Rhodgie I enjoy driving and would happily drive a few hundred miles for a great deal. If the deal is good enough I suppose you could always stay overnight and make a weekend of it.

It all depends on the deal, if the Glasgow dealer could have got me the colour & spec I wanted I probably would have ordered from here and paid the extra £250 as it would have been easier to nip in and see them, I’d have still done the day trips down south though 😂

We had planned to pick up the Ioniq and head south to York & Harrogate for a few days but that didn’t happen as a few days later we took it to Brighton for a week then the next weekend up to Durness.

Everybody needs to do their own calculations to see whether it works for them, but I like driving so drove to Brechin to see the MG in a particular colour before ordering it from Frasers in Falkirk  😁

I went from Glasgow to Gateshead to get my Ioniq 6 cause the Evans Halshaw dealership was matching the £750 from motability.

With my 2 previous EVs I’ve seen deals on offer and phoned around to see if any nearby dealers would match it (or get close enough to make the travelling not worth it?) and both times they did saving £1200 on a Leaf & £800 on an MG5. This time they only offered £500 off but only on stock cars that weren’t colour or spec I wanted.

So to answer your question there is no set amount I’d need to save. It’d depend on whether the amount saved justified the time and expense incurred (I went down 3 times cause wanted to check in with the hand control fitrers) £50 probably not, £500 definitely 😁

Also to add I like driving and visiting places so none of my trips to Gateshead were a chore, I had a day out using various different routes that included visiting a dealership.

Why would I go lease privately I mean this is the whole point of mobility to provide to the disabled… private leasing or pcp is nothing to do with this, this is a charity at the end of the day and charging that amount to a disabled person is just ridiculous

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make… it sounds like your bitter because you want the £8k car for £0

Why don’t you tell us some of the cars you’ve already looked at and why you think you need it 🤔

Go look at buying or leasing those cars privately, remembering to include insurance, servicing, tyres etc and then having to worry about being charged £’s for every scratch or stone chip or interior damage (from wheelchairs?) then decide if it’s worth it.

No idea about the metal composition but I do think you should follow the technicians advice and do an occasional bit of hard braking if that concerned about it.

Can’t say I’ve read too many comments about the state of the brakes and those I have read have all given the same answer, to do some occasional heavy braking.

I have found a way around the problem which is to disable the stop/start system or to use the sport mode and there is then no lag. I suppose I can live with this because apart from this problem it is a lovely car.
Kind of rules out your dangerous to drive argument?  Definitely speak to the garage first and then maybe try Motability but I don’t think your assessment is valid, they’ll say it’s a characteristic of the vehicle.

I would disagree, in my opinion this is essential, essentially with ALL the functionality in a lot of cars only being through a central touchscreen, I can easily assess how easy a car will be to use when driving if I can briefly sit in it with the screen active. I’d rather not waste my time going to see a car that looks ok, but when you turn it on the car is just unusable.

#paulbuk  you can disagree all you like, that is your choice.

The dash might be the best or worst in the world to use but that’s a secondary issue if you can’t get in or out of it easily, if the seats aren’t comfortable, if a wheelchair or a hoist don’t go in the boot or the back seat, if it just looks plug ugly… seeing lots of different vehicles all in the one place let’s you filter these choices down to one’s you’d like to test drive.

And at a car show, would you really want the cars to be drivable by anybody and everybody in a hall full of slow moving disabled people.

but for EVs – there are no emissions, so what’s the danger in letting a customer turn on the ignition?

The danger is that customers are either idiots or accompanied by idiots who have no idea what they are doing and are likely to kill half the people there 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I always thought the event was to let you sit in them to judge the in/out access and see the boot for storage, talk to the dealers to ask questions, to be able to directly compare different vehicles all in the one area without visiting multiple dealers, seeing the dash lit up won’t give you much info on how it is to use…. once you’ve narrowed down your search there, then you can go round showrooms to check out how the aircon works 👍

Me and my wife have previously discussed this exact situation… I told her if it happens I’ll be dead so sounds like you problem, maybe you shouldn’t have spent so much on the kitchen 😂😂😂

Seriously though we’ve tried to keep some money saved so the survivor would have enough to keep going until it can all be sorted out, plus she’s got family and friends nearby who could give her a lift or she could borrow their car if needed. She does still have her own car at the moment but we don’t really need two cars so it’ll probably go before I snuff it 🤞 ⚰️ ☹️

Hi All, Not sure if this has been asked before but has anyone ever been able to pay extra for a higher spec or trim that’s not available on the scheme? For example the normal Audi q3 s line 35 etc being changed to the sport back version? If anyone has experience with this, with any dealership could you advise, what did you get and how much extra you may have paid please?

