There great for disabled folk so as long as able folk like them this can only be good news for the disabled.

Example, I love my VW Golf and perfect in nearly every way except it’s not quite long or high enough to fit in with my disability, I know I’ve stuck with it through 9 years x 3 cars but the arrival of SUV and everyone wanting one has in turn brought these cars down to an affordable price so much so that I can now afford a VW Touran, not quite a SUV, in fact closer to being a Tour Van, but along the same lines and most of all, affordable.

The gap between the Golf and the Touran price wise and in my particular trim is about £7,000 but had it not been for the popularity of SUV’s I think that gap would be a lot more.

I personally don’t like the SUV look but for me there practical but hope by the time I order my next car sometime in the next decade they will have brought a mid size SUV into the market that can carry 5 souls and get some gear in the boot. Just a few more inches would do it for me.

That’s my view as a disabled person but can’t help thinking the underlying view of able folk is these cars are rugged, but there not, have full 4 wheel drive but they haven’t, but look the part on the M6.

Maybe I’m wrong on that thinking and folk just think there driving a jacked up Golf, Focus or Astra and there was the adage of being up higher looking over the top of cars in front so giving that extra safety aspect but now were all up there that advantage has gone.

      Just a personal view.

Good question Matt and a hard one to answer but It’s hard to tell if you pay the VAT on a car you’ve bought from Motability as when they sell the car to you they give you a take it or leave it lump sum price with no breakdown of the price.

Going by what they asked for not being ton’s short of the price you would pay for a similar second-hand car in same trim and condition privately I would say you do pay the VAT within the offered price but even having bought a Motability car I don’t really know for sure as your receipt for the car is your bank statement more or less, other than V5c, though that said I do have paperwork from Motability that I haven’t read each and every line as my mind was on other more important things in the time leading up to taking the DWP to an appeals court.

As I knew, but no way 100% certain, I would be returning to Motability and having another car with them I did not bother keeping the road fund tax relief on the car as in “disabled class” and changed it to “private“as the tax is only £30 a year anyway and at that time I would only get 50% relief i.e. £15.

These days a lot of things within government offices are linked and I would of thought that DVLA would inform HMRC that the car had become private and VAT was due so I would say the VAT is included in the sale unless they’re very slow and I get a bill tomorrow. (:>()

I remember going back a few decades guys at work would buy ex-company vans for personal use and I’m sure they had to pay the VAT or duty of the van’s because the company was exempted but not ever buying one myself I can’t even be sure that that’s 100% correct.

The other thing is that I can’t recall there being any restrictions on selling the car on.

So summing up I would say yes VAT included but not 100% sure so a very helpful post. LoL

I have recently rejoined Motability and it was a month to the day before the Motability checker showed my application had been accepted but that said I can’t remember it taking that long when I first joined in 2008 and the second and third car was only a matter of days before clearing stage 3 “Accepted”.

When my current subscription got to stage two (Eligibility) it was ticked as passed but turned out two  weeks later after calling them about my concerns that nothing was moving, it had not been passed and they said my claim was being blocked by the DWP and that turned out to be a fantasy.

Maybe their staff is being hampered by MP’s looking over their shoulders at everything they do. LoL

My imagination has in its mind eye all the car workers all over the World just sat about all day twiddling their thumbs and playing cards and in a few months time they will all be paid overtime to get back orders out.

That’s correct Gary, just one tax allowance and when I bought my Motability car I only had 10 points PIP so only a 50% reduction on the road tax but having read a few nightmares about DVLA miss-placing paperwork while making the change from 100% to 50% disabled class in the log book so I decided to change the tax class back to “Private” because the road fund tax is only £30 a year anyway on my car.

Got my 12 PIP points back now after appeal courts and free to have Motability tax my next car as disabled class.

The only downside to changing my car to private class apart from costing me a whopping big £15 a year is that a lot of councils, Bournemouth and Poole for example check your registration for disabled class when parking in council car parks so when I was in that area in February I had to pay in the off street car parks even displaying the Blue Badge.

