Hi, not new to the forum but cannot recall username or password so have registered again! The forum is as always forever helpful.
Ive just signed up for a Volvo xc40 petrol automatic soft hybrid in Pearl white after a great test drive and excellent service from ‘Ben’ at Crawley showroom. Was a little tempted by the pale blue but it seemed a little too flat for me and I always love white! Felt very informed, valued and happy with our choice. May date given but I’m not banking on that but was assured to contact him anytime for updates. Seamless application accompanied by coffees.
Currently have a Peugeot 3008 and will be happy to wave it goodbye but my other half not as much so! ? - CreatorTopic

rosie54 I could well be joining you with the black addition..
Ive not seen one yet only pics, maybe might pop back to Volvo as when I went in Nov 24 it wasn’t there, everything but, the xc30 I think looks amazing for what it is..
And yes a Happy New Year and good luck for 2025 🎉🎉

according to Honest John, the B4 averages 37.7mpg
https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/volvo/xc40-2018/b4
It is on the low side when compared to some of the competitors but we figured the safety side that Volvo offers outweighs the mediocre mileage.
Be good to hear thoughts from owners here though..
January 1, 2025 at 5:40 pm #295595I get 27mpg-ish urban and 34mpg-ish extra urban. On a run it’s possible to get late 30s but that’s as good as it gets for me.
January 1, 2025 at 6:08 pm #295597i have the juke hybrid and that gets well over 50mpg even though most of my journies are 20 miles or less.
even the countryman i had before got over 40+.
January 1, 2025 at 6:18 pm #295598Just had a word with my wife and we are going to test drive a Honda HRV. It’s back on the scheme at £999 AP, down from £1,999 when it was on last in q3. Real mpg according to honest John, it averages 57.9mpg. That’s a big difference to the Volvo.
We still haven’t had confirmation of the exact order with spec we have chosen from our Volvo dealership despite asking a couple of times. We did check with Motability and they cannot help.

Are they 200bhp though?
There is a trade-off for having a fast, heavy and unaerodynamic vehicle.
I don’t do all that many miles and the AP was low so it doesn’t work out too badly. I’m probably spending an extra £10 a month on fuel compared to my old vehicle.