I think there would also be an issue with insurance if you got a car that wasn’t officially on the motability list 🤔

@Ele  James and Jonathan are still connected through YouTube as they occasionally link up on a video, they done a lot in the passed that are worth watching, like driving the length of the country in early Leafs. I still follow both of them especially as I used to have an MG5 and James is right about it being a great workhorse.  I don’t think he has much to do with Reflex now that Jonathan is retired plus he’s got his own job to do.

The business eco-cars still operates but Jonathan sold it and retired, he still does a lot of YouTube videos related to EVs and is currently in southern Spain after driving there from Orkney in his Kona.

They will definitely get you a good deal and are a reputable company.

I’m not related to them but have met them at different EV shows.

The 327 miles range will be what the manufacturer thinks it’ll do so you can forget that 🫣

Your 100-0% 140 miles, how are you calculating that? Have you actually driven those miles or is it a couple of short trips and extrapolated the range from there?

At a quoted 327 mile range you’d probably get about 275 on a single long trip, if you only do a 5 mile commute twice a day in this cold weather then yes 140 miles might be what the car thinks it’ll do ☹️

Can I also say to check your tyre pressures cause they’ll have dropped in the cold and that can have a big effect on range.

My Ioniq 6 is getting about 260 miles just now in 30 mile sections.

I’ve got the JG hand controls on my Ioniq 6 (had them in my last couple of cars too). So far they’ve been fine, yes sits a bit below the steering column but hasn’t been an issue for me or other able bodied drivers, unlike my previous MG5 where my wife hated them being in her way.

I’ve no complaints about them but I also haven’t seen any other manufacturers set up to compare against.

I didn’t pay any extra for these but I do know that some places will charge and some won’t… 🤷‍♂️ don’t know why, maybe down to individual fitter having to travel or the company looking for more business

I knew they’d changed and tightened the rules but not by how much, good to hear they clamped down on the abuse… I’d heard a few horror stories about how some folk had been exploiting the scheme including some paralympic athletes.

The criteria for VAT exemption is very strict. It only applies to brand new cars, you have to have permanent adaptations fitted prior to registration and you always had to be a wheelchair user. Criteria may have changed, as they tightened up on it as some people were buying VAT free and then selling at a profit. The info can be found on the HMRC website.

Things must have changed cause you only had to be disabled but not necessarily a wheelchair user, any adaptation counted towards getting the VAT off (even a steering ball?) but you needed to be able to justify it to HMRC.  It can (could?) also be applied to a used car but only on the dealers profit margin that gets paid to the Gov. So for example if a dealer makes £1k on a car, then deducts his expenses of say £500, then you could claim the VAT back off the other £500? I bought a bike that way once 😁

Because of it being abused, you could littery buy a new car every day if you had the money… they changed it to one every 3 years?

As I said thing have changed and it’s been a few years for me but one of my friends still buys a new car every 3 years.

When I return my car in three years I’ll remember to leave it until the last possible moment before I even contemplate looking for another car.

You don’t need to do that, you’ll automatically get the GCB after the years 🤷‍♂️

What’s your idea of a long trip and do you have any disability that would make rapid charging away from a problem?

I’ve got the Ioniq 6 (my 4th EV) and I’ve done Glasgow to Brighton as well as plenty of other long trips, I’m now on 10k miles after 4½ months so it’ll be closer to 30k a year than the 20k limit 😱🫣

I’m also a wheelchair user and while some rapid chargers aren’t great for access if you stick to the main hubs like Ionity, Gridserve, MFG, some Tesla ones then it’s usually (🤞) fine.

Seems pretty accurate for my Ioniq 6, a lot depends on the trips you use it for… if it’s all short trips then it uses a lot of energy heating the cabin but do a longer run and it’s easier to maintain the temp at a level setting. Same as in an ICE but you pay less attention to the losses cause it’s got a larger range to start with.

I looked at it last year but as a wheelchair user I found the door opening far too small to get in/out and then to try and dismantle my chair and lift it over me and onto the rear seats.

I went for the Hyundai Ioniq 6 instead  and it’s been better in every way… range, size, tech, comfort, AP cost etc although the AP for that has risen again so not as big a gap now.

However if you prefer a badge and really want a BEV then it is a good car if you can get in/out of it

What they could do is have no difference in the AP between a manual and an automatic car… different trim levels have different APs, different AP if petrol, diesel, hybrid or BEV of the same model, different AP if 2 or 4 wheel drive but not the gearbox.