I’m counting the seconds to collecting my Touran…

Might be better to count in months if their putting the Touran’s back to New Year arrivals. LoL

Hello Jellybeanqueen, welcome to the form.

Yes you can buy the car you have from Motability at the end of your lease, it’s what I had to do for my piece of mind after failing the change from DLA to PIP but that’s another story.

Motability insist on cash on the nail if you’re buying the car so bank loans are a way to go.

As to whether your Motability car is worth buying at the price they offer you is another matter as some say the price is good and others say no and there is no negotiations with Motability on prices but with myself I felt the price was not a lot different from going to a franchise dealer and buying but you have the knowledge of the cars full history and how it’s been treated. There is no guarantee or after care once you bought the car as it belongs to you.

My car has adaption’s so that has to be taken into account as well because if you bought a car outside of Motability you would have to pay for any adaption and there fitting too but of course such adaption would already be fitted to said car if buy from Motability.

At the end of your lease you could of course just buy the car on behalf of a family member for example and just order another car for yourself on Motability, again if you think the price is right.

Buying your car would also mean having to deal with all the things that go with owning a car like insurance, MOT’s, services, licence fund (road tax)* and not forgetting breakdown insurance as that’s an important thing when your disabled.

*you should be able to get the road fund tax for free so don’t worry about that part.

Must admit I’ve been puzzled by the ads pushing sales when you can’t even get what their advertising.

Another thing with the ads that get my goat and that’s the little banner they hide in the corner saying “model shown may not be UK spec” or words to that effect so they could show a Rolls Royce but actually be advertising a wheel barrow.

I’ve always got that set of mind when giving a deposit about a dealer going bust, what with all these massive high streets stores closing down overnight with the like of ToyRUs , Maplins etc so with that in mind I paid a deposit of £500 for the extra’s added to my next car with a credit card so plenty of assurances built in and also remember there not allowed to put a percentage on the final price neither like holiday firms were always keen on the 2% surcharges back in the day.

This time last year I was a week away from signing up a Ford Kuga Titanium but was a bit weary of the 1.5 Ford diesel that the car had but as it happens I had to postponed it and ideally at the time I preferred having a VW Touran but the AP was leaning on the side of being a bit too expensive for me.

9 months go by and I’m now able to order a car again and now having near on a year to think everything through in what I really need down to how the car will fit on my short drive and how the scooter will lay in the car and having all this time sitting with tape measure in hand and thinking about the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson, Golf SV and of course the car I really wanted, the VW Touran I came to the conclusion I would go for the Touran even if I had to cut down on other things to get it.

So at least having a short list and loads of time to think about what you really need does have its plus sides and if it wasn’t for my compulsory postponement I would be driving around in a Kuga now but wishing I had a Touran and all that extra space I require.

A big bonus for me was the AP on this quarter for the SEL Touran is lower than that of the Kuga so having a long waiting time can be good but of course the end of the day it’s the prices in the quarter you’ve got to order in that matters and no one can predict that, but for me it’s worked in my favour this time around.

A bit off topic but I like your bit john about the post that adorned disabled parking spaces as this is one of my bug-bears too and requires the back of the car to be out in the road away from the pavements to unload scooters and wheelchairs and where only last year some dick reversed out of a normal parking bay opposite me and nearly crushed me and if it wasn’t for my carer wife banging on the side of his car I would have been a goner or at least a lot more disabled than I already am as I could see the car coming but with my disability was unable to jump out of the way.

These posts I assume are some sort of anti-ram-raid device and are a pain but then again just last year (must of been an near miss year for me) a brand new car in one of these posted spaces (not disabled space) went to reverse out of the space but being a new car they must have selected first gear by mistake and the car jumped forward just as my daughter and grandson was walking by and had it not been for that post they would have truly been injured in a big way as the post was left at 45 degrees and the brand new car was left with a nasty big dent in it.

