XC40 seat problem

I picked up my new XC40 3 weeks ago.  After about 8 days the support bars in the seat base started sticking into my buttocks, legs, and in one case when exiting the car the bar went between my a##e cheeks and hurt my errrrm …….. hole.  The passenger seat is fine and so was the driver’s seat in an identical test drive vehicle, which had a few hundred miles on it, so the seats were well broken in.

They didn’t have a courtesy car available till today, then tried to put me in a manual, which I can’t drive.  They then found an automatic Toyota Yaris, which I struggled to safely get in or out of.  I raised the seat to it’s highest level, but when doing that my legs were touching the steering wheel and I was too close to the pedals and steering wheel.  Anyways, phoned Motability who were good as gold.  They are organising a suitable hire car for me, which will be delivered to my home later today, and arranged for a taxi to take me home.

10 minutes after arriving home, a Volvo technician phoned me from the dealership and said that there was nothing wrong with the seat.  I informed him of the passenger seat being fine and also the test drive vehicle, his repost was to say that test drive vehicles are different.  I said that if test drive vehicles were built to a different standard, then that is mis-selling.  He reckons that 3 different service people, two who Master Technicians said that there was nothing wrong with the seat.  He also said that if I used the seat extension then the frame bars would stick in me, which in my mind is not fit for purpose.  When I went to book the car in I talked to the sales person first, who agreed there was a problem and took me to the service desk to book the car in.

At the moment they said they will get a fourth person to look at it.  I suffered this long for the car to go in for repair work as it was the first available date for a loan car.  The seat fault makes the car painful for me to drive, and sometimes unbearable and I have had to cancel plans when my back, legs, sciatica is too painful to use the seat in that condition.

As an aside, considering the showroom and most of the outside was full of XC SUV models, I couldn’t fathom that they had none available.  I said that I would rebook when they had one available, but was told not to bother as they don’t keep any for that purpose.  All their courtesy vehicles bar the Yaris, were manual cars and were even lower than the Yaris.

I could really do without this and hope it can get sorted as it’s a brand new car, and the major selling point for me was the electric seats which allow me to change position easily if needed.

Test drive xars are no different to otter production built cars.

normally they are allocated to individuals at the dealership to yse as company cars (tax break if used for test drives). They normally have various optional extras added as they are their Company cars, but the will be sold on as used cars, so not try are not specially designed as test vehicles he was telling you porkies.

If you are unhappy, speak to Volvo U.K.

I have heard the latest Volvo XC40 seats are not to the standard of previous Volvo offerings

I’m sitting in my XC40 as I type and there is nothing wrong with the seat at all, no hard bit. Keep on at them n show them exactly where it is and the compare it to your car

OMG  what dealer is it , why do car delears do that you take the car in with a problem and they say it’s your imagination there’s nothing wrong , so why did I bring it in then. I was looking at the xc40 because iv got the xc60 and thought it might be as good ., but know I’m beginning to wonder . Iv take my xc60 with a few issues and I was told the same 3or 4 people have looked at it and there’s nothing wrong with it.

I took my xc60 in a few time with the drivers  heated seat it’s actual melted and marked the back of the seat ( the bit you back goes on ) it’s also marks my shirts at the back from the seat .  The concluding from the Volvo engineer you have spilled something on the seat it’s a 65 place and the problems still there but Volvo say it’s not .

is there any decent car dealers out there or are they all the same

It’s a great shame if it’s true that Volvo is cutting corners with the seats in the XC40, as Volvo has always been renowned for having the best designed seats of any motor manufacturer. As a general point though, seat quality can deteriorate within many marques as you drop down the range. The seats in the 2018 BMW X1 were dire and led us to dismiss the car without even driving it, yet I have had a number of 3 and 5 Series cars, as well as a 7 series and never had a problem with the seats. You could also tell in quite a few other areas in the X1 where corners had been cut compared to the higher series models. Whilst the Tiguan we have is dull in many respects, the seats are very comfortable and were put to the test during a 3,500 miles in 3 weeks touring holiday in 2019. As someone who has back and sciatica issues myself, that was a blessed relief!

Out of interest, what year is your wife’s X1 Elliot? I believe that they improved the seats for the 2019 model (we last looked at them early 2018)? Pleased to hear that you like the seats in the 320i as that’s top of my list for renewal (if my wife can get in and out of it OK). They look similar to those in the 5 Series which I know are excellent.