Do value Adult occupant, Child occupant, vunerable road user, safety assist or a good level across the board most when looking at safety?
The XC4o, scores 97% adult, 87% child, 71% vunerable road users and safety assist 76% (total 341/400)
The Qashqai (inc E-Power), scores 91% adult, 91% child, 70% vunerable road users and 95% safety assist (total 347/400)
Both cars gain 5 star Euro N Cap which is what matters imo however, the Qashqai E-Power will easily do 50+mpg. FWIW the XC90 scored 352/400.
January 1, 2025 at 7:44 pm #295604@kezo – we did have the Qashqai Epower on the shortlist and did take it on a test drive but my wife preferred the drive experience of the Volvo.
Whilst we were waiting for the test drive, we took a good look around a Epower Qashqai model they had in the showroom which had a piece of door trim missing in what was at the time a brand new delivery mileage showroom car! I must look into the euro ncap of the Honda – thanks for your reply. Appreciated.January 1, 2025 at 7:52 pm #295605@kezo – we did have the Qashqai Epower on the shortlist and did take it on a test drive but my wife preferred the drive experience of the Volvo. I’ve just posted this elsewhere but please think long and hard about the ex30, I am very close to returning my car because it’s unreliable and borderline dangerous.
January 1, 2025 at 9:42 pm #295609Is the MPG really as bad as I’ve read online?
we had one for 5 years and our MPG was never over 29/32mpg. So yeh, depends on the model though. I would recommend it for the drive experience alone, not the MPG.
January 1, 2025 at 10:14 pm #295611Just came back from visiting a friend who recommended the Volvo to us. They have had multiple Volvos over the years and currently have a xc60 phev. He just mentioned the driving experience @crippleddad and said we would love it especially on motorways.
Intrigued on the issues you’ve had with the EX30. Can you share more please? Thanks. Are you thinking of an early return as you mentioned it’s ’borderline dangerous’ ? Anything to do with all the mad lane assist tech they have?
January 1, 2025 at 10:46 pm #295612@crippleddad sounds like a nightmare that ex30 (I keep calling xc30🙄) what’s the problems with just out of interest, I just liked the look of it, perfect for the wife.
I wouldn’t have one bit small for me, as is our xc40, but I manage.
Im not ready for electric only cars yet tbh.January 1, 2025 at 11:22 pm #295616I’ll list the issues.
1. The car doesn’t have a key per se, so you have to wait for the car to wake up and activate during the wonderful British weather. I was aware of this before the purchase – but it’s comically bad at whether it works.
2. The lane assist is the dangerous part in which it can see phantom vehicles.
3. The entire display can be frozen mid journey and can’t be rectified without pulling over doing hardware button pressing on the steering wheel
4. The ‘key not found’ issue, is that the car will somehow lose track of the key or the card and simply not start, fixed by a reboot of the car.
5. Window wipers (this is a new one) window wipers did not work and I had to drive manually flipping the stick up and down (another issue. But nit a huge one)
6. One off issues = The app routinely fails to connect to the car, so you can’t precondition. Heating – this feels flight black magic, it’s impossible to get the cabin to a warm temperature until 20/30 mins. There is no way to rapidly heat the car, thus must be a limitation of battery cars.
i highly recommend visiting the ex30 subreddit and just watching the various issues. I’ll be very surprised if I have this car in 12 months, I’m not too fussed by all these issues because I suspect they are all software fixes. But they say death by a thousand cuts and this feels like it
January 1, 2025 at 11:33 pm #295619Wow. That’s not good at all @crippleddad I think you have strong grounds for an early cancellation- it will cost you £250 but you will get your pro rata AP payment back to then help fund your next car.
January 2, 2025 at 1:33 am #295621Volvo has delayed the release of the EX30 a couple of times due to software issue’s
A recall was issued on the 10-05-2024 due to a safety issue regarding the screen and Key @crippleddad
January 2, 2025 at 8:42 am #295628January 14, 2025 at 11:45 am #296197Finally got confirmation of my Volvo XC40 build order from North West London Volvo today.
Car will be delivered in March. The sales person said that they have 19 XC40 Motability orders for delivery in March!
January 17, 2025 at 5:55 pm #296303For those who already own this car, what mpg are you guys getting on the xc40 black edition? I’m hoping it will be better than my bmw x1 which gives me 26mpg (city driving) which is pretty much start & stop. it’s crazy to think with today’s high level technology we get such low mpg.

Did you ever get BMW to check if your X1 had a fault? I appreciate that I do very little stop-start city driving, but I averaged over 40 mpg out of my 4WD 2.0i petrol X1 auto over 3 years. Quite a difference! I presume you don’t have the facility to charge off road, as with your sort of driving an EV would probably be your best bet? Volvo petrol cars aren’t known for being particularly fuel efficient so you might be going out of the frying pan into the fryer! Very few ICE cars are going to deliver great mpg in heavy stop-start traffic.

A self charging hybrid may be your best option they perform well in stop drive driving.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
January 17, 2025 at 8:23 pm #296316Sounds about right
2 ltr 190 bhp wot else did you expect
Now on i4 bmw i4
cheap to run especially charging at home
January 17, 2025 at 8:30 pm #296318Sounds about right 2 ltr 190 bhp wot else did you expect
Exactly the same car as mine though, and I got over 40 mpg, so I can understand the disappointment. By contrast, I was pleasantly surprised with mine as I didn’t choose it for good fuel economy – that just turned out to be an added bonus!
January 17, 2025 at 9:50 pm #296325I get low-20s in traffic, early 30s extra-urban and late 30s on a run. Dreadful mpg but then it’s a 2 litre petrol engine delivering just shy of 200bhp and driving a heavy SUV.
If MPG is a massive consideration then you don’t want a 2 litre petrol engined SUV.