So that’s my view and just don’t see an answer for the problem because I’ve been effected by both sides of that story.

Sent my complaint into the Advertising Standards Authority last week about Smart Energy GB ad campaign running on TV and it saying the meters save you enough energy to power your mobility scooter for 1,120 miles a year.

They replied saying they’re not going to take up my personal complaint because they have already had thousands of complaint about the ads so they are investigating as a group complaint and will publish their finding later.

                                Hi Newfie

I can’t remember filling in a form of that like and nothing like that in the paperwork I signed at the dealer that I have a copy of here.

They just had that photo copy of my licence so this looks like where my hick-up lays.

Yet another thought has come to mind and that is when I decided to rejoin Motability after leaving in January this year I owed them 5 weeks back payment and to cut a long story short when I paid it off I asked them when I sign up for another car do I use my old Motability customer number and they told me yes I do however, when I did order the new car the dealer said I have to sign up as a new costumer and I assume that broke any data permissions that I gave to Motability in the past.

                                Just a thought.

Scratch my thread here, just had a look at the Motability “check your order” page and noticed it’s changed to saying “order with your dealer” so looks like something is moving.

Something else I noticed is where you have 3 checks on the checker with number 1 being “Received”, number 2 being “Eligibility” and last but not least number 3 “Accepted”, my order was accepted according to the checker a week after ordering the car but it was a tick that was on a white background but now it’s a tick with a blue background.

Had one in my Seat Leon awhile ago but never used it but I was told back then that Kwik-Fit should give you another one when you go in for the repair free of charge.

Found this on the Motability site…

In some cars, an emergency inflation kit is supplied for use with punctures. Once the canister has been used, you should contact your managing dealer to get a replacement. If you are not comfortable using the kit, you may contact the RAC or Kwik Fit who will do this for you.

99% of my experiences with auto boxes have been with the VW DSG boxes but there mostly the same AFAIK and just to add to what lightbody has said is that auto boxes have a safety feature built-in where you have to put your foot on the footbrake before moving the gear selector, so the routine goes to drive off from Parking (P) to Drive (D) so foot on brake, move selector from P to D, drive to your designation, put foot on brake and move the selector from D to P and that’s it. If your car has a electronic handbrake and auto-hold and I believe it does driving the car is as simple accelerator to move and brake to slow or stop without any need to worry about hill starts.

Although the auto box has a neutral gear (N) with the introduction of Stop/Start I don’t bother using it anymore so for me it’s just P, D and R.

I wouldn’t worry about Sport (S) mode to much as all it does is hold onto the lower gears for longer and giving the car that little bit more accelerator a bit like when using an under powered car where you use the low gears to higher revs to put a sprint on.

Another thing to mention is what is known as “Kick-down” though having been driving DSG’s for 11 years with reasonable capable engines I’ve only used a couple of times and that goes something like this, your overtaking another vehicle and let’s say your car is in a high gear when you realise you need a bit more power to the wheels to pass the vehicles safely so what you do is press the accelerator to the floor and this forces the gear box to drop down into a lower gear and in turn increasing the speed of the car.

One thing I would say is your going to love auto as my Brother-in-Law who has been driving since the early sixties discovered auto boxes a couple of months ago when a car he bought came with a auto box and he can’t believe no one has told him what a great experience it is driving this way.

Now there’s a thing, two weeks ago today I ordered a car through Motability and I was expecting the paperwork from Motability to land on the mat sometime last week but nothing arrived.

Roll on to today with it being two weeks since signing the order form I rang Motability and they said that the DWP have blocked my order and won’t let my order go through but I said to them how come the online order checker is showing the order has been approved , no answer.

So no choice I’ve had to ring the DWP and no one wants to ring them unless it’s a last resort but I have no choice.

