Does anyone have winter tyres put on for the seasonal changes? If so what is Motability’s policy or stance on this? Thanks 🙂

Unless you live out in the wilds, modern tyres are so good that there’s absolutely no point in fitting them these days.
Current car: Mini Countryman EV in very shiny black!
Previous car: MG HS Exclusive in nice shiny black.

Phillip BeharallI use winter tyres on my Lexus NX 2021 ( not a Motability car) shorter stopping distance in cold weather with the advantage of extra grip in snow . Dunlop technical services told me fit at 12c , not as there advertising department says 7c
November 15, 2021 at 11:24 am #169114Can I fit winter tyres or snow chains?
If you live in a remote area or somewhere that regularly experiences extreme weather conditions you could consider having snow tyres, chains or socks fitted to your Motability Scheme car. However, you’ll be responsible for all costs such as the cost of the tyres, fitting and storage. You will need to contact our Customer Services team to discuss this before arranging fitting. Please ensure that the driving conditions are safe for you to make your return journey before setting out and ensure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the product. You’ll also need to arrange for your standard tyres to refitted once the weather improves.

GordonI live in the Cairngorms and so snow can be on the ground for months. Every year I and all the other locals put winter tyres on but it is totally at my expense but in this area it’s a necessity.

GordonYou are not wrong there. I made the mistake of not fitting them one year and it was so embarrassing as I couldn’t go anywhere until the roads were safe enough to get to Kwikfit. It really should be mandatory in places, I phoned motability about winter tyres and all they said was “don’t use the car until its safe to go out” . That means I could be stuck at home for nearly 6 months!

I don’t mind at all lol, was just confusing to open a thread, see the avatar and be like “wait.. is that the beginnings of alzheimers?” after not remembering ever reading the thread before.
All good either way, cheers to a fellow Fallout connoisseur 😉 😀

MR Mark WinterHi
Some years ago a friend gave me a lift to the shops, it was winter and the road was covered in ice and snow. I remarked how well his car was driving, passing several stranded cars on the way there and back. On return he pointed out the Michelin cross climate tyres he had on the car. The next time our car needed tyres I had Michelin cross climate Plus ones fitted all round.
I have a rule about going out when the roads are covered in ice or snow, I do not go out. But sometimes the journey is to important. It was over a year before the dreaded ice and snow came back.
Driving 100 miles to the airport in the middle of the night, with the A1 road north of Grantham closed due to snow drifts. It was one of those journeys I could not avoid. It was an interesting drive south, if slow at times, but we made our flight.
A week later leaving the airport car park was no fun. They had snow ploughed the car park and the was a snow/ice ridge behind the car. Parked front inwards, in a disabled bay and had a fence to our front. A car a few bays down was trying to reverse out but his front tyres could not grip the ice covered tarmac and push him back over the ridge. I was expecting the same for us, same height ridge and ice under the car. But the car just reversed over the ridge.
From driving on them now for several years, they offer more grip than summer tyres in summer and were quieter than the summer tyres they replaced.
The extra grip they give in winter does not turn a front wheel drive car into a 4×4. But could well make the difference between making it home or ending up in a ditch.

Not those on a Seat Ateca with 19″ wheels, those tyres are complete pants, no grip at all even in 1cm of snow. They were so bad last year I never went out if it snowed!.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
November 16, 2021 at 12:09 am #169166I always fit a full set of “All Season” tyres at my own expense regardless of it being my own car or from Motability, if you do then all the upkeep is your responsibility even punctures but you can do it.
At the moment I have just had a full set of Maxxis Premitra All Season AP3’s, should have cost around £580 fitted but my local fitting centre is an authorised stockist and did me a cracking deal, £400 all in.
The difference between these and the crappy eco summer tyres is night and day, been out in all weathers over the years and not been stuck once in the 10+ years I’ve been running them on several cars, I can’t afford to get stranded in bad weather same as most disabled folk I’d imagine.

Oh god don’t get me started. They’re great in the dry in terms of lateral grip (albeit loud road roar), but especially in low speed applications, there just needs to be a slight wet hill in front of you and the tyres beg for mercy. Even while trying to accelerate somewhat slowly.
For an interesting tidbit, winter tyres (or to be more clear, “tyres with winter properties”, clarified by a snowflake on all season tyres) are mandatory in germany. Driving summer tyres in winter, or all season tyres without that snowflake symbol (for example M+S tyres), leads to fine of 60 euros, or 80 euros if you “inconvenienced other drivers” by getting stuck and blocking the road. Your insurance also will not play ball if you drive on summer tyres in winter, and have an accident that could reasonably be prevented by winter tyres.
Now.. Germany does have more snowy regions than the UK of course. It’s just meant as a “did you know”.
