I’m not certain but around 35mpg-40mpg. yes I don’t really want to go out and look for charging spots. self charging would be ideal. my friend has a Toyota Prius, she said she gets £10 petrol and does around 150 miles as its hybrid self charging, that’s a major difference compared to my x1