After 10 minutes waiting in line some guy tells me if I got the letter from DWP as proof of Enhanced PIP then that’s all you need but he said he would put me through to a DWP department that deals directly with Motability. The next man says the same as the first guy in that if I have the award letter and they have a copy nothing more to be said but he put me on hold while he talked directly with Motability and after another few minutes comes back and tells they had a glitch Motability end and it was now fixed.

I ring back Motability and they said the problem had been fixed and the order was going through to the dealer within the next 10 minutes.

Two thing here, has the glitch only been discovered today but going on longer so I’ve been unlucky my order been in cold storage for two weeks and two, why send me on a wild Goose chase with the DWP.

                                          Hi ldc7080

This is what the debate is about, will they or won’t they, and in your scenario with your wheels being nicked I think Motability would just replace with standard wheel that the car would have come with had you not upgraded them.

Maybe they would replace like for like but I can’t help feeling they won’t and best you could hope for is they give you the money the standard wheels cost for you to offset against the more expensive wheels.

                                          Just my thinking.

This has got me thinking sideways with the insurance cover on any extra’s we add to the car and this has me wondering what happens if say we added heated seats or a top of the range satnav as an extra and then after a year or so they stop working, do we have any guarantee from the manufacture to fix the seats or satnav like they would do with any other standard part of the car.

I think that maybe we would have to pay for the repairs out of our pocket or just leave them as they are in a debunked way until the car goes back.

Luckily for us most of these sorts of thing are reliable these days so should last at least 3 years.

Just to add to what JS has said, when they ask for “total allowance” it means the whole of your enhanced rate and at the current rate is about £60 a week of the top of my head. There are a few small cars that have a lower weekly allowance so say if the total rate is £60 and a car is £57 then the different will be paid into your bank account every month on a 4 x weekly = £12.

There’s nothing else to pay other than the AP that JS mentioned above should you decide you want something like an upgraded car  but if you don’t then no AP is just that, you pay nothing.

Oh just slipped my mind but it’s important, you do pay for the fuel you use but everything else is included, including services, breakdown cover, tyres, etc.

Of course the CO2 is going up just like the so say experts were told would happen when we all started switching back to petrol from diesel because diesel produces less CO2 and after all it was Gordon Clown who introduced low taxes for diesel cars to lower the CO2 rate. That said there is some debate about the petrol v diesel co2 levels but I admit I’m no expert, just a shame the clowns whole rule us can’t admit they know nothing neither.

We need to stop all this figure pointing at different transport modes unless we really do want to see the country go bankrupt and while taxi’s are using bus lanes in the name of public transport even though they are cars that have been hired for one-way journeys they make almost half their journeys with just a driver on board I don’t think I’m worried about if I drive a diesel or petrol as it’s just another tax-cow the government can’t live without.

Yes, Motability probably better value than PCP as you get everything thrown in.

Good hunting today and if you’re going for a car that has an AP don’t forget to asked if there’s anything they can give on that.

                                                    Welcome James.

Don’t be blinded by those bright LED’s, bells and whistles when looking for a car, first and upmost is to make sure it is suitable for your disability or whoever the disabled person is.

Getting in and out of the car and what you can carry in it is the most important thing for most of us but once you know that then look for all the bells.

                                                    Good luck with your search.

P.S. I can’t test drive cars because they need adaption’s to do so legally even though Motability insist you test drive. Funny old World.

I thought the figure was 15,000 miles as I’ve always just missed that by two or three thousand.

That said after three years with a car and new tech always in the pipeline and things that make disabled life just that little bit easier and I say this with the VW Electronic Handbrake and Auto Hold in mind that made me want the new Golf back then when it became a standard fit. Up to that point I thought I was more than happy with the car I had.

Roll on to the present and I’m spending big time (for me) on my next car in extra’s so the longer I keep it the better, unless something comes up that I feel will makes thing better for me next car.

Don’t mind waiting 5 months for the car to arrive if it’s the perfect car and if it turns out to be after 3 years I’d be very interested in exactly what the mileage has to be to get a two year extension.
