Tiquan R-Line test drive

Just had a couple of hour test drive in the new face lift Tiquan R-Line.  1.5TSi 7 speed DSG engine combination.

Nice car to drive once you get over the annoying throttle lag when pulling off. Up and running the engine gives you plenty of pull and the DSG is smooth and handles aggressive right peddle input.  I was surprised by how comfortable the ride was on 20″ tyres.  It felt a good sturdy platform even when giving it some beans on a winding country road, not too much body roll. Motorway driving was taken in its stride, quiet and smooth and it felt like a long journey wouldn’t leave you with aches and pains.

The interior was good and the dash was well set out. What was strange was buttons on the media screen but none for the climate control, using your finger to move the sliders which control the temperature, which I found almost impossible to use whilst driving. You can get the climate control up on the media screen, but do this before you start driving.  Seats were very comfortable and manual adjustment in lumber and all other movements.  Back seats were okay and leg room was good.

Boot is the only real let down, despite being a good size, 104cm wide between the wheel arches, and 170cm from the back of the front seats, there is a 20cm drop from the boot lip, and almost the same with the rear seats folded down.  If you want a level floor you’ll have to pay extra for it, £215, but you do get a spare wheel.  But my biggest struggle was that the R-Line does not come with an electric tailgate, my wife had to close it as I didn’t have the upper strength to pull it down from its full height.  The Elegance comes with electric tailgate and rear camera.

It won’t be for me, but I know a lot of you will be looking to choose one. My advice would to pick the Elegance as it has much more useful equipment than the extra plastic racy bits of the R-Line

Part of the reason I avoided the R-line.

I don’t get it Tim, do you mean it’s too bright at night? Surely that’s adjustable???

Sorry I should have been clearer. I mean the touch controls of the R-line put me off. Elegance had the physical buttons and works well, wish it was an option on the R-line wheel.

Dunno about paying 6.5k for ap and extra’s, unless one intends to buy it after 3 years only mb will benefit as it’s a car you lease. seems like the golf the addons list is huge where as before they was as standard on the r-line and was only a few extras available. Was one i looked at last jan but ap’s went up when i could order so decided against it.

What extras do you need Chris

Chris just remember you hand the car back and get nothing from it after, if you can afford it so be it but you said you had to save.

Options are nice but are the ones you’re adding needed or nice to have

that’s the thing, I want them not necessarily need them…

We would go for sunroof, upgraded stereo and sat nav, winter packs (heated seats at rear), keyless entry/start…

The Elegance would work out £1,500 cheaper but the front spoiler and the plasticky bits on the sides put me off.

First world problems I know but we can always dream and hope! See what happens by Dec 31st when we need to place the order by!

                                    1. Chris-Chester. I’m sure the Rline has keyless entry/start as standard?

IM collecting my Rline a week Thursday. I thought on ‘Standard kit’ it says Keyless entry and go.

The standard stereo in the Tiguan SEL I have is perfectly good enough and better than you get in most cars. Unless you want to have the volume up to 11 don’t waste your money.

I have 2 home cinema systems at home with one costing £15k+ so appreciate good quality audio. I am assuming that the one in the updated models(Elegance) are at least as good as the ones in the SEL.

Pan roof is nice but only used mine open 2-3 times a year.

The R-Line I drove had keyless entry and go, definitely standard equipment.

On the online configurator it says:

Easy open & close pack with SAFELOCK £320

I think that’s for the tailgate. R-line has standard keyless included.

Button and foot sensor underneath if it’s the same as the elegance setup. Unless they’re separating them into two paid options.

Markymate, did your wife find closing the boot manually a easy task? Not some big lump of metal to close to speak!

And I believe the Rline doesn’t have a button in the cab to pop the boot open, does it open fully with the fob or do you basically have to touch the button on the boot to open it?
                                                      <p style=”text-align: center;”>For the tdi 150 4motion it costs £37,370.</p>
For that kind of money they could atleast put a extra button or two in there ?

Hello Chris. She did have a little difficulty but as she’s only 5′ 5″ I’m not surprised. She said she needed to give it a bit of a tug at first, but once it was moving it was okay.

No, there is no button on the drivers door and no activation from the key fob.  I must be honest I was quite surprised by this and other missing features on the R-Line compared with the Elegance. The two model’s will drive exactly the same, but one will have practical features and the other one will have fancy plastic cosmetic’s.

The Elegance would be the one I’d go for if the vehicle was suitable for me.
