Glovis Crystal, supposedly arriving at Tilbury yesterday, decided to anchor in the Thames estuary for a day then went on a strange journey north towards Clacton this morning, before doing a 180 and is now heading back into the Thames. My guess is that the vehicle lots in Tilbury are full and the ship wouldn’t have been able to offload.
This ties in with Tillyman’s comment about a lot of ships arriving recently from Hyundai. Hopefully the crew at the port are working flat out to process the cars fast and get them out to dealers.
July 2, 2022 at 8:50 am in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189759Heard back from the dealer. The bad news is my car wasn’t in Tilbury. The good news is that he emailed me the itinerary from his screen that is provided by Hyundai, and it shows that the car was due to arrive in Tilbury yesterday. No ships were due in yesterday, so I’m pretty confident that it’s on the Glovis Crystal that’s due in later today (well done on noticing that ship @Tillyman !).
The Hyundai itinerary shows that if the car arrived yesterday it should be at the dealers for 26/7, so hopefully looking at no worse than the end of July to get it to us even with the ship delay. Ideally we will be able to pick it up on the 29th or 30th after our holiday and before another road trip we’re planning, but we’ll see.
I’ll leave the dealer alone for a couple of weeks now lol.
July 1, 2022 at 10:48 am in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189683Congrats @Tillyman that’s great news! My dealer still hasn’t got back to me, which doesn’t really surprise me. Last time I spoke to him at the start of June he said he had 200 orders on the go and was completely frazzled, so it looks like not much has changed in that respect. I’ll give him til lunchtime then chase him. Incidentally, 18th July is a quick turnaround for you, that’s impressive given everything I’ve heard.
Re the mats, our dealer actually ordered us a set of mats with the car. I’ve no idea what they are like, and they are only charging us £25 for them. Probably dealer branded ones? They’ll do for a start anyway.
@Sigma sorry to hear your disappointing news, it must be really frustrating. Note though that Hyundai also use the Glovis line (it’s fully owned and operated by Hyundai) so it’s more likely that it will be coming over on one of their vessels.June 30, 2022 at 11:00 am in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189559@Tillyman @fwippers
Yes, cars are definitely damaged en route! It’s only rare it happens though despite them being packed in so tightly, as they are lashed so tightly to the deck. Any scratches and dents suffered are fixed at the receiving port, assuming they are minor.
Glovis Comet is now out of Tilbury and on its way to Belgium, so I called this morning for an update. Needless to say, the motability guy was busy with a customer so I’m awaiting a call back. Fingers crossed.
June 29, 2022 at 6:12 pm in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189499I didn’t bother contacting the dealer today to see if he had word of it, the ship was still berthed at Tilbury when I last checked so it might not even be off yet. I’d probably just panic if he said no anyway lol.
On a side note, I read some interesting articles yesterday about the unloading process. They have a team of people called Stevedores, and they get bussed onto the ship to drive the cars off, then get picked up and took back to the ship to repeat the process. Newark harbour in the US is one of the biggest with 140 Stevedores for every ship, but they still only manage 450 cars an hour max. Considering they can be offloading thousands at a time, it can be a long process.
I also found out that these huge ships are manned by a crew of just 22. The crew take nothing to do with loading and unloading though, that is all on the port authorities.
My mind is absolutely fried with vehicle carrier info lol.

You can see it on the sea view cam on the Broadstairs (2nd) link right now lol!
June 27, 2022 at 6:07 pm in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189318The itinerary for Glovis Comet only shows stops in the Med. I’m guessing it came through Suez as it stopped in Alexandria in early June, then made its way to 3 different ports in Turkey (Derince being its main stop) before heading for Sete.
Derince is a regular stop for Glovis but none of the others are. Not sure what to make of that to be honest, the only thing that is giving me hope that this is our ship, is that it’s the only ship due in at Tilbury in the next week that we know Hyundai use.
Hopefully we’ll get confirmation on Wednesday from our dealers, they are apparently notified almost immediately by the Customs agent.
June 24, 2022 at 8:10 pm in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189156the charging infrastructure is great up here and if you use the chargeplace Scotland app that will cover most spots for you, in Stirling their points are a locations are free.
I have my CPS RFID card at the ready! Where we live in Coatbridge, there is still a whole rake of free chargers available. ~14 fast and 6 rapid all within a 10 minute walk of our house.
We can’t get a wall charger as we only have on-street parking, so the CPS network will be our main source for charging. I know it won’t stay free forever but hopefully we get some use of the freebies for a while yet ?
June 24, 2022 at 9:09 am in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189073Yeah 2 weeks in port and then apparently a week to transport to the dealer and for him to prep it for collection.
We go on holiday on July 22nd, just driving round Scotland, so it’d be great if we could have it for then to give it a good run, and test the charging infrastructure up here.
June 23, 2022 at 9:24 pm in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189060If you look at the position of the Morning Concert, 4 days to get to Marseille involves travelling the length of the Med. then around Spain and Portugal and through the Bay of Biscay. Marseille to Tilbury should be possible in less than 2 days, a short hop! I´m not an expert . .
Surprisingly, it’s a shorter distance from Port Said at the mouth of the Suez to Marseille, than it is from Sete to Tilbury. 2015nm to 2288nm according to an online shipping calculator.
June 23, 2022 at 7:20 pm in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189051Excellent information.
?
Tilbury only shows arrivals for the next 6 days, but since the 28th is within that 6 days I checked on the off chance and noticed the Glovis name. Turns out that Glovis isn’t just a shipping company that Hyundai use, it is their own shipping company lol.
I’m pretty sure this is the right one.
Could be making a stop for any number of reasons really; you shouldn’t read too much into it. Can be food/crew/fuel/technical/whatever. Could even just be a marked transit point. Most likely it knows there’s a few days unloading backlog at Tilbury and it’s cheaper to wait in Marseille. Assuming a 17kn avg speed, it’s around 5 days I think from Marseille to Tilbury, so looks a day or two late.
There’s a more likely candidate now, the Glovis Comet. Due into Tilbury on June 29th.
June 23, 2022 at 5:42 pm in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189038New target for those who are interested…
Glovis Comet, currently leaving a port on the S of France and due to arrive in Tilbury in the early hours of 29th June. My dealer had actually given me a date of 28th, whilst you have all been told the 30th apparently. Split the difference 🙂
I remember reading previously that a lot of the Hyundai deliveries are done by Glovis ships, so it might just be the one we are all waiting for.
June 23, 2022 at 5:42 pm in reply to: The kona electric delivery time thread and general Kona EV discussion #189037Unfortunately, it looks like the Morning Chant info has been wrong. The ship has now exited the Suez Canal and has set its destination for Fos-sur-Mer, near Marseille on the south coast of France. Due to arrive there on 27th June so I doubt it could get here for the 30th.
Anyone know if these ships would do multi-drops at different European ports? I assumed it would take a full load to a single destination….maybe not?
Oh well, back to the drawing board!
